Title: suppressor on hunting rifle
Post by: steeleywhopper on April 21, 2022, 01:32:46 PM: My wife has a Savage Lady Hunter in .270 and I am kicking around the idea of getting a Suppressor for it, but I am not sure how that works. Do you need to have a new barrel that it threaded put on the gun? Do you cut the barrel down and have it threaded so it's not a mile long with the suppressor? Does a Suppressor nock down the noise and recoil enough to even make this worth doing to a hunting rifle?
Not sure where to start on this whole idea or is it even possible.

Post by: fly-by on April 21, 2022, 03:08:55 PM: Determine the barrel length you want after threading then measure the barrel outer diameter at that point. You need both a shoulder for the suppressor to index on and minimum wall thickness for safety.

.270 is kind of a "tweener" 1/2-28 threading does not leave a lot of wall thickness and you may need to cut the barrel too short with 5/8-24.

A direct thread suppressor that allows for 9/16-24 and a 18-20" barrel may satisfy both.

The barrel on those is only 20in long so I don't know that you'd want to cut it down much shorter and they're a fairly small contour. I don't think there's enough muzzle diameter to leave enough shoulder for a suppressor, at least not enough for a direct thread can.

Post by: jrebel on April 21, 2022, 06:53:49 PM: It can be done and a good gun smith will make it happen. I had a 7mm-08 done in my sons savage. In order to get the suppressor we used a thread adapter and it worked fine. With that being said.....I hated having a suppressor on a hunting rifle. It made it long and front heavy which was counter productive. It also heated the barrel up super fast due to the blowback of the gasses....two shots and the third shot POI was way off. Yes it will cut down on sound and recoil.....but in my opinion, it is not worth it. I know a lot of guys feel differently.....and that is fine.....I wish I would have spend that $1000 on a new rifle or scope and not on a suppressor.

You don’t have to get a heavy silencer and make your rifle feel front heavy. You can get them made of titanium and keep the weight to with the 10oz range instead of other options around the 18oz range.
