Unbelieveable, the wife and son in law drew this with 11 points combined. They drew cow moose last year in Huckleberry, I drew bull moose in 2019 in selkirk. I've hunted the republic area in the past for deer but never saw moose. So I'm reaching out to anyone who is willing to help with some intel??? We will be putting boots on the ground and gas is going to be a killer, but looking forward to hunting moose again. I've heard this is the land of big bull moose, just don't know where to start. Thanks for any help huntwa family.

Congratulations! We spend a lot of time in the 101. If I come across any solid intel, I’ll let you know. Good luck.

PM sent Best of luck!

Thanks for PMs, and just to let others know, any intel I receive will not be put on social media.

Congratulations on the good luck for your wife and son in law. I think I had Kettle as my 4th choice. Should be a really fun hunt but I do wonder how tough it might be to find moose, looking at the statistics from last year it took 23 days per kill. And only 8 out of 10 hunters harvested a moose. Hopefully that was only due to people holding out for bigger bulls, and not due to numbers being way down because of the wolves.
Oh, and there is some general information in the WDFW Hunting Prospects if you want to check that out. All they have right now is the 2021 prospects but it's probably not going to be any different as far as areas they recommend looking at to find moose.

Congrats Jerry

I think the people that couldn’t fill their tag probably had time restraints and or had some kind of unforeseen issues come up. There’s plenty of moose around the 3 units available for that tag.

I might have a good starting point for you in 204. Might even have a small place to stay if needed! :)

I still can't believe buckjunkie's bull from a couple years ago, it looks like something from alaska. Lots more info to dig up but the research is part of the fun. Can't wait to see my son in laws face if/when he puts a dinosaur moose on the ground!!

I'm wishing you guys the best! But On my 2019 hunt moose were very scarce in all the places I spent time in. 12 days of moose hunting and only saw 2 baby bulls on the first day. Only saw maybe 6 or 7 moose total and that may have been counting some of them twice. If I could go back in time I would start my hunt earlier, like maybe on day one instead of waiting until Oct 8th. That dang tag is still in one of my junk drawers somewhere. :bash:

I drew it in 2013 and had same issues, warm weather not good, scouted all summer- saw very few, (side note: had scouted the exact area/pond that Hirshey killed her good one, in the same year, very little sign of moose there for us....guess we were wrong LOL) 6 trail cams out-only got pics of 1 decent bull and a cow and calf. I hunted hard the first 12 days and saw 2 dinker bulls. Hunted 2 weekends after that with nothing, then on last week there Ended up killing one that was well below my modest goal, but that's OK, I got to do something most never will in WA St.
Its a HUGE area to cover. Best advice is to not chase ghosts. Many times you will here about good bulls being seen at X spot. They most likely will not be there when you get there, and you will spend a ton of time traveling back and forth. Talk to the "cowboys" working the cattle, they spend alot of time out there and have a good pulse of what's going on.
Give me a shout and I will give you any and all the info I collected in my time up there.

Some good advice we were given after drawing a quality permit ( not an OIL) is not to chase “hear says”. Some guy says he seen an animal at x spot, then you run to it… waste of time. Focus on an area and put your time into it. Not a for sure deal but less running around is best.
-
Sorry I didn’t get back to people quicker, I’ve read all the PM’s and trying to digest it all and put a game plan together. We really appreciate all the PM’s and other info passed on! I learned with my own 2019 bull moose tag that chasing ghosts (great way to put it) is a waste of time. This unit is almost too big, no way we will be able to scout it all, I’m hoping we can get a good starting point, talk w biologist and gets some boots on the ground. Looking back, the Selkirk was much easier to scout. These gas prices definetly will have an impact on us and getting to know as much as possible. When I drew the Selkirk I drove over from western Wa every other weekend after results came out. Not going to be able to do that this time, which really sucks. Anyway, again, really appreciate any info, and please know that info past on that is direct or sensitive won’t be posted.
-
My advice is scout on weekends when you don't burn vacation time, save all your vacation time for the hunt, plan as much time for the hunt as possible, moose numbers are only a small fraction of what they used to be. You could get lucky with a couple quick kills but plan lots of time for a worst-case scenario.
-
Thanks Dale, yeah, the son in law works 4-10’s and I get every other Friday off so we should have a decent amount of 3 day weekends!
-
Remember there's 40 Tribal permits for moose in those units as well. Some of the dumbest advice I've ever heard would be no not take chances and follow up on specific bull. Many of the biggest bulls killed in your units units we're done exactly that way. :twocents:
-
40! :yike:
-
40! :yike:
I may be high on that number. Was thinking 20 archery and 20 rifle. Might be less. It may have changed recently. Maybe 10 and 15 these days. I know on the south half it's considerably more, like 50.

