After cat season we worked on a few projects, I think the most interesting project is Brian's updates to his 85 Toyota HiLux which should now probably be called a HiRunner. He swapped the HiLux cab body for a 4-Runner Body which he shortened 28 inches so that he can still have a flatbed. It's not perfect but it's a hunting rig, and a very functional hunting rig that will go about anywhere any highway licensable hunting rig could go. It has lockers front and back, 4 inch body lift, engine with several modifications to increase horsepower, and 37 inch tires. He took me for test run in it, we drove places I would never have tried to drive in the past. Right over the top of a tall snow pile from plowing the driveway all winter, through a snowy field that no ordinary vehicle would negotiate, and we took it on the highway where it also handled well, the project was a success.
-
Four door 4Runner cab on the 85 frame with flatbed and dog box in place. I almost forgot to mention, we ordered a double transfer case Brian is getting ready to install that is going to allow that rig to really crawl when needed.
-
It was too hard to get into so he added running boards. I was at first concerned they might hang up, but when he took me on the test drive it has so much clearance and those tires provided so much flotation in the snow (even when climbing over the snow piles) I don’t see how the running boards will ever be a problem.

We started the spring season with the youth turkey hunt. We had 5 kids the first weekend, two were contest winners, they got several birds and had a great time so it was a successful hunt in many ways, it's especially fun to listen to the kids tell their hunting stories each day.
-
We’ve been watching the birds closely and trying to determine exactly how well they came through the winter. At one of the ranches we hunt there were about 250 birds earlier in the winter, this spring there are about 125 birds there. We’ve noticed about the same percentages on most of the properties we hunt, I’m pretty confident that in much of our area we had about a 50% winter loss. Last fall we had the most birds I’ve seen in several years so even though we lost some birds (probably during that week or two below zero) we still have a lot of birds to hunt, it’s still going to be much better hunting than some years after hard winters that took an even larger toll on the birds.
-
I'm sure Kevin would've been delighted at the event, Dale. You're great to memorialize him that way.
-
Hey dale that hunting rig looks like it will do great for you guys
-
That’s good that the turkey population is as high as it is RJ and I are going to have to come back and chase some of them again soon with you guys👍
-
That rig looks like every hound hunters dream truck! Cool build.
-
When I look at that hunting rig I see Gene Hackman's face "It IS ALIVE!!" :chuckle: :chuckle:

Our first hunt went well, 5 hunters got 9 birds, one hunter had to leave early and only got one bird on the opening day.
Here’s Jake with his first bird ever, also our first bird of the general season, congrats to Jake! Also Pat got his first bird ever, great job Pat!

-
Season has been pretty good to Bearpaw Outfitters and our hunters so far.
-
Peter from Indiana got a nice tom the first morning, it was an awesome hunt, one hen flew down right over the top of us, amazing how that sounds, the tom landed up the hill and slowly worked in, Péter dropped him at about 12-15 yards. Later in the afternoon Péter scored on a 6” bearded hen, it was a great hunt.
-
More birds
-
Chris and Jim from Tennessee both got the Merriam’s needed for their slams, they had an exciting hunt, jim had taken a Merriam’s in the past but wanted a whiter bird, mission accomplished.
-
Awesome looking birds. You're having a great spring seasons!!
-
Bummer just missed nice tom at 40 yards, sitting tigh, live decoys all around us, so maybe we are still in the game for a different tom.
-
We worked this bird for a long while and finally Sam from Mississippi dropped his first birthday bird this morning, happy birthday Sam!
-
Nathan from Oregon also nailed a dandy Merriam’s tom this morning that is going to make an outstanding strutting mount, well done Nathan, you’ll have a lifetime of memories with that mount!

We started spring bear hunting on Monday, it has been a real challenge getting baits out this year, every single mountain road has been closed by downed trees. We’ve been cutting out roads for two weeks and we have another two weeks of cutting to get to other bait sites. The revised Toyota has been nice, three guys can go in one truck, it’s the only rig we have that can get through the deep snow to get baits started.
Because we were late getting baits started I was really worried if we would have bear to hunt on this first hunt. A few days before the hunt all we had was a couple yearlings and one was probably only 60 pounds soaking wet.
We have been picking up new bear each day, yesterday on the second day both hunters nailed bear in the afternoon about 5 minutes apart.
The first bear was shot by Luke from Colorado, he tipped the bear over but it took off downhill with no blood trail to follow. This was on southern exposure so there was no tracking snow either.
Brian took up Chewy the Jack Russell, he is about 5 pounds of fury with a great tracking nose. Chewy tracked the bear a couple miles through thick reprod zig zagging from the top of the mountain nearly to the main stream in the bottom with Brian following. The bear finally bayed up tight in one spot and another guide with Luke came in from a much closer road and finished off the bear.
Chewy was the hero of the day, without a good tracking dog this bear would not have been found. We have hounds too, but we have found that a single blood tracking dog works out best in these situations.
Luke with his bear:
-
Trail cam photo of the bear, yes, a pretty lean bear, it's been a fairly long winter in the high country.
-
Gentry from Louisiana scored on two birds, here he is with his 2nd Washington bird
-
Sean from Washington nailed the other Idaho spring bear we got yesterday, Sean anchored this blackie on the spot.
-
In spite of lower turkey numbers in most of the areas we hunt, we’ve been having a great season. We have noticed an uptick in turkey numbers in one location, that just goes to show how variable populations can be, down in some areas but up in another area.
Phillip from Texas was hunting for two birds, he nailed his first bird the first day and got his second bird the second day, I love it when a plan comes together.
-
Another Tom down! Cleaning time!
-
Just got this photo, we are ready for the next turkey hunters.
-
We are ready for the next bear hunt too, Brian located a pretty decent bear he will be trying to get. The knife is 4 1/4 long.
Did I mention a lot of our area is still under quite a bit of snow! :chuckle:
-
Thanks for the frequent updates  I'll bet that knife has some history

It turned out we had two groups from Tennessee, the guys that you know you are here hunting now, it’s been the toughest hunt so far, real rainy, birds have been pretty quiet. First day Mark got a bird, yesterday Jeremy got a really nice 3 year old, but we only got one bird each day.
Photos of Mark and Jeremy!

