New to hunting Washington and looking to try deer season this year. I just scouted L.T. Murray over the 4th and it seems like great habitat for elk, deer, cougar, and bear. I saw 4 deer, 1 bear, and one coyote in a day and I didn't try that hard. I either stayed high to glass or was driving. The amount of elk sign all over the place was obscene. WDFW harvest reports make it seem like a bust. What's the story? Any insight would be helpful.

Lots of people and you can only shoot spike bulls on the general tag

Been hunting up there a few years and lots of pressure come modern season for elk. There are lots of animals but they move when the orange jackets come out. Spike only also. Good luck out there.

Do you just go for modern elk or modern deer too?

I think the elk migrate through the LT on the way to higher elevations and they do so across wet ground in the Spring and leave a lot of deep tracks in that wet ground. They reverse that migration through parts of the LT when snow pushes them out of the high elevations. Big variation in the number of elk seen from year to year.

There was a time, back in the day, a long time ago....... :dunno:

You'd be hard pressed to find a more crowded area for modern deer.
Look up the success rate on the wdfw website.
It is abysmal.
Sorry to pass bad news, but it's true.

Seen some huge bucks up in the LT........half mile away and during elk season. A few things to consider......one of our elk group went there one deer season at 4500 feet elevation......it was very dusty......it gets real cold at night.......and the LT is closed to outdoor fires April 15 to October 15.......and it can be closed past that date depending on fire conditions.......we were often sweating fire closures right up to elk season.

Camped near Gnat Flat for 20 plus years.
Camped there in 2003 and made the daily commute past Tamarack Springs. Group bought a wall tent in 2004 and moved up higher.