Super late to say huge congrats. You’ve had a taste of what Washington moose hunting is, and I know you will dig in get it done for the wifey and son in law. It’s all about the journey

Let's not derail this thread. I was simply letting the OP know that several of the biggest moose ever killed in this state were guys going away from their routine and following up a specific lead. Knowing who you're dealing with goes a long ways.
-
 I will absolutely follow up, I think it matters how recent the sighting was. Thanks guys!
-
Thanks for posting that Ridgeratt. Looks like 15 total permits these days.
-
Is this for 101 ferry unit.
If it was me ,just me.
First place I'd look would be around lake Ellen.
Drainage that hold water.
South fork,bangs MT rd.
Anyplace with a creek or substantial water source.
No gonna lie ,been a few years since I crossed the river to hunt. But I have a few friends that go that way .
Last time I heard of a monster was last year around that lake Ellen . I also didn't know there was tribal tags too, maybe somebody got him.
Good luck I'll keep my ear out.
-
I remember hearing somewhere that the tribal permits are not OIL and so a lot of them go unfilled.
-
65 permits for just those gmus?!? Wow!
-
65 permits for just those gmus?!? Wow!
No. Just 15 total permits for the North Half, which includes all the units the OP drew. There are 60 permits for the South Half, which is all Reservation.

So I am curious, and haven't heard any thoughts yet, I know we should be there for the opener and take advantage of the rut, then I heard the deer hunters come in and things slow down. In between the rut and Nov is it the toughest time to find a bull? If a guy had two weeks would it be best to do one week the first week and one in middle of Nov? Or last week of Nov? hate to have them shoot a bull and have its antlers fall off!! lol
-
I would personally hunt the 1st two weeks if I only had 2 weeks off. Never know what deer hunter you'll run into who saw a big bull in a specific spot. If I had one more week off, it'd be the last week in November. I'd take the tiny risk of having a horn pop off. :twocents:
-
I do prefer searching for moose after the leaves have fallen and days are colder. Falcon killed his bull IIRC the 3rd week of November, my step-son who had one of the North Half tags in '20 killed his bull about the 10th of November. Don't know if things slow down when deer and elk hunters are out there, but they are a good source of information. Sometimes they just saw one down the road, usually they are very helpful and may even get their hands dirty.
-
I had the permit. hunted hard first full 2 weeks. warm weather(moose dont like heat) THICK country. saw very few, called alot and only had 1 interaction with a dinker.
hunted 2 more weekends after the 1st 2 weeks and killed a bull then.
I had planned on having a later week off to hit it at the end if needed.
I agree with others advice, once the leaves fall they will be easier to see, save some time for then.
Most of all have fun!
-
I wouldn’t waste my time. Just turn the tags back in.

I was waiting for you to chime in, your advice is always priceless!! :chuckle:
-
I had the tag in 2018. I hunted the first 8 days and we saw 19 moose. 10 bulls, 7 cows and 2 calves. Saw two good bulls.
Went back after Thanksgiving and it was tough. We saw a cow and a dink bull the first 5 days. Others we talked to were seeing moose and in their opinion good bulls, but we managed to avoid them. Got lucky with two and a half days left and killed a crazy big bull. There was another good bull with him which another hunter killed the next day.
Bring tire chains or a snow machine in the late season.
I’m not a moose expert, but I would definitely be there for for the opener. We had decent luck calling and of course spotted some chasing cows.
-
Anyone have a number to a biologist in that area besides Annemarie Prince? I’ll give her a call but with the Selkirk tag in ‘19 she was pretty vague.
-
Unbelieveable, the wife and son in law drew this with 11 points combined.
I don't ever want to hear you bitch about drawings again!

Heading over to scout early tomorrow, leaving west side at 2 am. Heading to republic, my question, best way to get there?? Isn’t there a ferry you have to take if you take 21? If, how early does it start running?? Coming from bonney lake, taking I-90
-
I'd just head up to Tonasket and go east on 20.

Keller Ferry, 6am-midnite 7 days

Keller Ferry, 6am-midnite 7 days
thank you for those hours! Heading over Sherman so bobcat, is your way still the recommended way? If I remember correctly, if you miss the ferry it’s about a 45 min turn around?
-
Or longer if theres a line and you miss the first ferry (small boats). If going east of Sherman, look at 21 to 25 north to Kettle then west to the east slopes of Sherman. Any way you decide, nice drive, scenic and pay attention to speed limits in the little towns.
-
Thanks!
-
Couple questions from a wet sider, just before chelan and the bridge, are all those boats fishing for kings? Also, why cover up the fruit trees, looks like a ton of work??
-
Keeps the birds from harvesting the fruit first.
-
Kings and sockeye(run is big)
Nets provide shading for sensitive apples like honeycrisp
Have fun and let us know what ya see up there.
-
Thanks guys, Brewster had a ton of boats too, all in one area. 12 miles from tonasket now

