I use to be option A when I was younger. Moving down to B now

Thats kinda my dilemma.   I'm not sure I am healthy enough for A.  I've also lost a little bit of the push since Dad passed also.

C.
If the hunt is fun and camp is fun, I am good. Zero trophy desires for me. Hell, give me a doe tag every year and I would be happy.

I've killed some good stuff over the years. Now it's mostly about the experience. I like seeing animals. Trophy is in the pursuit for me ..

Due to age, B. My mind wants to do A, but not gonna happen. C happens often as well.

I like to kill and eat deer.  :chuckle:  Also very much enjoy the whole hunting experience, scout, cams, camp, etc.      C  it is.

I think my body just kicked me down to C with no backup.  Going to pray for a comeback.

Still want the meat, but no longer willing to go the extra everything for it.  "C" is for meat.

B for sure for the next few years then probably C, A is not in the cards after 50 for a lot of guys in my opinion. Had a very smart doctor tell the crowd at a lecture, "guys the day you turn 50 sell your ladders!" He would see more guys over 50 in the ER with falls from a ladder, well because we still think we are 30 :)

For me it depends on the hunt.
Blacktail in Washington or Alaska is A for sure It is (my) hunt. I prepare physically all year for it. Killing a mature blacktail or even getting a opportunity at one is a amazing experience.
My Idaho whitetail is a B love the camp and time with family and helping the younger kids get experience in all things outdoors.

Good choices - Option A - “ likelihood of a monarch”
Makes it so much more considering than the typical “possibility of a monarch”

Why?

You got me at "beautiful."  That's all that I need.

THat was the plan.   I'm nursing a groin injury so the idea of crawling over logs backpacking in has me balking.

I would say if A is any kind of option that’s what I would do, though it may be brutal there will come a day when it’s definitely not an option.

I like to think a or b but honestly I enjoy the experience and the people I'm with more than antlers. I like eating wild game and enjoying my time with friends. C is the plan but it has morphed into B a handful of times and I wasn't upset.

Ah man I'm sorry to hear that. I pulled a groin so bad once hard just to bend to sit down etc. If you can nurse that back to health I say you go big. Based on forum observation, it appears to have been many years since you got out with the long bow. But any hunt is a good hunt and any deer is good deer. Best of luck if you get out!

I was gonna say B but when I take people with me they call me crazy and usually never come back. Option A it is!

Until I can’t, A.  Don’t care at all for deer meat, so not killing anything but huge is ok w me. The challenge is where it’s at for me, doing a real tough archery elk hunt in 2 weeks, I’ll see where I stand at 53.

Well Mister Doug, ‘twas I, I’d use this hunt for good. Take up your bow, or maybe even that old rifle you got from your Pa.  But go into the hills and be with the Lord and His creation that He’s given to us. Think about your Pa and while you’re hiking and watching, and know he’s there with you using his eyes just as before.  Maybe you won’t find a monster. Maybe you won’t fill a tag. But you’ll be ok and you’ll feel better.

Sometimes when I get to thinking and remembering too hard, I end up straying from the hunt, and just ramble about the bush or the hills, not so much looking for animals, but just existing in a four legged environment full of bears, moose and wolves , trying to make it back to camp so that I may sit and rest and ruminate on what I’ve seen and the thoughts and people I remembered.

When I was young, I've been on "Hunt A's" and the word miserable is key.  So miserable the fun was knocked right out of me.  Dumb enough to do it twice.  Struck out both times.

"Hunt B's" have been fun and I would do it again.  At age 54 I'd be a little slower and also not throw as much caution to the wind.

