Title: WHO SHOOTS GROUSE WITH A PISTOL?
Post by: Dave Workman on June 29, 2022, 07:52:12 AM
I've shown images before of me with dead grouse taken with a pistol. (See below) But I'm wondering if this is kind of a lost art.
My dad always packed a .22-caliber revolver, an old H&R 922 9-shot double-action and he potted the occasional bird while deer hunting. Probably how I got into the habit of packing a sidearm during deer season.

Who else on this forum (there's GOT TO BE more than one or two of us!) carries a .22 pistol or revolver for conking grouse? I even do it during grouse season when I've got a decent shot.

How about sharing photos of your gun and the birds?   And do you practice ahead of time to make sure you can hit a grouse?  My prep involves shooting at quart-size plastic milk jugs or the quart cartons. I also have a resealable target that is shaped like a bird.

I've done it.
I also use a 22 rifle sometimes.
But haven't used my 22 rifle or pistol in years.
I got an old browning, heritage rough rider, and a ruger wrangler.

But now I just let the kid have at them.
He uses a shotgun.
And when he isn't with me I just let them go for somebody eles.

Well, that's mighty sporting of you...I mean that seriously.  Maybe it's time to break out those .22s and do a bit of practicing!  Look for me this season. I'll be in the woods by the big tree. You know the place.

I carry a pistol on me many times and in the truck when I'm driving in the woods.  I have a Ruger Bearcat in a leather holster, seems like the perfect old school mountain pistol.  It's surprisingly accurate for a 10-15 yard shot.

Been packin a Colt Woodsman for 20 years, and like you, my dad had a Ruger and would take their heads off. What got me started was shooting one with my 270 and forgetting about the drop between the scope and barrel. Aimed for the head, and hit center mass, All I could find was a foot and some feathers!  :yike:

HAHA! Reminds me of the last day of modern general season about 15 years ago. No deer and I was on my way out with my dad. Saw a grouse at about 75 yards. Laid down with my .270 and put the crosshair at the top of its chest and blew its head off. Walked up to it with no head, meat completely untouched  :chuckle: :chuckle:   Good times.

I grew up shooting grouse with a .22LR, but in rifle form. Used a Remington Nylon 22, still have it! Might need to kill some rimfire birds this fall for kicks.

Have run those chaps for years.
Those and a long PVC duster are bullet proof in the saddle.

Personally I run a stainless, Ruger 22 revolver in my saddle bags.
In a true wilderness setting where the birds are dumb a stick, rocks, and some clucking always works.
It adds some serious redneck story base for those that have never done it!!
So funny how a little clucking and slow moving will mesmerize those dumb things.
When they wake up they are in the frying pan.

I tried for one last season with a Glock 26.  Half a mag later, I decided that I really didn’t need him.

I just picked up a PMR30 and gun fighter Kenai chest holster for this purpose.  I figure the .22wmr will serve as self defense against a cat or person, I plan to get those self defense pistol rounds Hornady and a couple other manufacturers make to try out.  I won't pack it in grizz country as a main weapon, but its so light I might just stack 10 rounds or so in the mag and pack it in the pack just for birds.

I lost way too many arrows shooting grouse and I don't need a 10mm in a lot of areas I hunt, so the PMR will tag along instead, and I won't loose arrows  :IBCOOL:

I do love coming back to camp with a bird or two in the pack and cook them up right there that evening.

I carry a sack to keep the pack clean and stuff them against my water bladder to cool a bit.

:EAT: I do, my first grouse was with a Win MDL 37 with #5's and a full choke at 20 feet or less it was a mess. Changed to an old pump .22 things got better. Today when hunting I carry a .22 conversion slide on one of my 1911"s

I use my grandfathers ruger mark 1. Still super accurate just a pita to clean. I prefer a .22 over a shotty for grouse as less meat damage. My kids love grouse nuggets and I love grouse pasta sauce. Saw a blue grouse with some pretty small chicks this last weekend. Had to keep my wife from snagging them and taking them home to raise with her chickens. :bdid:

We used to shot them with a 9 shot 22lr revolver that we have had for years but the last few years I bought a 410/45 barrel for my T/C Encore and use it almost everytime now.