The rain finally quit this morning and Joe from Tennessee with guide Daniel had a great hunt. Daniel called in a Tom from 588 yards and Joe put the hammer down, they found another gobble later in the morning and Daniel reeled that one in and Joe hammered number two. Well done boys!

I guess Zach and Jeremy were on another tom this morning but an eagle ruined their hunt. Joe got a couple birds so Tim is the only one who doesn't have at least one bird yet, we will try to fix that this afternoon, fingers crossed LOL. Mark told me he's going to stay in this afternoon so only Jeremy and Tim will be going hunting after dinner.

Meanwhile in the remote wilderness of Idaho:
Archie had a once-in-many-lifetimes experience, never before have we found a bear like this on top of the mountains in the wilderness of Idaho.
:chuckle:
-
Cold weather, snow, and chilly winds are making bear hunting predictably much tougher than normal.
No bear were seen Monday morning on the first day of the hunt this week, Grant and Archie found the "Teddie" bear Monday mid-day and took the photo for laughs. Monday evening Archie watched a bear bait but must have fallen asleep for a while, yesterday when Grant checked the trail cam there was a bear on the bait at the time Archie was at the bait that he didn't see, LOL!
So Archie sat at that bait again and this time it all worked out, we are assuming that the same bear came in, looks like it when you compare photos, and it's so cold we don't have many bear out yet. The bear are pretty skinny this spring, this bear skinned out at 5'-9", but as you can see it's very skinny.
Congrats Archie, skinny bear make good rugs too, and currently there are not enough bear running around to be very selective!!

Question is what do you charge for those bears?🤣

Rhett with his two minute Tom turkey! First morning of his hunt, only two minutes from the first gobble to gotcha! I love it when a plan comes together!

These "special" teddy hunts are rather costly but a bargain in today's world, please call for pricing! Where else can you get a free range teddy? :dunno:
A guy once told me, any item is worth what you can get for it!

Hey Dale that’s a beautiful color phase bear
Congrats to the hunter😂
-
Glad he got that skinny Bear before it had a chance to fatten up on Fawns and calves. Too bad all the bears in Washington are just going to have a free-for-all killing the young ungulates every spring now.
-
Some great updates!! I'm hearing it has been a really tough spring so far for the bear baiters in Idaho. I bet things really start picking up next week!! Good luck!

I've heard some areas don't have all the winter downfall, but it's terrible in our area, I've had a 3 or 4 man crew cutting roads for 3 weeks, costing me a fortune, and we are barely started. Forest circus drives as far as we've cut, turn around and leave, I don't think they even carry chainsaws or else they don't know how to use them? :bash:
It wouldn't surprise me if bear harvest is half the norm this spring.
-
I always look forward to this thread! Those great looking birds are giving me turkey envy and have me thinking I've got to get back up there again. Also, that blond bear would be a great money saving bear, not often you get a pre-taxidermied bear.

LOL, yeah that's definitely a money saver... :chuckle:
-
I actually thought "cool he got a blond bear!", it took me a minute to figure it out ha ha. I must not have had enough coffee today

Might have to go with you and hold the rifle. At least until ya take a minute longer to identify boo boo vs Ted. :chuckle:

Luke from Virginia nailed a dandy tom with Daniel.
-
Patrick from Alabama finished his one year slam, good job Patrick!
-
Nice!
-
Scott from Louisiana dropped this blackie on the 2nd day of his hunt, nice going Scott!
-
Jordan from Iowa hammered this beautiful color phase on his second day of hunting.
-
Kriss from Utah returned again this year and nailed another nice blackie. Good going Kriss!
-
Zack from Colorado drilled his first beer, a nice Idaho color phase on the last day of his hunt, that was cutting it close!
-
So I thought this was a good: Caption this photo?
-
Just two more steps ........ pleeeeeeeease
Stump or bear - wait ... what?

Really starting to put the bears down!
-
Really starting to put the bears down!
Yeah, bear activity really picked up about 10 days ago in our area. From what I hear they were getting bear quite a bit earlier further south. Our early hunters filled tags but were taking what they could get, we didn't have enough bear out and about to be very selective.
-
Some nice looking bears.
-
Brian from Washington with his midnight blackie taken on the first morning of his hunt.
-
Excellent, first morning! Dang nice black bear
-
We’ve been doing pretty well on our bear hunts, the hunters have mostly been shooting pretty well too. We’ve only had to use Chewy “the terrier” to blood trail 4 bear so far and he found them all.
This morning Brian caught a good one with the hounds, the big bear mostly walked and bayed, finally the dogs got him to climb and Max from Wyoming nailed his first bear, this 6’-4” color phase on the first morning of his hunt. Way to go Max!
-
One of the older bear taken this spring. It was just about dentist time!
-
Wow, an old warrior!
-
That had to hurt, was it in decent shape?
-

Yes, not the best hide but it will make a rug.
-
Bear season started very slow this year and we thought maybe we had lost some bear during the winter, but once things finally warmed up we had one of our best seasons ever. I think our average size was even a couple inches longer than in the past, some a few bear over 7 feet were taken, one last week went 7'-2", I'll get more photos rounded up as soon as I can.
-
Awesome!! Congrats on a great spring season!
