Title: Cell cams stealing hunting spots.
Post by: hunter399 on July 22, 2022, 12:13:34 PM
Just thought I'd bring it up.
I was looking at settings file on my old cell cam that I no longer use with service anymore.
Moultrie -verzion one.
Anyway in the list of settings ,there was GPS coordinates for longitude/Latitude.

Since anybody that works for moultrie can look at your account and or pictures.
And the cam is sending GPS Location.
Not a big deal for most people.
But if you have a monster, giant, biggin buck on there.
Are you gonna have a bunch of non-resident hunters there now.
I Had to put the card in my lab top to open the settings file.
Can't do it on phone.
Seen the GPS stuff.
I was trying to set time and date on cam without the service

It basically like you doing all the work, gas, attracting, setup, paying them for service ,then they can access your pics and location..

I'm not sad one bit after seeing that today ,that I cancelled the service this winter.

And for those that go steep and deep with those cell cams ,your spot is no secrect.
Anything that connects to cell service these days have a GPS location device.

I doubt they have the time, to access everybody's pictures.
.
Unless you post them....
.
So just don't post them, or edit first.
.
Main reason I went with cell cam was the gps enabled part.
.
But you probably won't see any of my pictures that I get without first making a copy without coordinates.

True that.
I run all my pics to change file name,to a smaller copy to post. And they are regular trail cam pics.
But I'm super paranoid type.

Oh and if you have a true giant, you know record breaker .
Somebody already knows. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

And like my cell cam had that recognition stuff on it too.
That will basically tell you if it's a buck ,with phone notification.
That makes it a lot easier for someone to to check your pics ,now that I think about it.

 :yeah:
Especially in Washington.
No "secret" spots left.
.
I hike miles behind gates, only to run into other hunters that came in a different gate.
.
Actually have found it productive to hunt closer to the trailhead and watch the parade of "further" go right on by..
.
Amazing how many hunters go right past animals that are just off the road because they are in a hurry to get somewhere.

You are so right.
I agree totally.
Sometimes there right under your nose .

I am fairly convinced after 50 some years of hunting in Wa that there are no actual ‘secret’ spots, maybe less used, but not secret. Particularly on public lands.
And on public lands there is no ‘my hunting spot’, and even then, if I set up and later see there was a camp set up 100’ away on the other side of trees that I did not know was there, depending on your attitude, I may or may not move.
I have dry camped in places where people showed up and said “We have set up camp here for the last 20 years”.
So? Public lands. Did not see the ‘exception’ rule stating “This area is staked out by ‘Joe Blow’ for use during hunting season, and you should not be here. Or even the next mountain over as this is MY spot.”
A good location to set up camp is where everyone will gravitate to. A friend that collects arrow heads and Tribal pottery explained that is EXACTLY how he locates where to look. ‘Best camping spot’, and start looking.
Sorry, but public lands are public lands.
You want to keep people out? Go lease or buy property.
This is a sore spot for me, obviously.
Too many people claiming public lands as ‘theirs’.
Tech and more people in the woods has made it worse, or better/easier depending on your take on it.

Oh ya ....
All I hunt is public land for the most part.
Got people on cams and I'm ok with that.
HUNT that spot ,I'm ok with that.
With me or without me doesn't matter.

I'm just trying to address that maybe these cell cam companys are cherry picking everybodys "Good public land spots".
By checking your pictures.
And location to boot.

Yes all public land ,pre scouting over hundreds of cell cams users is a pretty big advantage.

But you don't worry about onx staff?

What a great way for computer nerd hunters to steal spots, wish I'd have thunk of it

ok I made the mistake of posting some photos from my phone years ago on Facebook. I was NOT smarter than my phone and did not realize the location was imbedded and easily retrieved by others. It was some really nice animals we had taken. It bit me in the arse- not my friends but the pictures once circulated were seen by lots of people I don't know. Next few years I had a bunch of new hunters in those areas. Lesson learned and I was the technology disabled idiot. I have spypoint cell cams now. I was concerned about imbedded locations but have not seen anything like that. Not to hijack the thread but if I post or text a spypoint trail cam pic is the location imbedded? and easily retrieved by anybody? I am so sick of this survelleince world I guess we live in. The technology is great but I think they should disclose in a big way anytime they are saving location on any device.  :bash:

Having back door access to onX, allowing access to all accounts has really help me with scouting.

We did a whole big thread on this,  I down loaded meta data apps and tried like hell to get that info off pics (part of the experiment in the thread, not people's pics) and the consensus was that Facebook peels all the metadata off of pictures and puts in a bunch of their own crap that no one can read.

I really do not think your spot was taken from a picture posted on FB by reading the metadate embedded within the picture.

this reads like a schitzo post hahaha. im obviously new so insult me all you want, but this thread is a big reason why new people don't want to hunt. it is gatekept to no end. you should want people to have a good time and get an animal so they keep hunting and keep the hobby alive. the more hunters there are the more of a chance of the government listening. ive gotten good information about things, mostly related to equipment or whatever newbie question I have, but none when it comes to where to go. I mean, I get it, you want to have a successful hunt and get that meat and trophy but so do others. so do new people. its frustrating as a newbie. just my two cents, you may proceed to talk *censored* about me.

No way man,I would never put down a new hunter.
Spend as much time as you can out in the woods hunting.
You never know what might walk right into your lap.

Think about when the automobile came out and got popular. I imaging while some were tickled to have and easier way to transport game, the hardcore horsemen were probably talking crap about the car users as well. Or affordable optics, either scope or binoculars. Or how about when smokeless powder came along? Or when bullet technology got better? Go back even further when it was just bow and arrow hunting and guns came along?
I do kind of equate this to why the regs have limits on aircraft use for scouting and hunting on the same day. You KNOW there are people using drones to scout, legal or not. No real difference between that and a 'live' game camera that sends you an instant picture. Put enough out and you would know the intercept point and about how long you have to finish your cup of coffee before heading out to harvest the critter. They very well may need to set up some regs for game cams in the near future. That some will still ignore. Just like the others that some people ignore now.