Growing up in Minnesota, I was taught that it was sacrilegious to ground-swat a grouse, the same went for taking one from a tree. We only shot flushing birds and I thought everyone else did too. That was just how you were supposed to hunt. When I moved out to Montana for college and took my first grouse with a .22 I wasn't particularly proud of it, but it ate the same, and I realized that the .22 would put more meat in my freezer faster than my shotgun. I also realized that many of the things we think of as " hard and fast rules" of hunting are sometimes just aesthetic choices, or cultural norms in a particular area.

While I still prefer the aesthetics of grouse hunting with my dog and shotgun, I have come to love packing an old High Standard Supermatic .22 into the high country and head-shooting fat blue grouse up on those open ridgelines. I lean toward aiming high so the misses are clean, and if I empty my magazine or the grouse flies off, I count it same as a missed shot on a flushing bird.

As you probably know, grouse populations are cyclic, and my guess is that we've been in a down cycle for the past couple of years. We didn't have good hatch weather in May or early June, but maybe the birds can bring off a late hatch and start bringing things back up again.

GO GET 'EM!

I like most have shot them with a plethora of weapons including a .54 cal muzzleloader. I now a days either have my Encore with the 45/410 barrel (technically a pistol) or Browning Buckmark. Since I usually am going after grouse as a opportunity during deer or elk season I mainly use the Buckmark with a reddot and a suppressor so as not to scare off game for myself or others.

I do... keep a Ruger MKIII in the truck with a red dot and a full Volquartsen kit in the truck during hunting season... taken quite a few that way.

There are quieter was to kill them.😉

I use my 300 Win Mag. Either take the head off, or miss close enough to knock it silly.
The last one I shot (no grouse where I hunt in OKC) was in Washington in 2014. I was on my hike in and did not want to spook everything using my rifle.
I used my .40 cal XD, on about a 15-20 yard shot, and blew the head off. I do practice a lot. But I have no doubt that shot was about as lucky as I can get.

My problem is that I'm always in the situation of hunting out of a backpack for big game and either don't want to carry the extra weight of a .22 or am not comfortable making extra noise that could spook animals out of an area (or both).  An old timer I used to work with said he used to carry around a slingshot with balls of 6 shot wrapped up in tissue paper and that worked pretty well on stealth mode.  But haven't tried that out...

You could carry a suppressed .22 pistol for just such an occasion.

 Now THAT image is worth a thousand words about how "nobody uses a silencer for hunting!" Great shot, even though the photo isn't the best, taken with a flash at night, looks like.
But it DOES prove the value of a suppressor in the wilds. Good job!

Q: What kind of holster do you use with that pistol?

Our Ruger Sigle Six and Bearcat have killed a few.  Also used a Ruger Charger one year almost exclusively for grouse.

Had huge clutches early this year in our area.  The rain and cold killed most.  Couple weeks ago we saw a few grouse that only had one or two babies with them.  We have a great population of grouse in the area we hunt them....but we also try not to over harvest them and not a lot of hunters in that area.  I predict a pretty average year this year....nothing great, but there will be grouse to be had.

Two months ago I placed 2nd in an informal .22 target match among 15 friends. I shot a vintage High Standard Supermatic Citation that I had never shot before. I was extremely impressed with that pistol and I'm looking to buy one now.

I have no "hero shots" of me posing with a dead grouse, but I've carried a S&W Kit Gun for years and have taken a couple. I prefer a revolver because of it's ability to shoot a variety of different sized shells. I actually started carrying a .22 when I encountered coyotes trying to lure my setter into an ambush. I now carry the S&W 317 kit gun, extremely lightweight - you don't even know you have it on your belt or in your vest pocket.

