Looking at the Tacoma pretty hard. Need a smaller truck with decent gas mileage that I can take on longer road trips. Won’t ever pull much max around 3500/4k.
Will be a auto and 4x4
What model of Tacoma and what motor would be best to fit these needs?
-
Is this going to be a hunting vehicle? What's the most difficult terrain you expect to traverse? I've been liking mine except for two things. Apparently it's a magnet for bad drivers - I've been hit three times in parking lots. And the seats are quite uncomfortable for long rides. I'm doing a mod this weekend to fix that for about $43. I'll let you know how it goes.
I have the 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road Manual 4WD Double Cab Short Box with a 3.5L V6. It can haul up to 6,600 lbs and has enough juice to do so without a problem. Mileage is a real issue. The sticker said 18/22. It's more like 16/19, and that's if you keep it under 65 on the highway. The stock tires are street tires but I think they have kevlar linings. I got 10-ply all terain tires for about $1K. The 4-L options are amazing, especially crawl mode (watch a video on YouTube about this). Basic features are BSM, Lane maintenance, 120V AC outlet in the bed, collision avoidance. Storage is a little lacking - jockey box, small center armrest box, and a couple of utility storage under the seats in the back.
Overall, I'm pleased. However, knowing what I know now about mileage and comfort, available storage, if all were even, I'd get a Tundra again. At the time, I was going into Portland a lot and parking the Tundra was a PITA. Now, I don't go into Portland and it wouldn't be an issue.
-
You mean 35,000 to 40,000?
-

I believe he was talking about how much he'd be hauling.
-
That might be what he ends up paying :chuckle: My father in law and brother in law both have them. They seem to be great rigs...BIL put bigger tires on it and it looks really nice. Neither have had issues in the past 5+ years. If I was looking for a smaller truck I would probably go that direction.
-
The 3.5 is a turd! Terrible fuel mileage. I would look for a low mileage 4.0.
-
Look at the new Frontier and the Ranger as well. I have an 09 4.0 Taco, original owner, just turned 200k mi. Been a fantastic rig, besides my own abuse, its been low maintenance. I will echo the fuel economy, never close to what it was rated and it tanks when you tow anything. But still been a great rig for me.
-
The new rangers I have looked at a little they are getting bigger and might work ok as well.
Nothing crazy for terrain mostly just gravel roads and highway getting from hunting spot to hunting spot.
Yes indeed 3500/4K for towing weight.
Prices are up so probably be 40/45k price tag.
I have been worried about the 3.5 if it’s going to be a good one or not.
-
Many 1/2 ton pick ups get as good or better mileage with WAY WAY more comfort. I liked mine a lot but had to have more room and comfort. :twocents:

:yeah:
Look into a tundra.
-
I think there is about to be a fire sale on all used vehicles once the fed kicks interest rates into high gear. I'm thinking by next spring at the latest. Personally I'd look for a low mileage Gen 2 between 2007 and 2015. Should be able to pick one up for around $16k soon I hope (I'm looking for another myself).
-
I sat in a Tacoma when shopping 2.5 years ago. Seats had no adjustment for up/down. Very little head room. I sat in the back seat of all the options.. Comfort was a big thing for me when shopping :twocents:
-
I have a 2017 off-road 3.5 double cab 4x4 and I like it. As far as comfort if you are taller than 5’10” probably not going to like it. I put a thin seat cushion in mine and that made a big difference as far as comfort. We have driven it to Phoenix twice and on those trips I got over 21 mpg. But I don’t hurry as we are retired. Keep it under 70 mph. It does good in the hills hunting but I also have a 2003 tundra that I use more for hunting
-
I love the tundra and the serria's but the dang 50-80k price tags are getting nuts for a hunting rig. Hoping to be like 40k out the door.
-
I ordered my 2022 TRD off-road this last week 4 door long bed . Ya my 2011 has over 300,000 miles and the only thing other then tires and brakes that I’ve had to replace are both front hubs . As some people know my truck is ran hard especially September through March hunting and trapping and it’s been a bullet proof truck .
The 3.5 is a little unresponsive but a peddle commander fixes that and then some , and a old man emu lift and tires it’s going to be fun! You won’t find a better truck for running the hills
-
Go drive the new Frontier, Ranger, Canyon, etc ….
Before I bought my Frontier, I drove all the mid sized trucked. By far the Taco was the worst of the bunch.
And at close to $10 k more when comparably configured, it was not even on my short list.
And used, forget it, most overrated vehicle made. I am not saying they are bad trucks, just that everyone has caught and passed them, but Tacos are still I’ll way over priced.
-
but you get CRAWL CONTROL!!!!
:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
titan and ranger and canyon are on my list to check into as well.