Lol, the son in law wants a divorce, from me!! Lol. Did see buck going into town, two point. Saw 2 moose so far, small bull with one side half grown to the other, one cow. Stayed at Davis lake, that took us about 3 days to get to, too many damn roads intertwine!! And it’s a looong way out here, no moose yet here. Breakfast at the lake is pretty damn nice though! Lots of bugs!
-
.
-
Love camping at Davis Lake, and have hunted there a great deal in the past, but it hasnt been even remotely good for several years because of predators and poaching.
-
So after our first scout trip we found a couple spots that will be our day one hunts, a couple that will be on the radar. That unit is really big, almost too big, wonder why wdfw doesn't cut it in half, east/west type deal. Anyway, can't nail down what to do for our camp, didn't see a whole lot of dry camping areas and I want to be mobile so the wall tent will prob stay home this trip. Found an RV resort that wants $550 for the month, which is cheaper than paying for 2 weeks. It's fairly central to the areas we like but still going to put some miles on during the hunts, probably going to just put the trailer in the rv spot. Definitely going to bring the quads, couple roads scratched up the son in laws nice truck. Did see a cow and a bull, the bull was not a shooter, broken half antler on one side. Tough unit to scout will so much to look at and knowing moose could be scattered at any spot, son in law saw a white wolf on sherman pass. I was busy sitting on a log so I didn't get to see it. Looking forward to the hunt, cooler temps and less bugs!! The bugs were insane!!!!!! They would chase you back in the truck, up your nose, in your eyes and ears, bug spray is a must for early scouting, or the therma cell. C'mon October!!
-
I agree the kettle range unit is huge and overwhelming to think you would need to scout it all... It certainly could be cut in two and be a east and west kettle unit but that would make to much sense for wdfw.... Good luck I know exactly how you feel right now....Where should I hunt and where should I camp.... :dunno:
-
Ive wondered the same thing that unit is massive and realistically should make a Kelly hill tag
-
I guess it’s like the Selkirk, drive, drive and drive! And wait for one to be standing there! At least with having a bit of experience now I won’t be so discouraged when I don’t see moose around every corner. I can’t wait to see my son in laws face and my wife’s when/if they put a big bull on the ground!
-
Yep, you will be doing a bunch of driving, and yes, they just show up standing next to the road. Twenty years ago, about 10 years or so after the White Mtn fire(1988), I had a place that I could be guaranteed to see multiple moose on opening morning of deer season. Went in there two years ago scouting for my step-son's North Half tag, couldn't see my hand in front of my face, the lodgepole regen was 30 feet tall and thick!
There has been lots of logging on each side of HWY 20 on the east side of Sherman in the last few years and has pretty good habitat, so yes, it is back to lots of driving. You'll find a couple, hopefully not both at the same time!
-
Thanks, we talked about two at the same time, that would be some work. But maybe it's possible with the rut?? We will take two big bulls fighting in front of us!!
-
My teenage son and I scouted for 3 days, last weekend, I also have a tag. We put about $250 in gas through my Wrangler, ruled out a ton of country, ruled a bunch in. We saw sign pretty much every time we got out of the rig and hiked a closed road, so it seems like the moose are extremely well scattered living solo here and there. So unlike hunting elk or mule deer, where you can look at a topo map and a few sattelite images and have a grasp of the habitat. Many of the clear cuts and burns that look good on Google Earth are so grown up, or not at all what you expect. Means there is no substitute for putting in some road miles.

Be careful where you use the quads, the Colville National Forest is unfriendly for quads. Good Luck!

Thanks for the heads up, does it help if it’s street legal? I have a plate.

I don't think that makes any difference except that you can use the county roads within the forest, those are the roads your truck is fine on!

Just give me your credit card Bryan!! We certainly don’t need a big fire just weeks before the season!!

Sounds like a few fires over there, most are still pretty small. My guide says it will be fine come Oct

Day 1 today! So far it seems the rut hasn’t really kicked off yet, kinda strange year, I’m hoping that is perfect for us. Bulls have been quiet during the day, we are blessed to do this morning what so many apply for!!
-
Good luck. Can’t wait to see pics and hear the stories. I sure hope you have lots of help If you get two down at the same time. That sounds like it would be an epic problem to have to deal with
-
Good luck Jerry!
-
PM Sent. I'm not familiar with the unit boundaries on this tag but I know where two moose were standing a few days ago! Lol
-
Weather isnt in your favor this next week
-
True that, it’s hot today!!! Saw one lone cow at 11:30, about half the moose hunters are in the same area, lol.
-
Thermometer in South Canada is reading 90.
-
Good luck Jerry. Keep covering area and you’ll be fine. Hope the rut has kicked in
-

Thats only 5 people herding them in circles. Doesn't seem like a lot of pressure for such a large area.
-
Good luck! Can't wait to hear how it goes!
-
Another long hot day, zero animals seen. We did find where a bull was this morning, fresh rut pit, tracks and poop! I think we scared him off w the quads. Going to go back in the morning and do some calling, hopefully he’s still around. This warm weather is crazy!
-
Local news is forecasting these temps for the whole week. She is saying 78 degrees going to into the weekend.

