I am actually just the opposite this year. Even with tag numbers dismall I have my wife, both daughters, father in law and myself all in for permits. We are in for a total of 50 categories. First kid I was all "Mr. Application Strategy" :tinfoil: hmmmm.... is it better to put in for something he can draw and burn the points, or is it better to be in the pool your last year with more points than most other kids..... :dunno:
Next year, I will sit Little Pathfinder down and say "Son, this year you are going to eat 8 points in every youth category. This is what it will feel like most years that you send your money to WDFW. Yeah, tell me about it. I retired from the Army and became a high school JROTC Instructor. Worst possible job for someone who likes to hunt (except maybe a taxidermist or a Game Warden...). 4 days in a row is about all I can finagle.

Have been drawn several Bull tags and Quality Bull, and Quality Buck.
Won the 2010 E Wa Raffle Elk Tag. 5 tickets for $30.00.
Health issues this year might force me to give up my Sheep Ram Tag that I'm getting this year, but hope not. 1st alternates B ware! Cancer is really reducing ability to get around and last years Moose hunt would not have been possible with out great friends and a chain saw winch! Have to face reality.
2 less Lattes a month and can afford to apply for special hunts.
I keep putting in but only 4 hunts that I can reasonably access .

I still get level 10 pumped even though chances are tough , shoot with the fact I do so many people in our groups apps I get just as excited checking there to make those special calls to them

When this page does start to blow up I will probably just wait until I get home from work and after dinner go through the results. By that time they should have all of the categories updated and viewable.My tradition has been to wait till after work, and after about 2-3, 6-8 second pour whiskeys, I start checking. Usually check my dads before mine, then the wife’s, and on to mine. Usually very anti climatic, except in 2019 when I drew bull moose, then half hour later realized my buddy put in w me, I got to call him and let him know!! That was fun!

It’s a sad realization that after just a few years of applying out of state, your drawing odds are about the same (or better) as having applied for 20+ years in WA. They're in the quality category. It's up to each person to decide if it's worth their quality points or not. I applied for a couple of quality blacktail hunts last year with 8 points, but didn't draw.

I would say 2/3 or more of the state agrees with you.
If I can manage to pull a quality mule deer tag soon I plan on applying for the “easier” blacktail quality tags in the near future…. But with 20 points and 2-6% odds it could take a while.

Sure you might stumble into a good one but that last few days in October is pretty dang good, along with the late general and late archery...all in the same units

That's actually one reason I applied for blacktail quality permits last year- I had a Weyerhaeuser permit that cost over $300, and I thought an additional two weeks of hunting would help justify the cost, in my mind anyway. But, like I said, I didn't draw, and ended up shooting a decent 2x3 buck on October 29. I suppose if I would've had the quality permit, I likely would have passed up that buck, and who knows, probably ended the season with no buck at all. 🙂
This year I'm in for a muzzleloader mule deer permit in a group application with ten points. Maybe we'll get lucky but I'm sure not counting on it.

Look at the cash cow the department created. 60,000 people paying for and building points, very little drop out… continuous revenue.
At this point, improving odds would require people to pay a lot more in permit application fees to maintain the same stream of revenue which would be a tough sell.
I’d drop all my points (15 in oils, 16+ in buck and quality deer) for a no point system and applying for only 1 oil or deer or elk. Awesome odds for drawing the hunt people would want…. But no one would say yes because of all the points they have already accrued.

I think for the time being id like 20% preference to the top holders..maybe keep adjusting this percentage until we curb off some points :dunno:
Smaller zones and more of them...I think most folks really only hunt a small area of each special area esp in the mtns on the west side..might need bigger areas on the east :dunno:
More buck tag opportunities on the west side
August blackatil hunts
Less rifle blacktail days in the rut
Winter elk hoof rot hunts..dang things are literally walking skeletons until they die...so sick of watching it
Oh...and I want faster draw results ;)

I'll take low odds in all categories over slightly better than low odds in one category and 0% odds in others.
Setting aside a percentage for max point holders also permanently reduces the odds of everyone but the top point total or two. If 20% were set aside, your children and grandchildren would have access to 20% fewer tags in their lifetime. It would sure help the top point holder that already have the greatest chance compared to the rest, but they make up probably 2% of applicants. The other 98% would face further draw odds reduction. Is the person with 22 points that much less 'deserving' than the person with 25 points to have the tags they're eligible for reduced 20% for their lifetime?
One thing they could do is have more hunt choices to spread applicants out. You can't convince me they couldn't have 1 rut tag for deer and elk in every GMU and every weapon type. It wouldn't do squat to the population but would sure help out odds. Everything could be capped at 2 hunt choices as well. Even then you put in for the long odds first choice and the better odds second. Should really be 1 choice if we wanted to increase the odds on the best tags that most people bellyache about odds on.
Bottom line is too many people applying for too few permits. The reality is Washington is a general tag state. The opportunity here comes in the form of being able to hunt every year rather than special permits. Permits need to be thought of as lottery, and accept that most people will never draw the good tags in their lifetime regardless of their points.