1" @ 25 yards?

I don't have a picture, but I have my Ruger MkII (10" barrel) in the vehicle for when I see a grouse snack while I'm driving to/from a hunting spot. 10" barrel is crazy accurate, even in my aging hands...  Way more accurate than the eyes that are shooting it.

Ok, well....

1" @ 25 yards is WAY over optimistic after shooting this thing

I could barely keep a 4 inch group @ 15 yards  :(

I really wanted to take some pictures and brag, but I couldn't bring myself to get the phone out to snap pics  :chuckle:

My Ruger MKIV is the Target model with a bull barrel and it is remarkably accurate at 25 yards, provided I'm not quaking and shaking.  Off a sandbag rest, I can put 'em all within the proximity of a grouse noggin.

I can hit a bottle cap probably 7-8 times out of 10 at 15 yards.  Actually that was a couple years ago before progressive lenses...  At pistol distances, it's more accurate than I am.  I might take a body shot longer or if I could steady against a tree.

Yeah, my brother's gun is a MKII and he's pretty good with it. I have yet to see a MKII, or any Ruger . 22 auto with a target/bull barrel that isn't frighteningly accurate. They just have extremely good barrels in my experience, which is one of the reasons I bought the MKIV.

Do you have a holster for that 10-incher?

Understood completely.  I've always liked wheelguns, and the Single Six (I don't own one, dang it) is a gem, especially with the 6.5-inch bbl. What I'd really like is the convertible model and I would keep the .22 Mag cylinder installed.

Good hunting!

Nope, no holster.  I just have it in a pistol case that gets unlocked while I'm driving around the logging roads.  It'd be an interesting shoulder motion to draw a 10" barrel pistol from a holster.  Even Dirty Harry only used a 6.5" barrel, although the overall gun length may have been similar.

Yes, it just after legal time when I retrieved the rabbit and took the image. I didn't want to walk out from my blind during legal hours and possibly disturb a deer coming in...and get busted. Posting from Tapatalk gets me a nicely compressed image.  :chuckle: :IBCOOL:

The S&W Model 41 is an excellent pistol, IMHO. The older models even have a lot of character.  ;)
Today, they're a might pricey. I think the Ruger MKIV is about half the price and, as I said earlier, deadly accurate. I've never had a lick of trouble with mine, and I would certainly recommend one to anybody looking for a new shooter. Be sure to get a holster that fits, too. Ruger offers one from Triple K. I got mine when I field tested the pistol a few years ago for GUN WORLD (otherwise I would have built one, myself!).

ADDENDUM:  I added a second image...  IIRC that was taken as a "hero shot" for the magazine article on the same day, and about an hour before, I popped the bird pictured in the original post at the start of this thread. Been a while back.  ;)

I can hardly wait—tho I must along with everyone else—for that mid-September opener.

When I turned 40, my eyes started going and I started getting hungry during deer season. I put a 2x7 Swift scope on it and quit going hungry. A few years later while discussing some parts for the pistol with a guy in St. Louis Missouri (who purchased all of the parts stock Browning had for these pistols)  he said, he'd been using one of the 4 inch barreled Challengers with an Aim Point red dot in competitions for years and that set up was far better than the scope. I had to try it because, well why not. The time it took to find the bird in the scope was rediculous. Any self respecting Blue Grouse that sat in a tree that long, deserved to become dinner. After putting the Holosun red dot sight on, the gun became a true Grouse getter. It's so much faster to acquire your target that it's almost unfair to the Ruffed Grouse. I even carry it when I'm Grouse hunting with the dogs so I can shoot the Blues when they land in the big Ponderosas or Tamaraks and I don't want to pepper with a 6 shot 20 gauge. Now I just wish I could find a holster for it. Probably end up having to make one, one of these days.