He won’t go far, get in before daylight and call. They are now rutting hard, I’m seeing them all over north Idaho.
-
Well, we got in just before dark, called about every 20 minutes. Couple cow calls, few grunts at a time. Stayed for 1.5 hours and nothing, his rut pit doesn’t stink so he’s prob not around now. We have seen no rut action so far, a guide I’m talking to saw 2 bulls yesterday just standing around each other, he tried to get them out of the thick stuff for a client and they wouldn’t make a sound. There was a cow in the area and they weren’t interested?? Not sure what’s going on, even w the heat, don’t they still have a time clock for breeding?? Going to try a different area and road hunt the cuts east of curlew tonight. Everyone is telling me it’s pointless to hunt moose in this heat in the middle of the day, I’m starting to believe that!

Keep it up, TH. Knock down a nice one.

Neighbor ran into a moose chaser 2 days ago. He said that his name was Brian. He has been scouting for the last two months. If he is a member I won't disclose his location. But send me a pm.

You need a cold night, even one could get them interested. I remember hunting WA in 2003 and it was a brutal heat week, hot like this, we stopped after a couple days and came back in November once it was cold and leaves had fallen and it was much better. We only saw a few small bulls during those first couple days, I had a cow only tag.
-
Just a heads up to others with this tag, Alec road west of curlew suuuucks if you have a long bed full size truck!! Lol.

I wish I knew that’s where you went, I could have warned you. It’s tight.
-
And I’m not sure that’s moose country??
-
We saw sign up there when I had the tag, no moose seen though, only hunted it twice.
-
Been years since I was up that way.
They are not far from some kind of water, with this heat.
Can't wait for harvest pics.
Goodluck👍
-
Have you been in the South Sherman Creek drainage? Or up Lane Creek?
-
Just got a phone call on a Moose sighting. It ran across highway 20 close to mile post 283. When the member gets to where he can post the video he will. Said that it was a keeper. Looking like it was headed for Bonaparte Lake.
He is driving back to the westside today.
-
Just got this photo. Not sure how close he was a cell phone pic. But has a turn down on the left side. Said he had to run up the bank to get this.
-
Another photo with out zooming it up.
-
That is a nice one for sure. I’m sure trophy is plenty busy being picky and choosing the right one to shoot.
-
First saw that guy crossing at about a mile down the road thinking there was a loose horse but as I approached, I noticed the car ahead slowing near the crossing point, (As was another approaching from the west). As I got there, I spotted it just off the road Dove for the shoulder and started digging for the Camera. Thinking I had very little time I gave up, grabbed the phone and climbed up the bank. This was when I learned it was a bull. H was in no hurry until he saw me and then only started walking off to the north. Wish I had the Canon for the pics! I had no Idea he had that nice of headgear until I got a good look at that picture. 3 PM yesterday
-
No change in the weather until maybe Tuesday next week. Then a slight cooling off into the mid to higher 60's.
-
Sorry for being away so long, it’s been a crazy few days. The main goal for the wife and I when this hunt started was, we wanted our son in law to have a good hunt and possibly end up w a good bull. Well, it worked out perfectly after a few long, uneventful days. After being on a few moose hunts, I’m starting to realize to be patient, moose are the most patient animals I’ve ever known.
I try to teach my SIL that hunting is highs and lows, and it changes in a second. That is how this hunt went for us. First few days were very slow, hot and no rut action. We checked several different areas and called into lots of deep canyons, nothing. Got a tip about an area, checked it out, and everything changed! Had 3 bulls with one cow within 180 yards and less, our quads didn’t bother them at all. One bull was a shooter for the SIN (son in law), he agreed. He had a small window between trees, he was nervous, and having his father in law jabbing in his ear, didn’t help! He calmed himself down, I shut up, lol, and he made a great shot. I’ve mostly seen ground shrinkage in my hunting life, but this was reversed. The kid was beyond excited, the eye guards were much better than we knew. It was perfect!