I have a daughter who is an excellent teacher, has a masters. She has killed two of the biggest bucks in our camp over the last 10 years. My son played “ a professional sport”, he always makes it to camp, he’s killed a few dandies also. Being a teacher is the most noble profession I personally know. not at all.. hardest part is drawing the tag. Hunting and finding the OIL animals isnt hard unless we are talking terrain or packing a moose :chuckle:

I haven't even checked today since it's Monday, but definitely will begin checking tomorrow afternoon. I'll be surprised if we don't have results by Thursday afternoon.I feel like if we don't have them by midday Friday something has gone wrong. There are multiple people at WDFW that are involved so if there was some sort of emergency with one of them or one of their family members I could see it getting delayed also. The Russians are busy so we shouldn't have a software issue.

Filled my tag on the second day. Passed up about 7. Did not have much vacation so was happy to connect on a 365" at 235yds and close to a road in the Blue Mtns. Some said I should have held
out for a larger one but I am extremly happy. Have not mastered on how to post pictures. Too big for my small house so it's hanging at Sportsmans Warehouse in E Wenatchee. I'll spend another $30 this yr as always.

Yup. My bad. Don't really know if the rest of the state is getting the same moisture we are here, but I hung trail cameras on Sunday and the vegetation is ridiculous, even out on the prairie.

The first time I was in Olympia and before I got home to seattle results were being posted. The second time was during covid and witnessing was done via Microsoft teams. That time results were a little later in the day.
The process is very very thorough with checks, double checks, cross checks.
When you are a witness you only witness a 2-3 of the draws and see that they do the exact same process for each draw. After you leave they finish up their work and start releasing the results a little at a time.
If there is a hitch in the process results would be delayed I am sure. If all goes well they should be out by close of business the day of witnessing or first thing the next morning.

WDFW staff is busy getting the draw done. They don't need a bunch of phone calls saying "why isn't the draw done? So and so was a witness and says it was done already." Also the website is setup to handle a certain amount of traffic. The day results come out they get a ton of traffic, I am sure more traffic than get any other day of the year. When the witness is done but results haven't been posted if everyone starts logging on to the site checking results it slows everything down and WDFW staff is trying to upload the results. Uploading the results takes a bunch of bandwidth. If that bandwidth is full of people logging on to check their results it makes loading the results that much tougher. Systems crash with that much activity all at once.
It just makes it easier for them to do their job if they can get the information uploaded and then let people know the results are posted. You will notice that you won't actually get an email saying results are posted until the afternoon or evening that they were posted even though the results may have been posted early that day or the day before.

And it always happens while I’m in there and get texts that the draws done and I can’t get on to check for awhile. So I’m hoping for tomorrow, but thinking more like next week. Yep. Started both boys at 12 years old, and 30+ years later we still hunt together. The memories and stories are priceless.
We chose Browning A-Bolt rifles in .30-'06 as their first rifles. They still carry those Brownings, and they are as accurate as ever.
We put in for the permit draws every year, and as partners for some of them. Hopefully we will be rewarded this year.

They changed it so youth had to have hunters Ed a few years back not sure for if you just had a wild id if you could I’d assume no but I dunno

Like I said in the voting thread. It took them like two weeks extra just to do the multi season draws and that’s extremely simple. This is a new system this year and I’m guessing they don’t have the bugs out yet. Hopefully next week, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s longer. Grab a beer, and have a relaxing weekend!
I thought that also, but the had issues with the system for multi that were fixed in the main draw. I know in the multi we couldn’t select a choice and submit. We had to call after the deadline so they could get on and do it for us. Sounded like anybody that wanted to change to points option had to do that. Was hoping that the multi was their small scale practice run of the new system and worked all the bugs out.

Nevada is 10 days or soThere a couple states that can be around 2 weeks some years and some species (example Idaho OILs) but there isn’t multiple states pumping them out in 10 days. Most states are closer to 3 weeks and WA typically meets that but likely won’t this year.

Saying the "end of June" is not same as picking a specific date up front. My point is that there is no reason they can't just pick a date. But the fact that they have never done the draw on the last date of June is consistent with their track record i suppose.

I just went back and looked at the Multiseason thread.
Draw was 19 days (13 business days) after the deadline.
The "Special Hunt" section was never "taken down" during the draw process. Results just showed up just before 11am.
Today we are 25 days (16 business days) past the deadline.
Yes, I was that bored at lunch.

