Title: SD card Stealing Dirtbags!
Post by: hunter399 on May 05, 2022, 11:32:52 AM
Man I'm trying to avoid these SD card stealing basterds this year.
Messed up thing about last year is none of my SD cards got stolen until September when deer seasons started.
Had one stolen durring archery deer.
And one stolen durring muzzy deer.
Trying to avoid it this year.
I've bought about 80 dollars worth of those cable locks,
Plus made lock boxes for known SD thief spots

I know my welds suck,I'm not a welder by trade that's for sure.
Made two by cutting an ammo can in half.
Made one from scratch.

Man I'm hoping to avoid these guys this year.
But a few spots are spots I use every year.
I just can't give in to these SD card Stealing basterds.

And the black one is already been out in the woods for almost a month.
But the ammo can ones I just made.

Ya that's true  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
The ammo can the metal is so thin all I can do is spot weld it a million times.
Good thing I'm not towing these down the road.
Hahaha..... :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

These should deter them. Sucks that it has come to this. Unfortunately there are dirtbags everywhere.

Cables won't stop the dirtbags, you need those heavy steel boxes and multiple 9/16'' min lag bolts to a tree.  They suck to pack in but they have to cut the tree down to steal your crap, and hopefully it takes them so long you catch them in the process!!!

I could lag bolt them through the metal I welded on there .
It's like 3/8 I think.
The cables are for all the ones that don't have boxes.
I try to put them higher up with tree stand steps.
But it's a task getting me to climb a tree.
Most of my cams are just out of reach if your 6ft tall and reaching up. With a cable now.

You guys think its ok to drive lag bolts into trees that you don't own?

yup, I don’t leave them in the tree, and I’m in the wilderness, those trees aren’t being processed.

I stopped using lock/bear boxes, they don't deter, they're more work and heavy.  I've had 4 cut from the back with a battery Sawzall most likely, probably didn't even take the dirtbags 60 seconds.  I now put cams about 12 up in the trees, no problems period.  Not one person has even looked up at them when they walk by, only have had 1 bear make eye contact with one, and he let it be.

I have used the same tree for many years. You can't hardly tell I was there.

I had a cub climb up and mess with one

I accept that risk, totally different feeling than knowing a dirtbag has my stuff!  All though it could end in the same actual result of no cam/sd card, chit happens.....

For a starter there ,you screw lag bolts ,not really drive them.
Who says I don't own these trees.
Some things are better left unsaid here and on HW.

I've had three over the past five years I've been getting into trail cams.
Bear got them off the tree ,but always found them in the dirt.
Scratched up or whatever. But they always still work.
And the SD was still there.

I/we had two stolen last year on trail cams probably 3/4 mile apart.  they just popped out the sd card and left the camera.  Sad part is that there were some really cool video/pics.  Had one video of a really nice bull in a wallow ripping off a nice bugle.  Now will likely only use cable locks for my cameras.

Seems like there was a thread not too long ago about the owner of the cameras put infected SD cards in the cameras. Not a bad idea.

I’m pretty sure you can put a password on ur SD cards so that no one else can access the content. Won’t stop them from stealing them but at least they won’t get anything out of it.

I'll have to Google that thanks.
I didn't really want anybody seeing the big boys on my cam.

Hunter399 - what do you call that tool that is used for putting in screws? Is it a screw screwer or a screw driver? SMH

A cordless impact drill
Socket and rachet.
For lag bolts.
I guess you could call it a driver ,but I've never heard it called that.
Learn something new everyday .
I've never installed lag bolts with a screw driver ,I guess you could if your Hercules or something.

Camera installed.
Old camera box I just found, which fits one of the cams I have. So no rush to finish the other box.
Slap some spray paint on those good looking welds.
Find a earth friendly way to attach to tree and it's ready to go.
And wait for the road not to be so muddy.
Good day all!
Oh and I paid 5 bucks for ammo can at garage sale that has been sitting in the shop for over a year.

I would get some disc locks to make it harder for them to get the locks off.

Slap some spray paint on those good looking welds.

Only thing about those welds is that there is hardly any penetration... Probably pry them apart with a hefty screwdriver.  :o

Grind 'em back down and put some more heat in them thar welds!   :chuckle:

If you can afford it, always have a cam watching a cam for problem areas. Most thieves don't expect it. When people ask how many we put out I always tell them about the cams watching for thieves. No problems so far.

I think putting a camera in a lock box for anti theft is more likely going to lead to a destroyed camera. If someone can't take something they want they'll destroy it...or destroy it trying to take it.  :twocents:

I found one a couple of years ago that was ripped open around the lock. Camera was gone. Tree stand was still there. Looked to have been there a year or so. I went thru a couple weeks later and the stand was gone but broken lock box was still there.

That has got my brain thinking, that's for sure.
I wonder if I could use your design, but maybe use some cheap horseshoes from the old ranch store.

Thanks for posting
That's an idea for next year.
I gotta make these lockbox easy, instead of breathing in all this grinding dust and such.