Great bull for sure. Nice work.
-
A side story to our hunt, my wife and I hired Archery Outfitters to guide us on this hunt. We had planned to hunt with Josh on the 9-14th of sept. Well, things weren’t going well all around as far as the rut goes, so Josh and I decided it would be better to reschedule our hunt till Nov, he didn’t want to just take our money, he wanted us to have a good hunt. I respect the hell out of that!! That being said, from the start my wife and I have set our goal high. We are not in this hunt just to kill, we want a special bull and we passed a couple, one was just a couple eye guards away from dying.
We drove away from this first chapter feeling absolutely fulfilled, can not wait till the next! Bring on November !!
-
Be careful when cutting teeth out! And it took 6 hours to break down his bull and pack it to the truck!
-
Congrats on a great moose and some outstanding memories with the SIL!!! That is so cool. Glad it worked out so well. There needs to be highs and lows to every real hunt, it is definitely a part of hunting, it is what makes success so much more that a full freezer!
-
Josh is a great kid, you wont be disappointed with hiring him for your wifes hunt. Congrats to your SIL on a good bull and hopefully your wife finds the bull she's looking for.
-
Thanks guys, Josh seems legit, can’t wait to hunt w him in the later hunt! I’ve heard nothing but good things about him!
-
Congrats to the SIL. Now it's your wife's time! Good luck!
-
Right on nice Bull!
-
Right on jerry! Great bull
-
Awesome! Congrats to your Son in law. And glad you didn’t get to find out how fun it is to pack two moose out at one time. Good luck to your wife
-
Nice bull.
Congratulations
-
 Sure IS a fine Bull! Congratulations to your son in Law.
-
Nice bull and Congratulations to all!
-
nice bull congrats. These moose hunts aren't as easy as they used to be. Glad you got one out of the way and Josh will get you another good one I'm sure.
-
Jerry
Great work on Brandans bull. Also a good decision to wait until Nov for Julie’s I think
You will have a happy ending😜
-
Boy TH, that's a fantastic bull. Nice job on the finger, too. Get it stitched.
-
Heck ya ,on the bull.
Been there done that with the finger.
It will heal, and remind ya not to do that.
Congrats👍
-
Boy TH, that's a fantastic bull. Nice job on the finger, too. Get it stitched.
The wife works w doctors so she called them on the way home, but when you are past 24 hours they don’t like to stick it. We’ve been cleaning it and keeping a wrap on it. The doc said it should be fine, I’ll just have a bigger scar, who doesn’t on their hands.
Thank you guys, really appreciate the kind words! Moose are becoming one of my favorites now, just a cool animal. There size is unbelievable!
-
Congrats Buddy - Way to get it done. Nice Bull!!!

Thanks man, one more to go!! You guys gonna kill some big mulies this weekend???
-
Congrats, that is a great bull, hopefully your wife can get one similar.
-
Congrats to the S I L
, I have never been good at passing on animals but best of luck to your wife
-
That is the plan. I'll let ya know how things work out.
-
Have fun and good luck!
-
Great job, that's got to be very satisfying following a lead and having a great DIY experience. Moose are so much cooler, bigger, and more mysterious than you realize until you are hunting them. I also have the tag and have 8 days in at this point, 7 were all on foot, 1 day we did the "Sherman 500" and road hunted mostly to look at some ground for the later half of the season. Hoping the bull move up out of the Alders and into the burns. We were able to put eyes on 3 bulls on foot in the first 3 days, nothing since. Seemed to me like the rut peaked from the 5th - 10th based on my trail cam pics, then went pretty quiet. We were finding lots of rubs and fresh tracks early in the season and it seemed like everything was laid up these past few days. At least as far as I can tell. Digging a bull out of some this timber is quite a challenge. We had bulls grunting and moving early, but have failed to be able to call anything in with anything other than making noise with our feet. We did manage to call in a wolf to about 6 yards, that was intense.
Good luck to your wife, maybe we'll cross paths later in the year. I'll post some pics and a report on another thread at some point.
-
Looking at his website has he updated any photos from 2017?
http://archery-outfitter.com/
We use the very best 3rd cutting certified weed free alfalfa that there is in the valley, 25 tons of it, 5 tons apples, 5 tons of corn, along with 2 tons salt, trace minerals, & selenium.
He's got a ton of money into a Chum line.
Went for a cruise yesterday and saw they have cut in a new road after the Mack mountain fire to south boulder creek. It had a ton of traffic on it and some interesting signage.
-
So wolf impact has skyrocketed, baiting law changed to 10 gallons per day, that alone would be disastrous for a guide. :dunno:
-
Josh told me his site is out of date, they are working on it. But with talking w him, he’s a straight shooter, and working hard for his current client. We hope we can spend time w him in the late season, but we are preparing to DIY. If his client pays him till the end of the season, the wife and I will stay in the wall tent and get it done. Can’t wait for the snow to fly!! Flygiude, best of luck to you, hopefully we can share a beer. Be back over there nov 17-26.
-
Remember they start dropping about nov 25th. Don’t tug too hard
-
Few years ago, friend was doing the late rifle (deer) here in 121 and watched a bull drop one on the 18th, grabbed it after bull walked over a small rise then went in and got the other one the next day. Certainly the exception, but ya never know.
-
That would be a bummer to see a big bull w one side!! If I have to pull one out w my crab rope, I’ll stay away from the head gear!
-
Several years ago, there was a member who either had the tag or was involved in a moose hunt. I think they had the horns fall off when they shot it. I'm sure they could post up the photos if they read this.
-

I filmed one a couple years ago that dropped about the 13th. I assumed it was broke off as I have also seen, but nope naturally shed.