(I’m actually betting on Thursday!). In all seriousness I hope your kids draw everything! Nothing better than the next generation putting a smile on their face and starting them young. I feel the same way about all permits. We have OTC for all those animals, permit odds would greatly go up if we had a little discernment and only could pick 1 species.
And this is coming from a guy who has drawn second deer, an antlerless elk, a bull, quality bull, quality deer in this system… would have never applied for those tags if I had to choose 1 species to apply for… well until I drew the dream hunt, then I would have to figure out which is next.

Yeah, after hearing the anecdotes of how the draw is run I think it’s time for an overhaul. This should be something that’s automatically run at 12:01am after the draw is closed and then results are available, at most, an hour later. It should be something that takes less than 24 hours including a verification the following day.
Somewhere, someone’s job is dependent on the draw being in the stone ages so that’s where it stays lol.

Not sure what their website/database is based on, but I’m a database manager for our database that has a web interface. When we are pushing major updates to our Production environment, it is one checkbox that takes the entire system offline. Anybody that’s currently logged in gets booted on a page refresh, and anyone trying to log in gets a message that we are down for maintenance/upgrades.In all honesty they should just shut the whole site down so their work and put it back up when finished. I think the witness thing has become a double edged sword. They want to get more witnesses so more people understand how it all works and get their questions answered but more witnesses mean more loose lips which increases traffic and slows the process down and potentially crashes the system.

They pull the tabs so you can't check your results and crash the site. Sounds like the postponing is BS to me.
There’s no postponing. There’s no delay. There’s a clogged up computer system because 21,009 people all clicking on refresh at the same time.

Postponing due to too many people checking is the fake news. The witness may or may not have been sent away and draw delayed, but it's due to something else on their end not working or crashed.

I don’t know how anyone is seeing anything. Neither my daughters or my profiles even show anything under licenses and permits it show a link for hunting privileges which is all blank, harvest reporting, and raffle tickets. No special permit options for either of us. Hoping that’s a good sign.

View Print Active Privileges does not show my draw. If I go to purchase a tag I can purchase my 2nd deer tag, but it does not show in Active Priveleges.Because you still need to buy it. You don't have that "privilege" yet
So maybe I still have a chance at an elk/deer/OIL tag. :)

Gotcha, I am always a day late and a dollar short on the draws. I had 3 points for the Strip, thought I was a shoo in. Should draw for sure next year. It will not let me add it to the cart or I would..... It does show one of my four choices on the license. I think we just have to wait and see when the other tabs come back for viewing selected or not selected

Thanks for that. Looks my daughter's youth deer points are zeroed out, but the elk youth points are still the same. So it appears that the elk youth draw hasn't been done yet. Her quality deer and elk points both increased from 4 to 5 points.

Does anyone else have the mandatory mountain goat test in their mandatory species id tests?? I havent looked in there before but was hoping that means I have a goat tag.. :dunno:I hate to be the wet blanket but that test renews every year. Still hope you draw.

Having a real wet spring,little warm weather and that berry crop will have bears everywhere can't wait.👍
I bought my son his first bear tag this year ,so if I can put him on one,that will be my first goal.

So, I called to see if I could surrender two of them and just keep the late tag. I did this thinking it would free those up for others to be awarded. I was sad to find out that while I can get my points back if i surrender those tags, nobody else will draw them. So, I took 3 tags out of the pool and will only be keeping one. Kind of a bummer it goes like that. Wonder how often that happens????

I drew the Blue Mtn. Foothills Late Muzzy tag, the Blue Creek Muzzy tag and a Blue Creek Antlerless tag.That is not how it is supposed to work. They are suppose to reallocate the 2 tags you turn back in.
So, I called to see if I could surrender two of them and just keep the late tag. I did this thinking it would free those up for others to be awarded. I was sad to find out that while I can get my points back if i surrender those tags, nobody else will draw them. So, I took 3 tags out of the pool and will only be keeping one. Kind of a bummer it goes like that. Wonder how often that happens????

Exact Situation where and why I think if we draw one tag we shouldn’t draw anymore. For that season with the limited amount of tags , ya the book says they can doesn’t mean they have to redistribute

Well it's not the Q-tag I had last year that I had to turn in because of the fire in the Bethel unit, I did draw a anterless elk in the Bumping unit. Hope I can fine some not burned up areas in there. Headed up in July to hopefully get my cameras from last year in the Bethel unit and now do some scouting in the Bumping unit. We used to hunt this unit back a few years ago when it was spike/anterless for archery.
I'm also in there for an antlerless, Archery?

I think Utah (or maybe it’s another state) does something like that. They have a sequence that the draw goes (Ex. Antlerless, Bull, Quality), and once you draw one, you are out of the next pool. I would support that. You could still buy points in all the categories, but would do something to improve draw odds at least a little.I drew the Blue Mtn.
