short version of the story...
I’ve been shed hunting a lot this year and dropping in to see if the bears were out. Sign was pretty scarce but I knew it was time for them to pop out and feed. The onions are thick and you can smell them in the air. I talked my wife into letting me head to the hills Friday evening with the promise that I’d be back that night so she could come along on Saturday. I arrived at about 5pm on Friday and started to glass from a few key vantage points. I hadn’t seen a single bear and all of the elk and deer I was seeing seemed at ease until almost dark. I hiked out to one last point before dark and soon saw a huge black blob. A quick look through the scope and I confirmed it was what I was after, a huge jet black boar. Well after 3 shots the bear was gone. I had left my rangefinder in the truck because I was mainly just going to glass across a canyon and didn’t plan on getting a shot. He ended up being a little farther than I thought. The next morning I was headed back up at 3am without my wife (couldn’t find a dogsitter) to look for signs of a hit but found nothing but tracks. I shot low!! I walked out to a point where I knew there was a pretty good onion patch to take a look and do some glassing. I slowly came up over the edge and here was a big bear, tearing up the onions about 40 yards from me. He looked my way as I already had my scope on him. I could tell he was a good bear but I couldn’t tell how good. I decided to take him and with one shot through his lungs he busted for cover on vertical hillside. I could hear him dying and decided to walk up the hill and call a buddy. Luckily he was heading up to the hills and offered to give me a hand. Well after several hours we were able to get the bear to the truck. He should stretch to about 7 feet long and I’m not an expert on weight but I’d say 400+. I would have loved to have the big black boar but I’m plenty happy with this one. He had a previous injury to his lower jaw so he has a severe over bite and only one big tooth that sits right in the center of his jaw. Definitely a unique bear.
Thanks for all the comments.

I actually did almost the exact same thing a few years ago. Popped out on a bear at the edge of a wheatfield diggning for gophers. No rangefinder, guessed him as a decent bear at about 300 yds. I am signted 2 inches high at 100 yds, so I held dead-on his shoulder and touched off a round. Bear took off.
When I got over there, his track was HUGE. He was so big it had coused me to misjudge the range. :bash: When I paced it off, it was over 450 yards. I never have been that great at judging ranger anyway. Now I never go anywhere without the RF...

i am positive i have been in that onion patch before
