What’s your favorite bullet for hunting and what do you like about it?
No bullet bashing here. Just give us your favorite and why.
-
My favorite is the nosler partition. Has killed most of the animals I harvested. Doesn’t seem to matter where you hit them it puts them down no matter what. I have made some fairly marginal shots on elk and they die within 30 feet no matter what i’ve never lost an elk or a bear or a deer when I hit them with one.

Another Partition guy. IMHO the best all around bullet made
-
Berger. I’ve killed lots of animals with different bullets and they are the most devastating by far at all ranges
-
Hornady Superformace SST.
Deadly, accurate, lazer flat, and hit hard. I have dumped a few animals over 350 yards. My Browning X-Bolt shoots them extremely well.
-
Under 400 yards the Trophy Bonded Bearclaw has been a huge perfect mushroom even on point blank bone hits (338). Amazing. Beyond 400 need better ballistics so 300 Berger or SMK seems to work.
-
For 24 - 30 caliber rifles I prefer Nosler Partition is my first choice if I can get them to shoot…Nosler Accubond (regular not long range) is my second choice.
I have shot animals with Nosler LR Accubond, Regular Speer and Hot Core, Sierra Game King, Hornady Spire Point, Barnes LRX and Bergers. I prefer Nosler over all the rest.
-
I'm a Nosler Accubond guy. They've always performed great for me and my rifles like them.

No wonder I can't find Partitions when looking for them, everyone shoots them as well. I like that the forward half can mushroom creating a nice channel for blood flow while the back half is an encapsulated core for weight retention. Kind of get the best of both in one bullet.
-
Nosler Accubond (Regular) has never failed to perform. Have recovered a few and they are perfectly mushroomed.
-
Nosler. Accubonds. I don’t hand load and they’ve become the only factory load I’ll shoot out of a hunting rifle. Served me well to date
-
Switched to Partitions many moons ago after many Sierra gameking blow ups. Now playing with accubonds, eldx, and bergers. Shot placement is most important....
-
Berger. I’ve killed lots of animals with different bullets and they are the most devastating by far at all ranges
:yeah: it’s like a granade.
-
I got a bunch.
Nosler BT if your over 3000 fps. It turns into an accubond. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
Hot cor is another that has put meat on my table.
Right this second.
243 ,hornady eldx 103 grain is another I'm playing with.

Exactly you can't go wrong with this bullet. So good it ended up being not only my big game rifle but my go to coyote round this season. Big or small it killed them all. Lol
-
Berger for my personal rifles.
-
Nosler Accubond for me and my family. Have always preformed very well on everything from moose to antelope and prairie dogs
-
Hornady ELDX in my 28 nosler.
-
Dead is dead. I chose Sierra but do both Sierra and Berger now days but have been successful with so many other brands its probably not fair to choose any one as being better than another.
-
Used to be Berger VLDs, but my new rifle likes the Hornady PH ELDx better. Still have the other rifle, still shoot Bergers out of it. My older son uses it now. My younger son shoots a 6.5cm and it likes the Hornady ELDxs too.
...that being said, I got tricked into buying 2 boxes of super-stupid expensive Noslers during the Ammo Famine. Haven't tried them yet. I honestly hope they're not great... :chuckle:
-
Barnes TSX, shoot well enough, relatively available and reasonably priced and a very proven design that has worked well with everything I hit with it.

Those are "up next" for me. I suspect its only a matter of time before they are crammed down our throats by this screwball state so its in my near future plans. Im fine with it, just have to consider their limitations.
-
Yeah, not fancy but works for what I do. I originally went with it because I didn't want fragments of lead in the meat and haven't had a reason to look elsewhere. If I end up getting a longer range rifle I probably will, but for regular stuff it is effective.
-
I chose nosler because I think the accubond and partitions are super hard to beat. If we could have chosen multiple, I would have put hammers as my second choice....but only because I don't have the number of kills with hammers as I do with nosler bullets. The animals that have fallen to hammers have died very fast and the wounds were very impressive. More animals will fall to hammers this year, so we will see if my opinion changes and they become number one.

You wont like them. I can take them off your hands :)

+1

Probably 90% of my animals have died by partition or accubond. I trust both 100% and neither have ever let me down with proper placement.
I do run hornday eldx and dgx in some rifles.

Lehigh defense controlled chaos

It depends on the rifle cartridge, and game being hunted.
For faster velocity rifle cartridges, I prefer Nosler - both Accubond and Partition. As well as Hammer and the old North Forks (the company that bought them is producing them again, their US distributor is in LaGrande, OR). Some Nosler Ballistic Tips in some cartridges as well. Berger VLD in one of the cartridges just because that rifle really likes those bullets....and agree those Hunting VLDs are a grenade that drops the animal quick if put into the heart/lung area.
For slower velocity rifle cartridges, most products work as you don't need a premium bullet in the slower velocities range. I usually go Speer Hot Cor or Hawk bullets for those cartridges. Some Sierra too.
-
I’ve been using Barnes TTSXs since they came out. Accurate, great terminal performance, and more tolerant of being seated off the lands.
-
Nosler Partition!
-
Looks like that Nosler partition is a HW special.
It's crazy that something so good has been around so long .
It's pretty hard for the other companys to beat it I guess.

