Title: Help! Atv broke down in the woods
Post by: johnbmyersii on August 19, 2022, 10:15:18 AM
Wondering if I can get some help: I have a 2016 polaris sportsman 570 and it broke down in the woods last night. All of a sudden it lost power, wouldn't RPM, sputtered backfired and died. Would hardly restart and would die after going into gear. No check engine light either. Today I checked the intake sensors and none look dirty, has fuel to the injector and the injector is clean, next step check spark plug.

Today it starts and drives but sputters and backfires bad. Will RPM but does so slowly. Feels like it's an ignition problem but hopefully someone here can give some advice.

For clarification are you needing assistance in recovering the ATV, or are you wanting diagnostic advice?

If the former, please provide a general location.

Good luck!

Fouled spark plugs possibly.  Very similar thing happened to my Yamaha Grizzly several years ago.  Put in new plugs and everything ran fine.

Thaks for the replies. I was able to get it towed out first thing this morning from a buddy. Spark plug came back and looked good. Checked spark and it had it. Thinking it's the fuel pump not pumping enough.

Electronic Ign or fuel pump would be my est.  Fuel vacuum bad gas cap?  Will it start with gas cap off?  We had similar problems with both pump and ign module on older atvs before.  Spark plug problems were usually not revving high but not stalls.  Good luck.  Also dont trust "look" of plugs.  Can be bad still.

If so equipped, could be a fuel pressure regulator.

Does it have an external fuel filter? I had a crack in one on riding mower once that acted like that

i dont remember what it is called, the power module or something like that. its basically a circuit board that controls the power, my step dad used his in Moab. all worked fine, took it home and no power.  maybe this isn't your problem due to being able to turn it over, but there was a range of Polaris quads that this is a major and common issue, and its not a cheap fix

Backfiring and sputtering indicates it's running too lean and not getting enough fuel.  I second all the advice given about checking components involved with providing fuel to the cylinder.

+1 for the Yamahas! I’m assuming your polaris is fuel injected? My father has a 2016 570 Ranger. He had to have the entire computer replaced. Dealer quoted him $2700. I have a buddy in lower PO county who did it for cost of parts basically.  My 2000 Big Bear 400 has never had a single issue. Good luck.

That is exactly backwards. Spark, air, fuel.

Had a 570 burn up 3 fuel pumps. Sounds like similar symptoms to what I experienced.
