Title: 2022 Dove Season
Post by: digger13 on August 17, 2022, 07:51:26 AM
Any comments from Tri Cities area on birds?

Looking at weather forecasts, heat should stick around through the 9/1 open

Appreciate any updates!

Lots of birds north of town. Lots.
Let’s hope it stays warm.

Small temperature dip this weekend, I hope it's insignificant

Hearing birds are thick, let' keep them hemmed in for another week!

Temps should not be bad, seems it needs to get below 50° for a few nights to send them off. Looking forward to this opener. I haven't been out for a few years now. Good luck, have fun!

LIGHT 'EM UP!

Doves are impossible to hit. I've proven that many times!

 :bash: :yeah:

GOOD LUCK...TAKE PHOTOS....SHARE THEM!

Anyone have experience Dove hunting over a dog? I know some of the best hunting is with decoy in an open field and awaiting them almost like duck but was wondering if a pointer breed could be used effectively? If not just for the retrieving aspect.

Dove only perch up high (trees, power lines, etc.) or they land on open ground where they will see you, or your dog, coming and flush before you are in range.  They don’t hide in the grass so a pointing dog isn’t going to be much help.  Dogs are great for retrieving dove, but not for pointing.

We always brought the dogs on dove hunts with no issues. As long as they can heal and sit still you'll be fine.  Been years since I've gone though. Thinking about going out tomorrow if I can think up a spot. All my old haunts are houses now.

Don't know if it affected our hunt but the only time a dog was with us (a friend wanted to see if he would retrieve) we never saw any doves that day. Don't know if it was because of the dog or not since the conditions seemed good.

I bring my dog with me dove hunting to retrieve downed birds.  They wouldn't be effective trying to point them as they typically sit in trees, power lines, etc.  I typically always shoot them on the wing.

We managed 17 doves and 9 pigeons. The pigeons saved our morning hunt. The doves did not want to cooperate. The evening hunt went much better. I still managed to shoot 3 boxes of shells. Good opener!

Only managed 2x this morning. But no decoy setup. Just walking around field edges mostly doing dog work with my GSP. He did retrieve a bird which I was thrilled about.
