It’s the opener and I can’t leave until tonight. Let’s see those lucky opener bucks!
-
Just sticky'd this thread. It's the official 2022 deer thread.
-
I'll be out the next 5 days. Good luck to all ya!
-
Opener on the Palouse. Got out this morning before work and have nothing to show for it but some seeds in my socks and a furrowed brow. Onward and Upward. I ended up closing the gap on a shooter to 120 yards but the deer fed off so I bagged it and went into work. Good to be the first one on em! Some pics for your viewing pleasure if you're stuck at the office. Get some!
-
got lazy and left the blind in the car. 20 minutes into it Im busted at 40 yards and the stare down began. Seemed like forever but only last a minute probably. Fun, but I wish I would have just brought the blind.

You got more self control than I do, if I was out and seeing deer I don’t think I’d be able to drag myself into work 😂

That's beautiful, how'd you get access? I had late Palouse last year and it was tough finding spots to hunt.

I think we need a better pic of that buck, some of those antlers got cut off. Looks to be a dandy!!!

Whidbey Island doe taken Aug 1st on a second deer tag.

Yes it is in my neck of the woods. Just got back from checking 3 cams that have been soaking for 3+ weeks. Grand total of 327 videos (normally these 3 cams have 900-1000 each, cards full, batteries dead) got 2 dinker 3x's and a few does. :bash:
-
Great buck!!! Seen a few big bucks but there are a lot of ways not to fill that tag with a bow. Numbers of deer in the Palouse seem way down compared to last year...especially whitetail.

Keep a hitting it hard!!! The bucks will come!! I’m not a bow Hunter but muzzleloader and rifle will be here before ya know it!!! And yes, I’m sure the heat don’t help at all. Pack a fork and knife with ya because ya might have to eat that deer right were ya dropped him!!!

I was happy to see the quality of antler growth. Seems like the wet spring was very good for their antlers size.

I felt like I saw good antler growth as well. Didn't seal the deal but saw quite a few bucks that would have been my personal best, not that that's a high mark :chuckle:

I've been out a few times since the opener. I'm primarly hunting Spokane/Cheney and south. I'm seeing very few whitetails, go figure they all died last summer. I'm seeing quite a few muley's and most bucks have pretty decent antler growth. I haven't had any opportunities yet but have got the heart pumping once or twice. To all the farmers on here: Please don't cut the lentil field I'm hunting until I kill Mr. Big!! ;)

133 & 136 has ALOT of big fork muleys. Haven't seen a single shooter all year though.

Been on 7 bucks so far, only 3 of them legal and all 3 were 3pter's.....Passed all 3 tho....

Backyard Buck.

Congrats. Always wanted to tie one up so he’d be there for me opening day :chuckle:
-
I got on a buck the weekend of the opener (JPmiller) knows the one I'm talking about. I had my brother push him to me and was so close but he turned around instead of stepping forward for the shot. It was a lot of fun and sort of happy I didn't tag out as I have the MS tag and can keep the fun going. Best of luck to everyone and dang this thread is a little bare for this time of the season.

Only cause I didn't shoot him earlier! Good luck going forward, I don't think I have the schedule to get back over so don't try to save him for.me!

Nothing here yet. Hot weather and smoke seems to have combined to hunker them down. Had "the one" headed into my blind opening day, but ran out of daylight when he was still 150 yards off. He's gone mostly nocturnal since then. Saw him headed over a ridge Saturday morning, but that's been it.
-
I am hoping some cooler weather gets them on their feet.
-
Personally I’m seeing very low deer numbers in my area. Zero deer activity at my home and around me. Been running cams on 2 properties (3 cams over salt) not a single deer pic to show for it since July. Lost a lot of deer last year

Been a strange year at my place. Usually, I'm seeing deer in the yard almost every day this time of year. I have not seen a single deer in 6 weeks or better. And we generally would have seen at least a half dozen different fawns too. I have seen 1 and only once back in July.

My guess is you have a Cougar around.
-
Multi season deer tag is punched.
New to archery, and got the opportunity last night to shoot this buck, long story short I got buck fever and rushed things and learned a lot.
Archery is not rifle hunting, haha and you can’t treat them the same way. Beyond blessed and thankful we found him and were able to process him before the meat spoiled.
But with that here’s my 2022 archery blacktail. 35 yards, and a first archery animal.

