Purchased my first AR yesterday. Have no experience with them since I left the Air Force 25+ years ago. My question is.....is it worth spending the extra $ for Magpul mags or are the cheap ones just as good.

Not sure how cheap you're looking by Pmags can usually be found in bulk at less that $10.00 each online.
-
Congrats.
Don't cheap out on mags.

They are $15 everywhere I've been looking. Seen some generic both locally and online for between $8-$10

gen3 mags, 30 rnd, 13.99 @ gunmagwharehouse. Couple 10s for hunting and a vest full of 30s.
-
Don’t know if they Are still on sale but midway had a recent sale 10 pmags for 99$.

Big Tex Ordnance has 10 pack of gen 3 30 round pmags with windows for $137.50, no tax and free shipping if you use code- Airlift Wa at checkout.

I have a variety of them and they all work but for some reason I prefer PMags. I have some in every capacity, including 5-round which is useful for shooting from a bench rest.
-
I bought a cheap 60 round and it sucks! Maybe it needs broke in?? But I’m sticking w name brands from now till July 1. :bash:

My experience has been the larger the mag, the more problems. Not saying it's a linear correlation between capacity and failures, though. 10, 20, 30 had little difference, but there was a little increase. Once going to 45,50, 60 or drum mags, there seemed to be a few more jams.

Just ordered a few things from these guys . Shipping was $8.95 and no tax .

Bownell's is having the same "Washington Sale", just over $10 per mag.
-
I just packed up 4, 30 rnd for $11.99 ea at Sportsmans Whse, Pmags.
-
Gen 3 Pmags are cheap and just work. Why take chances with off brands that are the biggest cause of failure to fire situations.
-
Like said buy magpul and you wont have any issues and stack them deep