One of my good buddies bought a new Ranger. It's less than a yr old and he's had it in the shop 3 or 4 times for various problems. I begged him to listen and not buy one. He said he was saving $ over the Tacoma. I bet a Tacoma wouldn't be in the shop that much. My dad has a 2020 Tacoma loves it, no issues yet. Last Tacoma I had was a 2010, great truck, sold it with 120k in 2014 for a Tundra. Didn't do a thing to it besides change the oil, rotate tires, and change air filters.
-
Bought my bride a new 2018 Offroad which she loves. I'm not much of a fan due to the garbage seats, poor visibility out the front, dog of a engine and a pain to get into (minimal headroom and I'm 5'8"). Overall I pulled the trigger over a Colorado because hands down there is a goofy Cult willing to pay stupid $$$ for these used. Hard pass if it was my personal daily driver.
-
The Nissan Frontier looks interesting. 310 hp, 281 lbs-ft torque. Tow weight over 6000lbs. One potential problem I see with the Frontier as well as the Ranger is that they are in the first year of a redesign. I always make it a rule to never buy the first couple years after a redesign, let the manufacturer work the bugs out.
I see that the Colorado is in its final year before a new body style is introduced for 23. I love my 2010 Colorado(1st gen)
Last Tacoma I drove was my brothers 08. Terrible blind spots. I didnt care for it
-
My 2016 Colorado has constant check engine lights on at 80k
I've replave the purge valve, gonna try the hose and gas cap next. Code is for a small vapor leak, and can be many things. It's annoying as heck, but not a big deal
its got great power, gets great mpg, very comfy, and 4x4 works great.
Downers is I can't chain the front, emissions issues, but I think its a pretty solid little truck.
I think if I had to do it again I'd go full size with canopy
-
Downers is I can't chain the front
Can't chain the front of a Taco either....

Mileage sucks. Might as well get a 2.7 f150 and enjoy the extra room

My 14 Tacoma was pretty worthless in the winter unless I had at least 3-4 sand tubes in the bed over the rear axle. Most pickups are pretty sucky in the winter, with regard to traction, if they don't have some weight in the bed. Diesel pickups are ultimate worthless POS in the winter if you don't have some weight in the bed and with those things the more weight the better.
With 3-4 sand tubes over the rear axle my Tacoma, in the winter months when it was slick out, was a completely different vehicle and so much better. The downside was the rear springs were so weak, with those sand tubes, the suspension in the rear was nearly bottomed out and would hit the bumpstops going over every little. Maybe the newer ones don't have that problem.

For the price you'd pay for a newer Tacoma you could buy multiple used trucks in the same weight class and tons of fuel and maintenance costs. I got a 06 F150 for under 6 grand. Everyone knows how to work on them and it's the same size as those new tacos just 15-17mph instead of 16-19. Heck you can get Dakotas and rangers for under $5k. Knowing the type of people who buy new cars you probably won't listen. Have fun with payments.

You know the OP?
The best woods rig I ever owned was a crew 1st gen taco off road, 3.4 with a manual. Canopy and that little rig was perfect. I Bought used for 7,500 with 98,000, everyone thought i was crazy at the time, but I always wanted one. 140,000 basically trouble free miles later and I sold that little truck for 7,500. Show me a dakota that will do that and you have my attention. I can appreciate going cheap on straight woods beaters. But if also crossing into the daily or at least multi use world, everyone has different needs. I sold the 1st gen for down payment, on a second gen 4door. Payments did suck, but trouble free mileage, enjoyable driving, and insane resale on a higher mileage vehicle that still ran well did not.

You definitely don’t know me. I have never bought a new truck in my life. I have didn’t years waiting for the right rig and right deal and bought used. I wouldn’t be asking for info on here if I was one of those people that had tons of money and just marched into a dealership and bought a rig on a whim.
I need a reliable rig that will last for the invest I’m going to make and I’m trying to get real world feedback and thoughts from guys that understand things that I don’t.
I am 6’1 and a big dude. That being said I run around in a Jeep Wrangler for all my local stuff and have no problems with the space in the cab.
This is a long range reliable rig with warranty. I may use as a street run around for one of my business as well.

Best small truck on the market by a long long long ways! They will go anywhere, rarely break down, hold there value , you can’t beat a yota if you want a smaller pick up truck.
Ive owned 3 brand new and still wish I had all of them.