This is the 75th anniversary of the Nosler Partion!

ya pretty much a land slide. Did this same poll over at long range hunting and while Berger is #1 there nosler isn’t far behind (39% vs 29%)
I’ll admit I didn’t expect it to be so one sided. Figured it would all be close to even.
-
This was an interesting poll. I quit using Nosler years ago due to poor performance. On a guided hunt I was running 150 gr .308 and guide was running 130 gr .270 Ballistic Tips, after 6 shots not one expanded. Played with Speer and Hornady and ended up with Barns.
-
I've been shooting Noslers for many, many years. I've tried others, but always come back to Nosler bullets. I reload both Partitions and Fail Safe 180 grain bullets in '06, and 150 grain Partitions in .270.
I have recovered a number of bullets which have mushroomed perfectly, and retained maximum weight. One thing I do not want is a bullet that "grenades".
-
I picked Hornady because...well I'm shooting a PRC so it kinda fits.
But honestly it depends on the gun for me .. every gun I own likes something different.

I'm not a huge fan of the ballistic tip. I would shoot deer and yotes with them, but anything bigger gets the partition or accubond. My guess is everyone that picked nosler.....didn't pick them because of the ballistic tip.
Would be interesting to break it down a little further in another poll for nosler specific bullets. AB, ABLR, PT, BT.....my guess is the AB and BT would be almost 50/50.

Bullets need to be matched to velocity and game, and accuracy in the specific rifle. The nice thing about Partitions and Accubonds is they work at a variety of velocity ranges and are accurate in most rifles, and perform reliably on game of various sizes. I put Swift A-Frames in the same category as the Partition.
Various copper bullets (Barnes, Hammer, etc.) are also great, but do have slightly higher minimum velocity on impact thresholds that are higher than a Partition. Otherwise they're equally as reliable as a Partition.
After that you get into bullets of various constructions that need to be more closely matched to cartridge velocity, size of game, accuracy in rifle, type of shots (ie heart/lung vs. top of shoulder) etc. Like Berger, Speer, Sierra, Hornady, etc. The grenade bullets like a Berger work great in the right scenario and cartridge (I wouldn't want to shoot a Berger for a quartering shot on a Roosevelt elk, for example....whereas I wouldn't hesitate that shot with a Partition).
Partitions are so popular because you can just load it in a rifle and be fine shooting it out to 400 yards or have to shoot a charging black bear with it or shoot a quartering elk. The Partition performs in all those scenarios, so it's hard to vote against it. Or the A-Frame
-
it's a tie between Federal and Winchester if I'm not shooting reloads
-
Started reloading partitions way back & loved the performance. Switched to accubonds once they came on the market.
-
I’m a diehard Accubond guy. I’ve had nothing but excellent performance from them for about the last 10 years or so BUT the longest kill with them has only been 462yds. If I were routinely taking longer shots, I would definitely be using Berger, and I still might try them if my backorders ever get filled!!
-
Which bullet depends on the game and the rifle. Hornady 165 Interbonds is my current .30-06 deer load that works on caribou and will do if I decided to hunt black bears. For moose, elk, things way bigger than deer I like Swift A-frame in 180 grain.
In my 6mm and .243 I am currently shooting 95 grain Nosler Partitions for cougar, wolf, coyote, bobcat, lynx, etc. I mostly call with the .243 and like one bullet for anything that might come to the call. Planning to try some 80 grain GMX.

Ditto. Great post.
180 Swift A-frame has performed flawlessly for me on a small blacktail at 7 yards and on an elk at 425. Had similar experiences with Partitions: they work. At close or long range. All I have to do is hunt and know I can shoot close or far, with an animal at any body angle, using a bullet that is ready for whatever I encounter. Does not matter to me whether anyone else likes the bullet. We had a long range bullet blow up at 20 yards last week, probably higher velocity than the bullet impact speed was designed for. It killed but most people would not call it optimum terminal performance.
-
another vote for nolser accubonds- we shoot them out of a lot of different calibers/guns and they are accurate for all and performance has been very reliable. I started loading and shooting accubonds as soon as they came out. They have never given me a reason to change(except not being able to buy anymore :chuckle:)
-
I run swift scirocco in my 6.5-300 and Barnes ttsx in my 300wsm, both have performed awesome for me.
-
Nosler partitions…my 300win mag barrel loves 165 grains…they always do what theyre intended to do! Same bullet deer and elk
-
150, .277 ABLR frontal shot.
-
I have been a partition user since about 1979, making the switch to ABLR when available.

They’re available at shooters pro shop. 150gr partitions too.