Where are you at in Maple Valley? Last week I saw a Gamie pulled over on the side of Issaquah Hobart road. He was walking and just then I saw a very large cougar dead on the side of the road. Looked pretty darn fresh too. And it was BIG. This was just past the hwy 18 overpass, right by the Taylor forest parking lot.

Thanks JP! It was a weird encounter. He busted me and I wanted to leave as I realized I was in his core area. I tried to leave and got stuck in a place where I didn't want to double back and scare him off. I had to hunker down for about 15 minutes, then tried to leave, and then he got curious.
I think he thought I was another deer. He heard me, and came looking. I moved with him until there was a shot window and I took it. It really appeared to me that he forgot about me and then assumed my sounds were another deer. It was like he was looking for his buddy but found me instead. After the shot I said "I can't believe that just happened" and realized I stole that quote from an episode of Steve Rinella with that guy Clay.

NW of the HY 18 Maple Valley exit maybe a mile or so. 3-4 miles west of that location.

Nice bucks, all! Good to see all the first time successes.

My contribution for 22. My first buck with 5ish points on one side (not counting eyeguards :chuckle:) Would of had 6 if he had not busted one off. Cool buck with some character works for me every time.
PS amazing how far they can travel with an arrow thru their heart, about 300 yards straight down into the steep. >:(

Great buck....and yes, when they have a head of steam and a downhill runway....they can cover some ground. I had a similar experience and it sucked packing that bugger out. Double lunged with blood spraying out both sides of the animal.....literally painting the forest red. 200-300 yards later it died and rolled another 100 before landing in at the bottom. 3 hours later we hat it quartered and packed back to the truck.......almost wasn't worth it. :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
This one the arrow entered perfect right behind the front shoulder, through the heart and then embedded into the opposite front leg breaking it. I watch the arrow get thrown out within 20 feet and then we followed literally 10 drops of blood mostly his bounding tracks till we found him piled up.

Just like you said
perfect!
Probably would’ve been done with the first one but I’m in the same camp if they’re still moving they deserve a second one. I’ve seen too many dead animals get up and walk off
-
Yeah, at first he was just moving his head a bit but eventually got some movement back in his legs and wiggled down slope a bit. Saved 143 grains of weight on the packout to put another one in him too!

Classic spine hit with that first shot. I’d have sent one more as well

Nice shot nock nock.

Holy cow Pickard that's insane could see the vapor trail of the bullets too (if I am correct about that). Thanks for sharing!
-
Finally made the switch from rifle and muzzie to archery for muleys and it paid off first outing. 200 yard stalk took 2 hours to get close enough in open country for a shot. 70 yard double lung brought him down after he made it about 50 yards. Tons of fat on the rump...great eating and rewarding hunt!

I saw him come out of the woods the night before and was near where he came out thirty minutes before light the next day. When the sun came up him and 6 other bucks were about 600 yards off in the field, 1.5 hours later they came out of the field coming straight towards me and passed at about 25 yards. He was the 4th buck in the line.

Filled my second deer tag Saturday morning at 8:00. I first spotted her bedded about 500 yards away and snuck into 80 yards. One shot with a clean pass-through. She went about 10 yards.

Muzzy season has been an absolute grind this year hunting every day and putting in some serious miles only finding elk, more elk, elk, and does. With no multiseason this year when I came across this little freak I decided he’d do. Never shot a weirdo like this before. Geeze - what an old cuss that top buck is. He's got to be 9 plus years old. Tons of mass and bases that the hunter can't quite wrap his fingers around. Killer! Where was that hi hunt? Olympics? Your buck was no slouch either. Congrats on your success.

Congrats my friend she is quite the huntress!!!!

Congrats indeed
-
My daughter had a youth doe permit and made a great 185 yard shot on this blacktail doe yesterday at 7:30 in the morning. First picture is right after the shot, deer was at the edge of the timber. Rifle is a Savage Axis in 7mm-08 shooting 120 grain Barnes ttsx bullets at only 2,750 fps. I've got them loaded light for less recoil since my daughter isn't a real big kid. But being a little slow doesn't seem to have any effect on its performance. The deer dropped in its tracks and never twitched. It was really nice being only three miles from home, especially with the price of gas!
-
Awesome

Love seeing the young lady's get it done! Congrats to them and the Dads.

