Title: 2022 Crab season announced
Post by: Flaming Antler Outdoors on June 16, 2022, 06:21:58 PM
So our crab season is again July 1. Looks like the same issues with area 13 and south area 12. North waters should be good again. Plan on slamming limits for the first 4 day in July. Pound for pound, outside of spot prawns is there any other seafood better? Please don't say halibut, lings beat that.

We'll be out.  The last 3 seasons will be hard to top.  And yes, there is nothing better out of our waters.

I've never been as I don't know anyone that goes crabbing.  Maybe someday I'll get an invite to learn the ropes. Good luck to you all and safe boating!

Nothing better than warm crab on the beach, best food I have ever eaten anywhere.

I am so looking forward to this.
Modified my Turkey fryer into a steamer.
Got new pvc perforated pipe swinging bait containers.
And my favorite new trick is my octopus trap   .

I'll be out Saturday, taking out a friend and his in-from-out-of-town dad.  We will be soaking pots in 8-2 and throwing in lines at the bubble while post soak.  I doubt we will get much in the way of fish, but some crab and a day on the water is still a pretty good day!

My marina neighbor got a 10 pounder out of the bubble on Sunday.  So there are some fish.

I think you are going to be able to walk across Area 8-2 on the red and white buoys this weekend.  I’ll probably give it a week to calm down.

I saw John got one recently too, so there's hope.

Oh yeah, it will be chaos.  I'm going into it knowing that, it's more about getting my buddy's dad out on the water.  Catching anything is just a nice bonus.

I’m doing an octopus hitchhiker rig to my crab pots.
I’ve never heard of this so I’m not sure it will work but it makes sense.

I found a proper looking vase at the flea market maybe a small gallon.
It’s necked down to 2-1/2 inches and goes back up.
I’m using a 4-5 foot lanyard with a SS bolt snap for a quick disconnect so I can add it just to the night time soak.

I might also do a Home Depot bucket with a dumbbell zip tied, perforate for drainage and put a 4-5 inch hole in the lid .

I’ll post up pics of the rigs probably on 7/3 hopefully it will be a success.

Dang, that's a good idea.

I have caught octo in shrimp pots when I was messsing around with custom pots and made the entrance too big - crabs and octopus got in there and ate the shrimp.  I ate the octo and the crab got lucky.

Do the crab just keep moving around looking for food or stay in a general area

I always find them in the same place, within 100 feet or so.  Too far off the mark and no crabs, few worth keeping anyway.

Tribal pots are still in the water this morning.  I don't remember their season going this late.

It was unbelievable how many pots and boats were fishing out of the Everett launch.  Somehow they got an agreement with the port to close half the launch for their exclusive use and were able to leave their gear wherever they wanted and boats tied up for days on any dock.

From what I have seen, there were many, many times more pots being used than I have ever seen previously.  Several big crab boats as well as the average home built stuff.  I don't know if they simply consolidated the fleet there for a normal season or if it marked a huge increase in their effort and catch.

I spent a lot of time with the fish and game guys about my octopus hitch hiker rig.
It took several call and they even asked if they could call me back after they discussed it in detail.
Their interpretation is that it is not legal.

I read that you can harvest as long as you are using your hands and not a frog gig, speargun or a knife.
The only way you can harvest octopus by puncturing it in any way is as a by-product from your fishing pole.
It does say that but there is more to it than than that.

You can only harvest octopus in a trap (pot)  as a by-product catch.
So if one is in your trap it is legal.
If you connect a vase or bucket via a rope it is not legal.
If you build a octopus cave and it is in your pot it is legal.
If the vase is part of your pot it is legal.

I apologize if I mislead anyone on this and if I did I am truly sorry.
I am glad I called Luke at the Olympia office.
Thanks.

Are you going to try the octopus cave?  I am very interested if that works and how.  Grilled octopus is one of my delicacies.

Post by: Mech on July 02, 2022, 06:36:41 PM
I am not going to try the cave thing.
It looks like a trap to me even though the guy said it was ok.
A field agent might have a different idea.
I do a lot of out of state stuff and having a notice to appear might be a pain.
I think I might freedive for one.
Tanks are to much of a hassle here.

Went out on the first, 2 limits  in 2 hours
Went out this morning, dropped the pots, on the way in
Water pump quit working (‘14 Honda 9.9)
Made it back to the dock in “ limp mode” barely
Pots are still out, I hope, found a ride from a neighbor for the morning
So bummed, first time I’ve  ever had an issue with my little crab boat
Plus I’ve got to find a parts kit and drop the lower unit
Unless any of y’all know some trick to fix it

easy fix, pull bolts but your lower unit wont drop out until you unscrew your shif linkage. There is likely a small window on the unit you can access it from the front (where the unit separates from the main case) then the lower will drop out. Small housing to access your impeller. Make sure housing is not warped due to heat. Easy install with a small pin that locks the rubber peller into place.  They all go out sometime or stop pumping well because its rubber and even when not running the blades sit semi bent. They all should be replaced every couple years. Normal maintanance.

We crabbed 8-1 and got 20 dungeness and kept 8 rocks that were over 6".  I typically toss the rocks back, but they were good sized.  Threw back about 50 of them.

Much easier limits today than last Friday.  1/4 the pots too.  Does anyone know if the tribes can crab today?  Had one large tribal boat flying through the no wake zone coming from the Everett marina in the river this morning.  Nearly swamped a couple small boats.  He had to be doing 25+.

Easier limits today, 7 keepers in one pot.  Area 8-2.  30 more keepers in the last 2 weeks.  Not near as many softs today as the previous 2 weeks.  Got curious today as we have been seeing some huge females.  Measured 3 today at 6.25" plus.  The 7 pot also had 37 crab in it, lots of large softs, had to have my wife help me hoist it out of the sea.  I'm thinking of some kind of mast to get the puller higher up off the side.