Yes that would be nice to hook up, I have a fair amount of flex time and may hunt right through Thanksgiving as well or the last few days. My late November schedule is really open so I may be up there. Plenty of bulls for everyone.
-
You’re never going to live it down if your wife shoots a bigger bull than you!! :chuckle:
Tell her good luck over there

A member on here drew the tag a few years ago. He was so intent on killing a monster bull (and was being super selective) that he ran his late tag out to the last day. If I remember the story correctly, he found the bull he wanted on the day before the close, but was stalking with his bow and ran out of daylight. When he came back the next morning, the bull had shed (I think one antler?). He shot him and spent the next couple of days looking for the antler (which he found).
-
Thank God he found the other side, what a nightmare on such a great tag! From what I’m gathering, more bulls have their gear than those that drop in late nov. Buckjunkie’s bull is an sci world record and he killed it the second to last day in Nov.

So, are you going to be beating the roads to death around Nancy and Deadman creek?
-
So, are you going to be beating the roads to death around Nancy and Deadman creek?
not this coming weekend.
-
I thought I spotted a moose driving to my new house in the 105 but ended up being a big bay horse in the cattails
-
Quick trip over this weekend, snowed about 8-10 inches up in the hills over night. Drive all day and didn’t cut a single moose track, couple cougar, lots of deer and thought in the deep snow we were on a huge bull track… after about 3/4 of a mile tracking, it was a moo cow!!! The deep snow made it hard to tell. Supposed to be a wind storm tonight till around 11 am tomorrow, didn’t bring a saw so not sure what to do in the AM. Oh well, love this country, we are having a good time! I will say this though, if you are a democrat, you can kiss my behind!! Just paid over $100 for 17 gallons of diesel, wake the F up dems!!
-
Had a great morning, had a tip on a couple good bulls so as we we pulled on our road and waited just a couple more minutes, another moose hunter pulled up behind us. We talked for a minute and he chose to follow us, ok, our tip was for a certain spot which was close so I figured I’d let him pass after a short 1/2 mile. I hate people behind me, I’d rather they just go by. Well, 100 yards down the road I see a bull cross, we get up to it and it’s just standing 20 yards off the road. It’s not what we are looking for so I motion to the guys behind us that there is a bull right here. We pull up a ways and watch them shoot the bull, we were happy for them. Then after we unloaded the quad about a mile later, we saw another bull, too small. But just seeing bull moose is a great day! We didn’t kill anything but we could have! Pics are the bulls we passed on. Heading back on Nov 17 to hunt with Josh from archery Outfitters, hunted with him tonight and is a great guy, he has a ton of moose knowledge!
-
The bulls we passed
-
Sounds like you two are doing great! Looking forward to some grip and grin pics.
-
Thanks man, it’s been pretty great. With my Selkirk tag I only had to pass 1 or 2 bulls, this tag, we have passed up 8 bulls so far. One was pretty tough! Can’t wait till our last trip!
-
Good luck !
-
Good luck! Just coming back from where you were last year. Deer pop is down a bunch. Tell Julie good luck!
-
You may have your work cut out gettin back to some of the places.
-
Over 30” of snow now, could get interesting! Our next trip will be with the guide, he has a side by side w tracks, should be good.
-
There was a single set of moose tracks just before the top of Boulder pass yesterday on the eastside of it.
-
The side-by-side was snow tracks will be an adventure in itself. Best of luck.
-
Another tag holder killed an absolute giant yesterday, I hope he posts his story!

Definitely a great looking bull of a lifrtime. Hopefully he posts some pics where the 2 hunters heads don't fit in the moose's ear. :chuckle:

I honestly have no idea. I don't know squat about scoring a moose. I don't even know the score of the record but we have all seen the pics...this one looks a lot like it.
-
I told him huntwa needs pics!! :chuckle:
The hunter is an exceptional writer and I'm sure he'll post up something worth reading...after the drooling ends :chuckle:

Hi everyone, I am the guy lucky enough to tag this bull and am over the moon about it. Plus my older teenage son was with me along with one of my best pals. I will post a full run down on the hunt but am having trouble getting pics to upload here so I'll have to resize them all. Thanks to everyone on the site here for all the help and encouragement. It seems like everyone was ready to offer up any leads, advice, and help they could offer. I hunted very hard.... but was simply fortunate to cross paths with this bull. I have a whole story written up and will share it soon along with some more pics of the entire trip.
-
Can’t wait for the story. That’s awesome your son and friend were able to be there.
-
Incredible
-
Simply awesome
Looks like it took a wrong turn at the Yukon River...
-
WDFW has secretly been transplanting Yukon moose in Ferry & Stevens counties. A neighbor has a friend and his cousin saw them release one on a full moon near Bulldog.
-
Amazing moose!
-
Ever since I’ve seen that bull it’s been consuming me, I can’t image killing such a great animal! I can only hope my wife has a chance at something even half way close to that! One less tag holder in the woods now! Congrats on a true OIL animal!
-
Holy crap that’s a big ass moose
I’d be happy with that in the Yukon
-
:yike: Wow! Congrats. That’s a stud bull for sure!

