I'm ordering a new CDS dial for my 7mm Rem Mag. I've always been a 200 yard zero guy, but I'm wondering is there a real pro/con to different zeros when using a dial system?
-
You can't dial less, so I go with 100. I don't see much advantage to 200 vs 100, maybe some at the extreme long end but I never get there anyway.
-
Depending on who does your cds, and how far out you hope to get. Mine was cut for single rotation with 200 yard zero and went to 650 yards (7mm), you can do other caps with stacked yardage, but it gets hard to read the smaller data on the cap. Go to Kenton Industries page and look at the options, me though, 200 yard zero.

Doing mine with Leupold. My previous one was 200. With my current load the difference between 100 and 200 is less than an inch so there really isn't a pro/con to either. My current CDS dial goes to 750 but I have no intention of ever actually shooting that far so I'll probably just roll with 200 since I'm comfortable with that.

so if that 750 range is not in your consideration, why even bother? zero at 200 and your only i would say like 7 inch drop at 500 (load dependent).. all in the kill spot on that flat shooter? why i have always done 200 zero.. no dial required for most shots you are taking on game, just high back hold at 500...

500 is closer to 36" of drop. I've never seen a 7mm Rem mag make 500 with 7" of drop. Thats the 300 yard number.

I like to start with 200 with or without a turret. A couple buddies with super flat rifles zero at 300 with out turrets

Yeah I'm comfortable shooting out to 500 yards. Beyond that I really have no intention of firing at a game animal unless it was a follow up shot on a wounded animal or something. However, it would be a hell of a lot of fun to dial it up to 650 or 700 and let her rip at some coyotes or wolves when hunting further east.

Like most people, most of my animals come well within normal ranges, 95% of my animals have been killed inside 100 yards, so I don't want a rifle that's zero'd at 300 an have to keep that in mind for closer range shots.
I think I've settled on 200, thanks for talking it out with me :chuckle:

Sounds like you got it figured out :chuckle: on my regular turret style rifles I zero at 100 and leave it set on 2.5 when I'm hunting. That keeps it inside +/-3 inches out to 300 before I have to dial. I like having the 100 yard zero confirmation available and it's probably not what the cool kids do but it's what I'm used to. On my cds I zero at 200 because I'm stuck with 1 revolution which is about 19 MOA... I don't need it for hunting but for banging steel or other opportunities like you mentioned, I like to have as much range as I can.