But now, with our little elk camp growing with more family coming in to the camp and I've killed what I view as "trophies" over the years.  I'm just happy to meander in to the woods and hike with a rifle in to some of my favorite haunts.  We will have our grandkids in camp this year for the first time.  So while the age 20 and 30 somethings pound the mountain... I'll be at camp with the wife teaching the grandkids the woods, woodsmanship and the ways of elk hunting. "Hunt C" all the way for me.  :)

B-/C+ for me.  At 59, the day after a long hike or pack out is brutal.  And I just don't seem to have the drive I once had.  My buddy back east hasn't been able to hunt for sometime due to health issues and my 90 year old dad is probably done now.

Always, every year it starts out as an A but now looking down the barrel of 70 I’ll get a couple miles in and say to myself “ hey, I know a good little spot right over there, think I’ll just plop down next to that stump”😆 seems to be working out ok so far😆. Yep, always starts out as an A but usually disintegrates into a C and with each passing year the disintegration happens faster 😆👍

B.
I could notch up to an A with the right opportunity. Tough to want that in Washington.  Lots and lots of effort with very few opportunities for reward from a deer standpoint. I really like the mountains, but I think I'm a hiker and a fisherman in the mountains anymore.

I'm "B" during the early season when I'm filling the freezer.

Happy to transition to A after that.

Back in NH, I was an A, compared to most hunters back home. When I moved out here, I realized that I was a B level. The As were weightlifting year round and running up mountains. Lately, more of a C. I'll put 5 miles on the boots a day or I might hunt in the morning and keep watch for elk from camp in the afternoon with a cigar and even pick a few shrooms. I'll be collecting my first SS check this month. I don't push it over the top.

I start with A if that fails I go to plan b and then possibly c. I am starting kind of with A this year not an overly tough area to hunt but going for one specific bull for archery. The hunt area is not real tough physically but the bull is tough to hunt and the area is super thick.

Used to love A and B. Now that im older and disabled it has to be C. Heart and mind want to still do A and B . Though im just thankful if i get anything, antlers or not. As long as its legal and i can put it to plate, im happy. It's just par for the course. Young people love to carry heavy packs and be adventurous and the older you get the less you can do, so you have to settle for what you still can do. It may not be as glamorous as going deep into the woods and telling a great deer story, but as long as your still in the game, thats all that matters.

I'm A when I can. Most of my hunts are with my father. Because of that I end up more B and C. I really enjoy a good grind which opens up more options for him. If he shoots a buck 5 miles from the truck it would all come out on my back. I cherish every chance I get to hunt with him but know they are limited because he is now 67. So I will squeeze in an A every chance I get but will never give up a B or C with the oldman.

I came close to B hunts a few times. I have been blessed to hunt in C areas for a lot of my life. Now, when I need C hunts the most, due to age, most of my C hunts have gone away due to elders passing and farms getting chopped up or sold. I have been blessed to fill a lot of tags, and be along with a lot of close friends and family when they have filled tags. C is they way I'd go.

Boneaddict, you’re having a tough year but my advice is keep your foot on the gas and go hard for A this year.

I’m trying to put myself in your shoes and I think that probably wouldn’t be what I want, but it might be what I need.

I pulled the plug on round one.  I have no business going where I go with a groin injury. Hell even in top shape I usually come out looking like near death or almost wishing for it (figuratively).  Even my B hunt is pretty darn tough.   I have a couple day window coming up I might give it a second look.   I'll have to change up my gear a little (couple pounds) but I'm ready to go as soon as "I am ready to go".    We shall see.

I like the challenge of the tough hunts, and really want to tag out on a Monarch, but I also really enjoy the hunt as I have gotten older.  I'm split between A and B.

Find a big buck in a B or C area!   :chuckle:

That’s always my goal.   Heading out to an A area on Saturday for a couple weeks.   I do like A rifle areas that open in Sept!!!

Option C.  I like to think that after my youngest is grown and off on his own that I'll go to option B or maybe even A.  (Let's be honest, I'm 50 now... option A will not be an option by the time Little Pathfinder is grown... :chuckle: )

... but then it occurred to me that by the time that happens... I'll probably have grandkids out in the field, right...?

...back to Option C again...