Still amazes me how many patriots buy foreign vehicles. Doesnt matter where the cars are "assembled," the money still goes back over seas to the manufacture. Support USA all the way

Can you name one manufacturer that makes and assembles ALL of their parts/vehicles right here in the good ol' USA? To your point, I'm sure whatever vehicle your driving has monies going to our neighbors to the north and south or overseas. :twocents:

I assume you are a ford guy?
GM and Dodge both had to accept welfare to even remain a viable corporation.
And even ford required some “free” money to stay afloat.
Please enlighten us on what manufacturers are 100% US based with materials and labor?
I’ll wait…

My 21 TRD Pro was built in Texas and barged around and up to Seattle. I followed the whole process. I'd say that's pretty close to being American made. :dunno:

Mine too, built by UAW workers in San Antonio. Most of the parts for "American-made" autos are imported - chips, electronics, steel, glass, etc. There is very little obvious differences to auto manufacturing and labor between imported and domestic anymore. When you buy Toyota, you're supporting American auto workers, mechanics, dealership people, etc. It isn't like the 1920s where everything was manufactured here. It just isn't anymore.

You guys never read the owners manual? Most trucks including Toyota’s your not supposed to chain the fronts. Can you yes…

I’m on my 4th Tacoma, with just over 1 million miles driven. So I may be biased lol. What they are is reliable. Other than normal maintenance (oil and air filter, brakes, etc) all I’ve had to do is one failed fuel injector and one failed u joint at 250k on one which was replaced free by Toyota. Not one clutch replacement. The only one I didn’t get what I paid for was one I bought new, and I still got a tremendous trade in, just over 300k and nothing but oil and air filter changes. I’ve never been stranded by a Tacoma, even with the bad fuel injector I was able to limp home.
What they aren’t is good on gas mileage, particularly in low gear in the hills. You can literally watch your gas gauge go down. But they are awesome woods vehicles, handle well, and can turn around in a two track. They handle well in snow and ice if you weigh them down in the back. They don’t have much room for larger guys or for more than two people. But if you like reliability low maintenance and good resale value, they are the truck for you.

What model of Tacoma and what motor would be best to fit these needs?
Carpsniperg2, I should have quantified my first post. I am not anti-Tacoma. I do believe they are way overpriced, but that is up to the buyer.
All, I repeat all trucks have their idiosyncrasies and problems, and all brands have a lemon drop in the mix. Taco's are no different.
But if the Tacoma fits you and is what you like, then by all means you should go for it.
-
Get the biggest motor you can get no exceptions!! I had the 6 cylinder my brother still has an older 4 cyl. Huge difference in power & pulling. Not sure if this is important to you but you cannot put chains on the front! You can barely get your hand between the UC arm located at the top inside of the tire. I am not sure about older models though. One thing I heard about Toyotas is the seats are lower to the floor. You may want to check this out to see if that's an issue.
Here's a pic of my 2013 Taco. I sold it in 2017. Great rigs!! Congrats! on whatever you decide.
-
If a person never keeps a vehicle beyond 150,000 miles...why even enter into the debate reliability?
My a-hole brother changes his vehicles engine oil every 3000 miles so they will last forever...then he trades them in at 125,000 miles.
If you have the money...BUY FOR COMFORT first

Ive owned 2 yotas in the past and no thanks for a hunting rig. If its a day trips around the house thats great and maneuverability on narrow roads is a bonus. Other than that not even close to enough room for week long trips with 2 people and gear. Hell my full size short bed was barely enough at times. Like mentioned fuel economy sucks and I still dont get why they are so bad. My 9k lb long bed crew cab diesel gets 22mpg with double the room
-
I appreciate all the posts. It’s something new to me I have never done new before and want to make a good pick as I do plan on having it Avery long time and probably my sons first truck hand me down possibly to lol.
When I get time. I’m going to go run a bunch of different rigs. She what feels the best. I could still end up with a full size but I’m just not digging the price tag for what I’m looking for but comfort on longer trips may be a factor in over looking. Is it worth another 15/25k maybe.
-
It's kind of a double edge sword. What I liked about my midsize Tacoma was just that, it's midsize. Up in the woods where the roads don't always have the most room I really appreciated its smaller size. But, on the flipside its smaller midsize is exactly why I got rid of it and went back to a fullsize. If it'll mostly just be you and your gear then you may get along fine with one but when you start adding another person or persons and there gear the inside starts getting cramped up real fast.
When I bought mine I also had a 4dr super duty so a smaller truck was no big deal and I was covered both ways but then I sold my super duty and was down to only one truck it didn't take me long to realize I missed the extra room of a fullsize. Also, I couldn't imagine pulling 3500-4000lbs with my Tacoma and mine was the 4.0L that I also put a TRD supercharger on so it had wayyyy more power than any year factory stock Tacoma new or old. Would it pull that kind of weight, sure, but those Tacoma's barely weigh more than that and I wouldn't want to pull that kind of weight with one.
Prices of these new or even slightly used trucks is absolutely insane. With the shortage thing the way it is prices of 1-2 year old used trucks is higher than what people even paid for them so it's definitely a sellers market which really sucks for people trying to buy a new truck without having to sell a kidney.