-
Epic bull. Can’t wait to read the story. Congrats!
-
Did that tag justice. Judas Priest….
-
That bull is incredible! I have no idea how moose scores rack up but will that test the bull buckjunkie shot?!?!
-
Very Nice Bull Flyguide.
There was a double droptine bull in the boulder area. I haven't seen it in a while but if this was him you have done well.
-
That bull is incredible! I have no idea how moose scores rack up but will that test the bull buckjunkie shot?!?!
I’ve seen it referred to as the potential new WA state record. Buckjunkie’s is, I believe, the SCI world record.
-
It would score very well Boone as well. Crazy awesome moose

You are correct. This bull should out score mine B & C. My bull scored 178 B & C
-
Buckjunkie-
If you don’t mind can you link your thread or post a pic of your bull in this one for comparison of giants
-
Unreal!!
-
Boone and Crocket moose scoring is wonky in my opinion and does not really capture what most value in a moose....Just my opinion. You can have super week fronts / brow palms and long paddles / main palms and score well. You can also have a brush bull with super wide paddles that turn in that will score worse than a smaller paddled bull that flattens out with greater width.
I have a Gross 181 2/8th Net 176 7/8th moose. I would need to see other pics of the moose in question, but I believe it will score better based on the 1 photo.
-
We now have a bull in our sites (on camera I should say) just hope he sticks around till friday, he's nothing like the giants we are talking about, but he's a good bull. Hopefully Flyguide will start his thread with his story and pics.

Hey thanks again everyone for all the enthusiasm, it's a really rare and unique bull. I'll post a really good story and plenty of pics in another thread. You can only post a couple of pics per post, so am trying to set it up for a quality play by play. It was rough scored at 191 gross, 185 net. Again, this is rough scored green so don't hold me to it haha!
-
HOLY $%$!!!!!!
MONSTER BULL!!!
Can't wait for the story
:yeah:
Jaw dropper for sure

Awesome bull!! Cant wait for the story.