Forgot to post this during muzzy season. My oldest has filled tags mainly with her bow but wanted to try muzzy this year. She has now shot bucks with her bow, rifle and now muzzy. Stone cold killer just like her mother.

Happy to see all these buck photos. I'm near Colville and have seen a few does but no bucks. Haven't had even a spike on camera for 2 weeks now. Hoping the cooler weather will help.

Managed to find it this little guy today.

Carolina Whitetail.
Ok I know it was a bad shot with the bow. But I was patient enough and made the right decisions for the recovery. I learned. But I also got it done.
Shot it when I should have been a bit more patient. It bedded 15 yards from my stand for a bit and then at dark it went uphill. I found it there about 100 yards from where I hit it.
I got one more pass starting in November.
-
These blacktails are GORGEOUS and keeps me motivated to keep putting in the miles!

Took my son out all over for past week on Friday he sealed the deal after many hard lessons and many attempts he never gave up

Very true and was real challenge for him as some will think it wasn’t I’m sure it took a lot of patients and time he put in all summer watching and learning
-
Awesome miller ! That boy will be smiling for a long time as I’m sure you will be , great job
-
Oh yeah, well my son killed his first buck this weekend too. Glad to know that he doesn't have to see Millerwheeler's kid's buck - I"m not going to show him that pic. (gorgeous buck)
110 yds, perfect shot, smallest anters I"ve ever seen on a 1.5 year old buck. I think he'd have a green score of 3 +/- (A good cull if you ask me.) He tagged the buck around the ankle since there was nothing else to hang it on. He passed on this guy a week ago, but yesterday he was locked in from the moment he saw it. I just watched as he waited for the perfect shot and then smoked him like he'd been doing it for years.
-
Sweet ! I think my first was about the same ! Good shooting and good going !

A little Idaho buck that I shot because my 3 yr old told me I should. I’m thinking after the success I’ve had this year with my kids in tow my 8 yr old is going to come along on my November cow elk hunt. I have another deer tag and I’ve taken the last 5 days of season to hopefully fill it with a better one

I waited out the first half of general season due to the heat and had low expectations this weekend with the eastside still so darn dry. Picked a spot about 2000' higher into the mountains than where our camp has typically hunted for the last decade, and spiked out Friday night. After a 6 am creek crossing and nearly 2 miles of hiking and glassing up a promising ridgeline, I picked out this buck following does through burnt timber across the head of a big basin, and watched as he bedded and disappeared in deadfall. Was grateful to find him in the same spot over an hour later after a long stalk around the backside of the ridge.
I'm grateful for a game plan that paid off, my brother who helped pack him out through tough sidehilling and bushwhacking, and the stories and sustenance he'll provide over the year ahead. And especially the rugged corner of Washington where we crossed paths.

Hunted a week ago when it was 77 degrees and dry. Didn't bother the next two days and wasn't coming back until a week later when temps were to drop by 20 degrees.
Worked a four-day trip, the last day getting up at 5:30am for a Reno - Phoenix- Puerto Vallarta - Phoenix day. Waited a few hours then commuted home late that night, not getting in until after 1:30am.
Normally I'd say I'm sleeping in and hunt the next day, but that night the area I hunt got some rain, which I knew would be snow up at elevation, so after getting home I got my stuff together, gassed up the 4Runner, and drove the 90 minutes to my area. Ended up getting about one hour of sleep while parked, and headed up the trail 2 hours and 20 minutes prior to sunrise.
Cold and windy with a light dusting of snow, my hands were freezing with the windchill while glassing. Felt like the wind was going right through my gloves. Moved around for better vantage points a few times and found a few dozen deer, but due to the distance, light/shade/shadows, and brush I couldn't tell what most were even with 10x Swaros. Some I figured were bucks due to body size, being solo, or with one other deer.
Watched one herd with what looked to be the same small forkie from last week and decided to get a closer look, while also getting closer to many of the others. As I was moving so were they, and I really wasn't closing distance. Also was going fairly slowly not to spook others in sight.
Focused on one that was originally 750, and now 635, was a decent forkie. With the other suspected bucks being much farther away I decided I'm taking this one since I only have two more days before starting another trip and would rather be done and hang out with my dog. Got to 510 and set up, terrain didn't allow me to get closer. Don't particularly like long range shots, especially with wind, on game, but have been shooting one gallon water jugs at 400 and 500, and felt confident.
I always wear ear pro so it's more of a thump instead of a loud bang that has my ears ringing for two days. Scope dialed, bipod is steady, he's still... THUMP!.... smack! Lost sight at the shot but heard the smack. Got the scope back on him, but he's not there. Look through the Swaros, can't find anything moving. Gather my stuff, hike about 15 minutes, dropped and rolled over where he stood. I'd show you what a recovered 145 LRX looks like, but I've never recovered one.
Nearly 13 hours after starting I was at the bottom.
-
My 8 yr old and 11yr old got it done with their 6mm Arcs. Ar's make the best kids guns imho.