HA!  This whole thread has inspired me to write my next online American Handgunner column about potting small game with pistols, and I have just GOT to quote part of this.

As for a holster.... contact me off-list .

Just out of curiosity...what ammunition works best for everybody?

Hollowpoints?

Round nose lead 40-grainers?

Plated?

Stingers?

I personally have tried just about everything there is, and either the round-nose lead or a plated hollowpoint has worked best for me over the years.

The pictured 10/22 below is the rifle I used in a GUN WORLD article several years ago on plinking, with which I shot wood kitchen matches at 25 yards off a sandbag rest. The scope is a Bushnell, and it is a dandy.

These are strange times, most of the ammo I have been shooting, vermin, not grouse have been 50+ year old whatever I can scrounge.  No misfires, normal accuracy

Modern ammunition if kept cool and dry can last a remarkably long time!

I think for price and ease of disassembly for cleaning, the Ruger MKIV is a very good possibility.
Don't overlook Browning's Buckmark models, either.

Both are, in my humble estimation, very accurate and reliable. Shop around, compare prices. Check out the websites of both companies for an idea about price. As noted earlier in this thread, I own a MKIV, and it is a delight.  (I'd probably say the same if I owned a Browning  ;) )

As far as ammo goes, my Model 41 loves Federal 40 gr. lead.  Shot a lot of metallic silhouettes with that stuff.
Here's a road grouse.

We all have our own interests, and I'd be fibbing if I said I didn't like to pot a bunny now and then. And let's be honest, some of the people in this forum have a very good camera eye, and they take some terrific photos, though I'd like to see more smiling faces with guns and game than just game and guns.

I think photos with happy humans sends a message that hunting is an enjoyable enterprise, productive, people have fun, and they like to succeed!

Like so:

My dad packed his .22 H&R 999 for small game until he gifted it to me when I was 16. I've been carrying it to do the same every since. I have a variety of .22 cal pistols but the nostalgia of his 999 and carrying on his legacy is more meaningful for me. Dad's long gone but the memories aren't. It's been so long now that I don't remember taking small game with anything other than his old revolver.
Thanks for the subject.

That was truly a great story about an often overlooked vintage revolver. My first handgun was an H&R 929, also a 9-shooter, also gifted to me by my dad. My compliments and congratulations, and sincere wishes for good hunting on the horizon.

And, you are welcome!  ;)

Dave Workman,
Thank you for the comments.
Your subject is one of those hunting traditions that will fade for me too quickly but hopefully, the kids and grands will have the same opportunities to carry the torch.

On a side note...
I'm very fond of my Mark IV as it's the most utilized firearm on my homestead. Also, that's a very fine contribution you made with your article in AHG.

Absolutely! Blue grouse actually winter up higher, eating needles when there's nothing else available.

I use my Contender with a .410 barrel more often than not, for grouse, rabbits, etc. It can be a little inconsistent, depending on shell length and load but, has worked well for me over the years. I have used a Mark IV in the past as well.

I use regular .22 round tip bullets.  Occasionally hollow points, but the round tip does less damage and dispatches them equally well in my experience.

From the start of october till now. I have only seen 1 grouse. Although I have not been targeting them I have gone through plenty of grousy areas while going for deer and elk. Numbers definetely seem a bit low in a lot of places. If targeting I am sure I can get on some birds. Just hasn't been the priority. But congrats to those finding the success.

But do love my 22 revolver when targeting grouse.

Shockingly I haven't seen a single grouse here in Oregon this year.  Which is so odd.  Even in my favorite grouse spots.

Too bad as I bought a CP33 and PMR30 this year to add to the rimfire arsenal.  Can only use rimfire or shotguns on grouse here.

Some nice pistol photos in this thread.

I was 1/1 last year. But thinking about upgrading to something I can put a red dot on after this weekend. I was like, 1/15.

That M6 scout rifle seems like a cool option too, crazy what they cost. And much heavier than a pistol.