Heading out in the early morning, start hunting w Josh on Friday and the excitement is off the charts. He’s helping w a terminal tag right now so we are hoping it all works out for them. The weather is actually a positive for a change, we have a week or so to find a decent bull. Hope to post pics soon.
-
Right on, best of luck to you guys! Weather is good visibility should be prime! Looking forward to pics and a great story! Stay safe, have a blast, and make some awesome memories!
-
Thank you!!
-
A friend of mine found his first fresh moose shed today. Hopefully things work out for you guys.
-
Our guide has seen a couple smaller bulls missing antlers, we will see.
-
It is cold up in the hills! Lots of tracks in the snow, seen two cows and watched a permit holder kill a great deer. Not bad for half a day hunt. This next week should be good!
-
Jerry,
Nobody will hunt harder than you to get that bull. Get after him, and good luck
-
Thanks man!
-
Good luck out there! It'll be a well earned bull!
-
This will knock the luster off you. 🥺🥶
-
Yeah, it’s bitter cold.
-
It’s friggin cold!! But this early winter and cold temps is just what we needed. What a great day! Teaser till I get a whiskey and some sleep!
-
.
-
You big tease!!!! Let’s see the picture
-
Tag triangles, you give us tag triangles? Oh heck no. :mgun: We want the goods.
-
But it’s late and the fire water is kicking in!! It’s a long story, not a monster But a good bull. So glad we waited and passed several bulls.
-
She scoped herself, rookie!
-
Nice who hasn’t had that congratulations
-
Congrats J&J! That scope kiss doesn't look pleasant!
-
Not sure where at start, but you guys know most of this adventure already. We are just super happy w how this entire hunt went, passed up around 10 bulls that I can remember, went from 80+ degrees to zero in the hills. Josh Judd our guide for this trip thankfully bought a sided by side w tracks just before the season started, no way we get this bull w/out that machine! When you go into an area with 20+ inches of snow (30+ when it fell) and there are zero human tracks, you feel like a kid in a candy store! The day we showed up at Josh’s house we got settled in and for the afternoon hunt we went to an area where that morning he had seen a good bull and was on one of his many cameras. We tried tracking him in the snow for a ways but he went into some thick blow down crap, and the snow at times was thigh deep. We decided to keep hunting on the SS (side by side) and cover ground. Didn’t see any bulls that night.
The bull he had seen earlier was one of our target bulls that he had on camera, we didn’t know at the time that he would come back into our lives. So the next morning we head to a different area, right away we see a cow way off. We get up the mountain, thanks to the SS and around a corner we see two bulls standing there about 150 yards away! As we get set up, the bulls start pushing each other around on the road, I thought paddles might drop! Well, when the wife was ready (1 hour later, ok maby 1 minute, but waiting for an unexperienced hunter is painful!) a stupid cow came up on the road and blocked the shot! I was thinking at that moment, we are screwed because cows always seem to run off and take their men with them! Well, that’s what she did! We run up the road when they got out of sight and by the time we saw them they were up the hill and getting into some trees. Turns out there were 3 bulls with the cow, and she was the shooter bulls savior, that and my wife hasn’t spent a lot of time behind my gun….
We set up for a shot and the shooter bull turns broadside in a small opening, BOOM. The bull just stands there, the cow starts running and all the bulls follow, Josh got them to stop one more time but another clear miss! She was pretty bummed w herself, but I reminded her just how many animals I have missed when I started hunting. Josh confirmed there was no blood in the tracks. Saw a couple more cows that morning, did some hiking until I couldn’t feel my toes anymore, pain! That afternoon we went back and had a great lunch, reloaded my bullet carrier and took a quick nap! Josh decided on a different area for the late afternoon hunt, it’s tough to decide where to go when you have 40 different places in mind! But he picked well! We again are bombing around in the SS and got to an area w zero human sign, I’m telling you I absolutely felt this was the place we were gonna kill a bull. I kept that thought to myself though. Right around 3:30pm, we go around a corner and there is a good bull standing ABOVE the road (that always helps!) and he’s about 100 or less yards away, Josh says shooter!! We get out quickly and the wife gets set, much faster this time because she told me earlier she wanted to redeem herself, she did! She gets set and the bull starts to walk away in the semi tree covered hill side, Josh stops the bull w a cow moan, BOOM! The .300 win mag barked!! The bull takes a step back then walks about 10 feet and stops, we get ready for a second shot and he falls! Well, I’m glad he fell because the wife was in no shape for a second shot if needed, she managed to scope herself pretty darn good! Blood was poring out, Josh and I were trying to tend to her and keep an eye on the bull at the same time, it was pretty hectic for a minute. Once we knew the bull was dead, after some clean up and sturry strips applied, we walked up to her bull. A lot of bulls have a strong side and weaker side when it comes to paddles, I saw the weaker side first and was second guessing the kill, but as the other side showed itself, I was very happy! She was blown away, beyond happy. We drug the moose to the road, that deep snow came in handy!! Hugged, high fives, pics and then Josh got to work. It was the first time someone other than me took our animal apart, but that was part of the deal and I really didn’t mind at all. It only took about two hours to break it down and get it in the SS. Just as we were almost done, Josh says, “hey pull out your phone and look at those trail cam picks I sent you”. Sure enough, this was our bull he saw the day we got there and tried to go after, he went 2.5 miles over mountains and cliffs in less than 24 hours! Awesome day!! Couldn’t recommend Josh at Archery Outfitters enough, the kid (he’s 28) knows his stuff, he knows moose and where they like to go! Great guy. Well, sorry for the long story, there more to say but I know you guys want pics, lol. Thanks for following along, I feel like we did the tag justice, these OIL are something special, it’s too bad not everyone can have an opportunity like we have, truly blessed.

every year! Been on 6 moose hunts/kills in 4 years now, love it! I really wish everyone had the chance to pull a tag in our state, we have some great bulls .

That is so cool! Congrats to your wife! Sorry about the scoping but it does happen. Great bull, not sure two in the family in the same season is allowed but it too late! Thanks for taking us along. I have followed the thread since the beginning as a buddy had the same tag.

congratulation on a successful hunt, great Bull, Thanks for sharing.

Thanks again guys, appreciate it! One thing I forgot to mention about the bull, he had NO balls?? We were going to leave one ball attached to a hind but we didn’t find any on him??!! So strange, and we didn’t see major scarring either.
Now I have to find a good butcher that’s open on sundays?

If you’re looking for one close to home, I really like Linds Custom Meats. It’s a Kent address, but off of highway 18. Just make sure the carcass is super clean. They’re open today according to their webpage.

Thanks guys for the help, pm answered as well. My regular butcher called me back so I’m good to go now. I go to butcher boys in south hill.

Best hunt ever. You both are incredibly passionate about big game hunting and all that goes into it. Moose meat for days….. er years haha. I’ll bet Moose is on the menu for the holidays. We just hosted a big dinner part tonight,, shredded bbq bear meat appetizers on Sweet Potato Chips and deluxe moose burgers (backstraps are for Thanksgiving and Christmas!).
Way to go. Savor the memory.