Here is my 2022 buck. First buck in the timber and first buck I've killed 100% on my own. I was within 100 yards of him for almost 2 hours. He had 2 smaller bucks with him and one bedded down in front of me at 30 yards. Shot this guy in his bed at 60 yards. I find it ironic that I spent all this time getting my gun ready to shoot 500 yards.

:yeah: It's funny that so many guys get into the long distance shooting when it seems like most shots I've gotten on deer, rifle or archery, are all within archery range. My longest shot on a buck was my first, 215 yards and I had a good rest. It's a testament to a hunters prowess to get as close as possible, IMO. If you really want a challenge go open sights with a lever action .30 30. My bro has killed a few whitetail with one, it's always a quick shoot! Way to kill your first solo buck and a dandy at that!

Excellent job. I had plans to hunt timber for blacktail this year, but I ended up back in the tried and true clear cut that likes to produce. I hear you on the long range practice. I left for my Idaho hunt this year feeling very confident out to 500 yards. I killed my spike at 60 in the thick timber. The blacktail I killed was maybe 80. Practicing long range is not a bad thing though, the patience and focus needed to shoot well at 500 makes you an excellent shooter at 100.

Congrats to everyone on their deer this year! Some freaking dandys in here.
-
Congrats on the deer everyone!!
I'll post no matter the size, as every blacktail hunt is one I treasure. While I'd liked to have taken an older animal, I still learned a lot from this year's hunt. I've never been successful at finding bucks in the early season but had more encounters this year after changing my style up a bit. Shot this little one in a spot I've never hunted much, as it's hard to get to, but this hunt proved I could. I was able to take a perfect shot at a mere 50 yards as he was quartering away. It was one heck of a pack out on the bike! I'll be back to this spot with cameras in a week or so to scout for next season! ;)

Got this beefy forkie on the 24th. Made for one heck of a story. He made it into the river before he died and as dark set it I was watching him drift down the river in the mist, dead floating on his side. Was such a horrible feeling. Huge thanks to a few folks that live on the river. One gal saw me waded out into the river and hollered to ask if I needed help. I told her what happened and she sent her husband out to get the boat. While waiting for him another guy on the other side of the river had his boat pulled up to his property and offered to help. He picked me up and we started running downriver. Not long and we ran into a boat coming up. I ask "ya'll see a deer floating down?" They respond, "we got him." It was the husband and I think the son, of the gal I talked to. They went down after the deer first. No one asked for anything, and I was beyond overwhelmed with gratitude. We switched the deer into the boat I was in. He dropped me off where I had been so I could go back to my rig and gave me his number and address for me to come grab the buck from the boat at his house. Then drove it up into the woods to gut it. Was a heck of a night. I have been beyond grateful.
Big thanks out to those that helped. I never got names or anything for the guys in the boat that picked up my deer. If this story rings a bell for anyone let me know.
The hunt was nothing spectacular. Jumped him at 10 feet around 2:30pm. Circled around the area a bunch. Then just started still hunting around some trails. Found him bedded at 50 yards. Shot, he kicked around on the ground for a bit then got up and ran off. Tracked blood for a few hundred yards. Good blood then just drops, then good blood, etc. Found him and put another in him. Then he ran into the river. Turns out I was way high on the first shot. about 1 inch above spine through the top of the backbone. Second shot was double lung.
3rd biggest bodied deer to date. 130 lbs meat and bones.
15th deer in 14 years (including a second doe tag)

Nice buck brother. Great job tracking that buck.. You've run up a hell of a success record for 14 years hunting.
-
Here is my 2022 buck.
It’s better to have skill and not need it than look at a buck out of range on the next ridge, with no realistic way to close the distance. The time will eventually come to put that skill-set to use and you may be rewarded handsomely.

pete112288 I hope there is a couple jugs of fine whiskey headed to a couple folks. Nice to see there are still good people out there.