Hey Pianoman, tell me more. I drive a 2017 Off-Road with a canopy and it's about the best hunting rig I can imagine, especially if you drive places that involve some 4x4/locking the diff. Great vehicle.
The power is fine, the gas mileage is...not. But that's not the point of a 3.5L V6. The point of that motor is the size and weight so that it fits in a small truck, and small vehicles are great for offroading.
The big issue, the million dollar issue, is the seats/riding position. I can only drive mine for an hour before my lower back hurts and this is AFTER the front seat jacker mod from Desert Does It.
I hate these seats. I hate them so much.

I'm starting with just the spacers for the back brackets to see if lifting the rear of the seat will take some pressure off the upper leg. My main problem is right leg pain just below the buttock and if I've been sitting in traffic coming home from Hillsboro, it's excruciating. If that doesn't work, I'll try the seat jacks on the front.

The wife I am heading out on the 7th of May for a road trip from Oklahoma, to Albuquerque, then up to Four Corners Monument, UT. Meet up with our Daughter and her family of 8 kids coming from Bonney Lake, Wa. From there we head up to Moab for a couple days exploring the Dinosaur Museum and the Aches. Then down to Capitol Reef, Ut for a few days. We start our way back from Capitol Reef, we go to Saragosa Springs CO. Then back down to Amarillo, TX, to see the Palo Duro Canyon.
Then back East to home in Oklahoma.
We will be in my 2016 Nissan Frontier. Coming from a 2007 Dakota, the Frontier is night and day better.
It does really well on road trips. Very comfortable. Gas mileage is only 18 MPG average normally though. Last year on a trip to Branson, MO, I averaged 19.5 mpg at 80 MPH most of the way.
The wife loves the heated seats, LOL.

Downers is I can't chain the front
Ya I have chained on all 4 on my 2008 for years curious who fed u that line
Can't chain the front of a Taco either....
Why’s that? I chain all four on mine all the time.
:yeah:
I've never had issues ever chaining mine on all fours. :dunno:
You guys never read the owners manual? Most trucks including Toyota’s your not supposed to chain the fronts. Can you yes…
With that logic don’t u put bigger tires , modify the air box , don’t put 87 octane in either the list goes on ,

Manual says 87 octane is fine... Point is there is precious little clearance to the UCAs in a stock set up. Now if you want to start a mods thread, I'm all in!

Truth hurts, doesn't it?
Listening to you fanboys is like watching CNN Libs lie to themselves about what they desperately want to believe.
The truth is a Tacoma is an overrated, 3 generations behind fanboy car that is primarily bought for styling.
3.5 Camry motor is lame for a truck...can you even get a six-speed auto in them yet? My 6sp manual was geared by a bunch of monkeys...Literally no way to back a trailer...I needed 4lo to reverse up any grade with no load in it and 'cruising' at 75mph was revving at 2500rpm. Ridiculous.
As mentioned by others in this thread, there is no rear spring capacity. Put a dog box in the bed and you're on the bed rails, which will melt with first contact with any de-icer. Just look at the recalls.
I hypermiled my 4.0 6sp manual and never got over 18mpg, and I know how to drive.
My 3.5 Ecoboost F150 has twice the power, three times the capability and with 130k miles, needed none of the upgrades to fix basic engineering shortcomings.
I wanted to like the GMC 2.8L Cummins but couldn't look past the cheap interior.
Ford Ranger would be my choice in that category however I'm not sold on the 2.3L.
Pm me for a more complete set of reasons why the Tacoma is the weakest car in that space.

Little bit harsh on the carrying capacity of these trucks - throw on some airbags in the back (cheap and easy upgrade) and they're very capable.

