Title: 2009 Duramax Filters
Post by: steeleywhopper on May 27, 2022, 08:43:35 AM: My Dash is telling me there is 15% life left on my Fuel Filter. I am wondering what you type filters are the go to for the Duramax? Should I just take it to the dealership and let them do what they do? Truck has 60,000 miles on it and last fuel filter change was done right before I purchased it at 45,000 miles. Just curious, and this rig is bone stock, no upgrades or delete's.

Post by: bustedoldman on May 27, 2022, 08:58:55 AM: Just use stock again......But if you think you want to switch Fleetguard, Baldwin, Donaldson, Luberfiner...............Just pay attention to what stock micron is and buy the same or smaller, smaller means changing more often, lager probability of plugging injector goes up.

I don’t have a duramax but do have a ‘16 ram with the 6.7 cummins, I’ve always ran fleet guard filters for the fuel, water separator and oil and had good luck. If you really want to get into the performance stuff a FASS fuel system upgrade would be the way to go, that or change the filter block out for an aftermarket setup that accepts cat filters, much cheaper and better filtration.

I think I will take your experience and go with it. I will just use the dealership and let them do their thing as this is one truck I do not want to screw up.

Post by: TriggerMike on May 27, 2022, 09:46:15 AM: I did the conversion and use CAT fuel filters. It filters 2 micron absolute, as opposed to 2 micron nominal. Much, much better filtration than the stock filters.

Post by: HntnFsh on May 27, 2022, 10:33:31 AM: Stick with Factory fuel filter. Not only is it a great filter it is also a coalescing filter that keeps water out of your fuel system. AC Delco and Racor are the same filter.

Post by: Special T on May 27, 2022, 10:54:24 AM: I think with that low of a milage ride you need to install a secondary fuel filter. On my dodge I use a stock filter 10 micron and then have a large spin on 2 micron. Diesel fuel is dirty and adding a secondary will make your injectors last longer. this is especially important on common rail systems.

Interesting. I think on the 2003-2006 dodges its a 10 micron is what I was told, so I installed a 2 stage filtration system. If the stock is a 2 micron then some kind of prefilter that is a 10 would likely make everything last longer. I noticed my filter changes and or changes in milage were not needed as often.

Your probably right about the Dodge filters and it's probably because of the different style injectors. It also never hurts to add extra filtration.

One of the best mods a person can do to their Duramax is add a lift pump so the CP3 or CP4 don't have to suck so hard to get fuel to the system. That can be done with or without extra filtration. I have enough confidence in the stock filters on my LBZ Duramax that I added a Kennedy stand alone pump.

Would be easy to add extra filtration if I ever decided to.

When it crapped out I put an in tank system in, which is what the later designs had. In tanks are a pain to change sometimes however they never lose prime or suck dry. I cringe at the frame rail higher PSI lift pumps

I also don’t believe in shops doing basic maintenance because they rape the *censored* out of you. They’ll charge you $60 to put in a $15 filter that requires a 1/2” ratchet on-top of the motor. :twocents:

But they all could use one because the CP3 and CP4 suck the fuel from the tank to the engine instead of pushing the fuel from the tank to the engine. They really are a good addition even to the LBZ. Thats why I put one on mine. Even at 225,000 miles. If a person wants extra filtration throw on an Air Dog or Fass system but go with the lowest flow you can. I think they are 95 - 100 gph. The only reason you would need more is if you wanted to boost your hp up over about 500.

I would never run a WIX fuel filter on a Duramax. They are a junk filter for that application. I highly recommend the AC Delco, Racor Fuel filters. I do run the WIX oil filters though.
Dont forget to change your tranny filter also. I only run Allison and always make sure the magnet is in place.

There is enough info over on the Duramax forum to keep you reading for days about Duramax engines, fuel filters, and lift pumps!

Water and air in the fuel destroys duramax injectors more than anything. The air is in the form of very, very small bubbles.

That particular year of duramax did not have the fuel pump issues like the 2011-2018 engines did. Keep it stock. The biggest killers of an fuel system are water and cavitation(air) and contamination. Every time you open a fuel system there’s a possibility for contamination. Don’t fill up at seedy gas stations and change your filters at regular intervals and you’ll be fine. And for goodness sake don’t put a tuner on it!