"Can't believe she's already 12" Well you better start preparing yourself now for when she goes off to college because that was one of the worst weeks of my life when mine did.

I'm way not prepared for that :chuckle:
It's a 280ai. 22" hells canyon armory light contour carbon barrel on a trued rem 700 action. Mesa precision altitude stock. Bolt fluted by LRI, SRS 4 port self timing brake, trigger tech special trigger and topped with a NF nxs. Lobbing some 168 vld's at 2,950. Her first big girl rifle.

Breaking a string of giants, but super-proud of my dad for getting it done on this little forky buck.
Dad and I have been learning to hunt together for the last six years or so. We both shot bucks on private land in Idaho a few years back, but haven't had success in WA, or public land.
Went out last Friday AM in some bitter cold (7 degrees at the truck), to glass a hill where I had seen deer moving a lot the preceeding days. However, the movement on this day was nuts! Almost right of the bat we had a buck chasing below us, too quick for a shot, but we thought we knew where he was. We saw this little guy chase across the hillside, same story. Decided to make a move on that buck, and just before I headed out, spotted a real nice mature buck for just a second on the same hill.
The plan was for me to walk around the backside of the hill, and either get a shot on one of those, or chase them back over the hill where Dad might have a shot. I got into the timber where we thought they were bedded, grunted, and one came right to me, but blew before I could even get my gun up. I moved up the hill, when dad radioed that he had a buck in his sights, but no shot. He was going to try to talk me in to where I could see it, but then the buck moved and was in position for dad to shoot. I stayed put, heard one shot, then another.
On the radio, dad wasn't sure what happened. He talked me over to where he had last seen the buck. On the way there, I stumbled upon the scene in the picture. Buck down!
I know he's not the biggest, but dad made a great shot (400+ yards) on his own, and filled a WA tag for the first time at 73 years old. Couldn't be happier for him and for being there with him!
-
Great story and good for your dad

I got one of the leftover multi season tags so was able to hunt late buck. Been getting this guy on my trail cam for over a month. Was able to call him in, in the evening time within 20 yards of my tree stand using grunt call.

WA late archery. Watched him breed a doe. Snuck within 30 yards and put an ironwill broadhead through both lungs and the top of his heart. Surprised I was able to sneak so close to him and his does with the snow on the ground.

Last hour of the last day, went ahead and took a doe. Had three different bucks I was holding out for and passed on some smaller bucks, but decided to put some meat in the freezer. Idaho WT doe.

As she lays.

I will keep it short to not derail the deer thread, I will try to get some stories in its own thread. All were awesome hunts.
Out of state muley, 13 yard shot buck down in sight. Backcountry ambush hunt and good weather.
Wa. BT rifle. Love me some bt. Had a multi tag, this buck was working an area hard general season but hanging in the thick. Had a couple other opportunities at other bucks, but couldnt put it together. Late buck this guy slipped up, and 60 yard shot as he came down a road.
Oregon BT. Spotted him in a snow flurry, and he was on a ridge that also happend to be a closed road. My biggest bt to date. 60 yard shot buck down in sight.
All the bucks road a backpack back to the rig.
I Feel very blessed this season, tons more details but thats the basics

No, just showed last week after we got 16” of snow. Figured he pushed off the mountain. Only 1 I was shooting I had on camera and he has barely been around. Think he moved with all the snow and I was hunting the fringe of where he was.

I am new at this forum, graduated from Entiat High School in 1985. I have hunted there most of my life. With 15 points got drawn for late archery Entiat unit. A 50 yard shot , one hour and 15 minutes into opening day I filled my tag. I have missed bigger deer over the years but this is my biggest deer to date.

Had a muley doe tag this season. One shot from the 30-30 at 170 yards did the job. Excellent meat! :) I needed an easy hunt this year because of a leg injury. Wasn't up for any hard hiking.