Replaced the clutch once
Had the rear frame welded in a couple of spots. My understanding is a lot of Tacoma's back east have had an issue with cracks in the frames from all the road treatments
U joints on the front
Plugs recently

Which one of you is Rachel Maddow and which one is Don Lemon?
Here's a more comprehensive list:
Seat fabric pilling at 80k
Weather strip on roof decided to fly off on freeway (Check TacomaWorld for that one...Happens all the time)
My rear leaf recall issue has been documented...Toyota corporate says 'Eff you' until forced to recall Tacomas for rear leafs)
Frame rust recall...It's just the frame, why the big deal?
Fuel door 'hinge' rusted off...Comically cheap design.
Alloy wheels corroded and flaked at 70k.
Rear glass in cab rattled loose on Colockum Road...I was afraid it was literally going to fall out...The frame on those cars is so wimpy, the suspension can't dampen the vibrations.
Don't put any weight on the tailgate, they bend...It's not a truck, you know.
Did they ever put disk brakes on the rear? Probably not if people keep buying them.
I towed a #3500 boat and would not want to tow anything heavier, especially if you have improved the suspension.
I'll think of more later...
-
I apologize to all the rest of you.......

Nice going, Dan-O.

I guess I’m the lucky one of all the Tacoma drivers out there ! I just ordered my new one and I’m getting a great trade in on my 2011 with 300,000+ hard miles on it and yep my tailgate and gas flap are still like they were when I bought it

Which one of you is Rachel Maddow and which one is Don Lemon? Maybe look in the mirror?
Here's a more comprehensive list:
Seat fabric pilling at 80k - Mines fine at 79K but I guess I'm in for it at 80K!
Weather strip on roof decided to fly off on freeway (Check TacomaWorld for that one...Happens all the time) - Mines still there thankfully, cause you know that may affect my horrible gas milage.
My rear leaf recall issue has been documented...Toyota corporate says 'Eff you' until forced to recall Tacomas for rear leafs) So exactly how recalls work, just like on other vehicles.
Frame rust recall...It's just the frame, why the big deal? Again not on mine but I do wash it occasionally, maybe thats a 80K thing too?
Fuel door 'hinge' rusted off...Comically cheap design. Could be right, but again mines fine, I'm not looking forward to 80K!
Alloy wheels corroded and flaked at 70k. Wash and waxing goes along way...Glad i'm over 70K
Rear glass in cab rattled loose on Colockum Road...I was afraid it was literally going to fall out...The frame on those cars is so wimpy, the suspension can't dampen the vibrations. The Clockum road rattles everything loose no matter whats on it...
Don't put any weight on the tailgate, they bend...It's not a truck, you know. Yes its not a 2500/3500, maybe date smaller women?
Did they ever put disk brakes on the rear? Probably not if people keep buying them. Maybe but they work, even towing a camper 3600#, hopefully they appear at 80K?
I towed a #3500 boat and would not want to tow anything heavier, especially if you have improved the suspension. Refer to last answer.

Sounds like you're the Mall Crawler that doesn't expect much from a vehicle.

Let me guess...Under 30, Foglights(or more) on in traffic, MONSTER ENERGY or GLOCK PERFECTION window decal, ballsack hanging from the hitch receiver, mustache, and either white Oakley Flak Jackets or mirrored Pit Vipers.
I'm sure I got at least a few of those right.

I deal in facts, not feelings.
-
Seems like feelings to me...since you have a tendency to ruin every Toyota thread with long winded issues you had with your taco (which you repeat in every thread) and then belittle anyone that disagrees with you. Even making judgement assumptions about who they are.
Maybe just step aside and let the thread continue without your input... because honestly your so emotionally charged no one takes you seriously.
-
I've put several thousand miles on the Colockum in my yotas and have never gained a new rattle or other issue from it. Guess you missed the strategic Colockum Rd. driving course that teaches you how to pick your lines over the rocks. :chuckle:

I'm on my 6th toyota and love them. when my gas flap came off in my hand the other day at 4 in the morning at the gas pump thinkingman popped into my head and I laughed a little :chuckle:

But aren't we talking about a Tacoma here? Bringing this up about the Tundra is like slandering the rest of Boeing's products because of the 737 MAX issue.
@Thinkingman, I understand you're disappointed in your Tacoma experience, but understand that the rest of the world doesn't expect a compact pickup to perform like a diesel 1 ton. It's a small truck, world-renowned for its reliability (in spite of your complaints based on a very narrow personal experience), and a tool that works very well for its intended job.
Choose the right tool for the job, and you'll likely be happy. Use the wrong tool, and you'll likely come across as a frothing-at-the-mouth scorned lover to the vast majority of those that have fair expectations for the tool they choose. You've long made it clear you're not a fan - there's really no need to dump on every Toyota thread that pops up simply because you mismatched your choice of tool to the job required. A vast number of folks have realistic expectations about what the truck can do. I know you've made it your "personal mission" to pay back Toyota for the perceived wrongs they've done you, but c'mon - do you actually think the way you're approaching this gains any traction with potential buyers at all? In any way, shape or form? At this point, you're probably driving people to the Toyota financing offices...
And for the record - I've never owned a Toyota of any kind, and don't plan to since they don't fit the jobs I would need them to do.
-

Hey, one thing is for sure, Toyota Karen is consistent!.

My son's toyota 4-cylinder had 388K miles on it before we sold it. We were starting to fix things at random. All easy fixes, he just wanted a newer vehicle, but was reliable for the amount of wear and tear it had on it. He sold it for more than he bought it for.

I have the 2015 TRD 4.0 auto which is the older body style. My opinions:
--A bit underpowered, but if I give it the juice when it hits second gear I can get up to 60 in no time. Does not seem slow if you put the high RPMs into second and third gear.
--Seat could be more comfortable but I can drive four hours without it bothering me.
--If you are tall could be an issue. I am 5'10" and I have comfortable headroom but maybe not for taller folks
--Just towed my buddy's boat this weekend, probably 3500 pounds and it did fine but did drink more gas obviously
--I think the mileage isn't that bad. If I drive 225 miles from my house to my place in the Methow there is just under a half tank when I get there (I am not a led foot)
--Just did a leveling kit and it turned out excellent. Has 31.6 tires not but will likely clear 33s now.
--Excellent snow rig, excellent offroading rig, it did some amazing things stock but I lifted it so no contact with the body etc.
--Just took it in for a tune up and they said the truck is in very good condition and I do not baby my rigs.
--The rear diff lock is worth it. Pulled myself out of some nasty ruts with it once. It works as stated in the manual.
--I have never had traction issues without weight in the bed. That is what four high is for IMO.
With all that said, I don't know how the newer models differ. I have heard many people say the older version is better but not sure that is true.

When Toyota Corporate refused my complete reimbursement document set with receipts for the leaf springs they told me were fine and I didn't need two years before they issued a recall for leaf springs that are, according to the experts here, fine.
They had the audacity to tell me they didn't care about my experience and they would continue to sell Toys to the Koolaid drinkers because that's who buys them.
I promised them I would tell anyone and everyone about their corporate arrogance and they said 'Go ahead'.
That's why.

You have. Imo the persistence here is borderline banworthy as it essentially begins to derail any thread with the word Toyota. I don't blame you for your stance, opinions, etc but the derailing of every Toyota thread really needs to be put to rest.

My Tacoma has taken a beating and keeps on going. Just drove it down to Texas from WA. 1800 miles without stopping besides to fill up for gas. Took me around 29 hours. The seats were great I was plenty comfortable. And I’ve had three back surgerys. I’m at 207k miles, I can’t believe it’s still driving with what I’ve put it through. Yes the rear springs are soft but I load my truck down with wall tent and wood and wood stove until it’s on the bump stops. Then keep loading. Then take it down washboard roads for 50 miles to camp, and it keeps going. 2007 Access cab 4x4. I’ve done some repairs, manual tranny went out at 200k. I have a feeling it has to do with the truck being lifted on big 33 inch tires it’s entire life and me rallying it. I would suggest keeping any truck stock. My next truck I’ll keep stock but it will probably be a tundra for a growing family

I’ve owned half a dozen over the years and used them for commuting/hunting rigs. I beat on them pretty hard. I sold everyone of them with anywhere between 230k-250k. Never had one issue with any of them. Just normal maintenance.

Understood.
I promise this is now a 'Toyota-safe' community.

My gas tank lid hinge did rust it’s holding on by a thread and I did have leaf replacements. Frame isn’t rusted it was checked. So there’s a few things that are correct that you complained about. But I think Tacomas are the ultimate woods truck

Loved mine
Just needed a bigger gas tank

Nope, go see Elon if you want free reign. There is no free speech here. There are rules regarding thread and or topic disruption. Thinkingman has made it known regarding his thoughts. The continued beating of said horse in thread after thread is a disruption. If he or others take issue Dale is available as are other mods.
That being said, this thread is done and we can put the topic to rest as I assume Carp got what he needed.
