Well it's among us and with the recent crap weather the Halibut fishing in 3 and 4 hasn't been consistent. Hoping the quota gets pushed into late June and maybe July. Now I don't have to chose so I am focusing on the upcoming Hood Canal prawn season. It's such a fun fishery, low key, easy, and great opportunity to take friends who usually don't do any type of fishing.

so i guess I don't have status here because I can't post more than 2 pics LOL. Or are pics discouraged on this forum? Let me know I can delete them, thanks!
Pretty sure 2 pics per post is just a system limitation.
I've seen lot of folks post large groups of pics.... just 2 at a time.
Oh, and great pics!

I have never done this but have crabbed a ton. I'm in Stanwood and no idea on where to go localy. Anyone have any advice for me? My girls love prawn so it would be fun to get them out there as well. Thanks in advance.

Anyone know if the Tulalips will still be at the Everett ramp on Wednesday? If so, it's going to be a very ugly situation.
-
is the limit 80?

Rocky Point south to Camano Head in Saratoga Passage 230-280 if you can find it. Really short opener but it is close to Stanwood. Watch the current it does run pretty good through there, and the middle of the passage can get rough. Used to go to Mabana on the southern end and did ok, but that's when we had all day, and not a four hour opener. You will see where to set shrimp pots on the opener there will be plenty of boats out to show you. :)

I don't know how Puget Sound and North was but the Hood Canal was rocking some south winds 15MPH and rough water from 6:30 till we left at 12:30. IT was a zoo with pots hooked up and quite the show. We moved our gear out of the honey holes and did great! 3 limits with 5 pulls but it was tough with one guy not being able to leave the helm. Didn't see one game warden, not one airplane, and not one park worker at the state launch. Overall it was below average for the amount of people on the water for the opener.
-
Was a little lumpy on the canal. Backing down on gear was necessary and a concept some people apparently don't understand...saw some tangle issues between boats a little ways from us.
We avoided the crowds as always. No issues. 3 limit's in first two pots. Good size bugs to... Boat tied up and off the water by 11.

Nice job bud

Yes, it was a little sporty in the Sound too, particularly in a 15' whaler. I tried a new spot that is a little more protected. Took a little bit to get the location dialed in, but then starting cranking and filled our limits in short order. Hardly anyone where we were, it was nice not having to dodge other boats and pots.
-
I ended up in 7 and the weather was great. We found a nice little spot to ourselves and only had to deal with the current which seemed to be significantly different than DeepZoom's predictions.
We did manage to hook two different derelict pots, one we brought in and one stuck to the bottom harder than I wanted to pull. Even the one we got overheated my puller and let a bit of secret smoke out.

Getting ready for saturday! My buddy called me and knows a guy who got 389 in one pot. I have shrimped for over 32 years including a few weeks commercial in B.C on my brother in laws boat and have never seen that! :yike: That called setting down on the BIOMASS!!!

That's pretty good fishing for sure, probably better than 99.9% of the pots I've pulled on 24 hour soaks up here. I can count the number of 10# pots (tail weight only), I've had on my boat on one hand.
I believe the Puget Sound spot prawn fishery has to be one of the best there is. I saw a listing for a Puget Sound commercial spot prawn permit on one of the brokerage sites for $330k a while ago, and it didn't last very long at all. I heard a rumor from a guy that is plugged into the fleet that one recently traded at $370k as well. Those are big numbers, and by my calc's and assumptions, the live weight dock price needs to be near $15/# to make it work. That's right at $30/# for tails, dock price! :yike: If anybody see them retailing at seafood shops anywhere I'd like to see what the prices are?? It's an interesting fishery, commercially, anyway.

Here's a local Market from last week...
-
We got our four limits again Sat..but I'm done for the year...had two of my bouys prop cut. Watched people do really stupid stuff...some people don't deserve to operate boat's....
And we normally avoid the crowds but people migrated into us Sat... mostly following their drifting pots...sigh .
-
Thanks for the info, that is a little higher than I thought it would be. But so is everything else these days...
-
I saw them at Central Market in shoreline 1 week before the opener at $34.99 lb live.
