Here it goes, good luck to all of you elk hunters this year. Big bulls, raghorns, spikes and cows, let's see em.

Good luck to you all...shoot straight.

It was tough out there today, west side is hot and covered in smoke. Add that with a full moon, and having timber lands closed, and before mentioned fires. The pressure was insane. At 4am when we showed up to our spot, which only had 3 trucks total last year including mine, already had 6 trucks. And when we came out at 12 or 1ish there were 3 other trucks and people
On e bikes riding behind the gate.
At least where we were at it was a dang s show of people
Bugling and I’m the elk all pushed back into timber land. Hopefully we see some success later in the evening

I got a bull down this morning. Roosie. 10 cars at the gate and I intercepted an escape route. 30 yards. Legal 3 point haha. I’ll post pics as soon as I get to my laptop… can’t do it from my phone for some reason.

Alright! My first time posting the first pic of the thread! Smoked this cow yesterday at 50 yds. Made a perfect shot. She ran 20 yds and fell over. :IBCOOL:

Chased a bull all day and lost him when the herd fed into this cut. Never hunted archery before so figured I’d better take a cow feeding at 60. She only went about 15 yards before tipping over.

Way to fill the freezer, both of you

Nice job ThurstonCoKid!

I got a nice doe at 35 yards 1 hour into deer season. Then, got this cow at 20 yards, an hour into elk season. I feel truly blessed to have a freezer full of meat. I used a meat pack and game bags I bought off of forum members. :) It made packing out that elk by myself a much easier ordeal! But, hunting is already over for the year... too soon, haha. I'll try mushroom hunting this year, so something to look forward to this fall.
Good luck everybody!

My first elk after starting bow hunting 7 years ago. Walked back towards my car at the end of a long day hunting and was thinking my day was done. Found this bull with his harem of cows 50 yards from my car. He stood still just staring at me while broadside. Double lunged him and he ran 60 yards up a hill before stopping and rolling backwards to his final resting place.
Wish I could say that I spot and stalked him and then drew him into my shooting lane with elk calls. For me, my successes have always been completely unplanned and unexpected.

With time running out on the oregon season it was looking like we were going to be eating our tags...on our last day to hunt a miracle happened and we doubled up. My dad picked off a spike out of the herd and amongst the chaos we were then able to coax the herd bull into twenty yards and with a few challenging bugles. Easily my biggest Rosie ever...
Moral of the story, never give up! It can all change in a second
(Phone died after the spike photo so no pics of the big bull in the field :bash:)

I tagged out on my Washington State muzzy bull elk special permit yesterday. I missed a bigger 6x6 opening morning at 147 yards and had another very close encounter Tuesday morning. We camped up in the wilderness for the first few days and hiked like I’ve never hiked before, after some of my hunting party had to take off, My brother Chad and I decided to check out a different area of the unit that an archery tag permit holder told me about. Walking up the trail In super stealth mode, Chad started making some soft cow calls as we walked. We stopped to take a breather and heard a branch snap. We look up the trail 60 yards and my bull steps out. Doesn’t see us or even look our way. He crosses the trail and we lose sight. Chad says “it’s a bull and I think he’s a good 5” I start sneaking up to rest on a tree and the bull turns around and steps back out onto the trail!
Chad does a quick cow call to stop him. I put my open sights right behind the shoulder and pull the trigger. With the smoke it’s hard to see, but immediately felt like it was a good hit. We walk up to where the elk was and find pink frothy blood. It was a double lung hit. We start tracking blood for about 70 yards to the edge of a VERY steep and deep canyon. We are terrified that he went down to the bottom. We look down the trail that runs along the top of a cliff and I spot him. There he laid. He didn’t go down the canyon.
My brother and I celebrate. I feel like my dad was with me at that point. I feel it come over me. I could feel him there with us. Chad and I spent the next 6 hours packing him back to the truck.
He wasn’t the ”mounter” I was after on day one of the hunt, but I feel like I put in a ton of hard work on this hunt and am very happy with how it turned out. It’s exactly how my dad would have written it up.
I had some amazing people help me more than they know. This was a hard hunt for me, but with their encouragement and willingness to share knowledge, I always had hope.
Thank you to Chad, Jason, Brady, Jerry Cella Ross Sharp Tom Johnson Scott Frick

I really tried to make it happen with the muzzleloader this last weekend and relocated 4 times to find a spot with good elk sign but unfortunately couldn't make it happen in WA. Here's my CO bull I shot a few weeks ago though, first bull with my bow and the elk were screaming! I shot him at 22 yards broadside in the lungs and the arrow deflected off a rib and exited at the opposite hip. After waiting 30 minutes we started tracking him and found him still on his feet but wobbly. We have him another 90 minutes and found him 120 yards from where I shot him. 295# of boned out meat for 3 miles in the rain made for a great end to the hunt!

Here's my 2022 Muzzleloader Quality elk. I had a total of 20 points going in to the draw. I went in with a DIY/Public Land attitude and I was able to finally connect on the 7th of 9 days. Up until this point I was averaging 10-12 miles on foot per day. Shot was 106 yds, with a 290gr Barnes TEZ, 100grains BV of Blackhorn209 through a CVA Optima V2. On another post a gentleman said Muzzleloading elk is the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. He was dead on with that! (I Blurred the faces of those that I did not ask to post their pictures)
Rough# 350", 60" left main beam, Right side is bladed and not broken.

Sucks you lost the cat, but only good cat is a dead cat. Hopefully knowing you are responsible for saving dozens of ungulates per year will put your mind at ease by not being able to find the cat.

Shot my first ever elk at first light. There was a small group of 4 and after I checked for any bulls I singled out a cow with a good quartering angle and it went DRT. What really shocked me was the full pass through on a quartering away shot with a 308 150gr fusion at 300 yards. I've had the exact same round not pass through deer at half the distance. The exit wasn't all blown out either, just barely made it through the hide in the off-side shoulder. I'm thrilled to have all this meat!

Thank you! have been in WA since late 90's hunted elk in "any" areas initially until they changed rules several years back. This prompted me to focus on actually working for elk, cows were easy and i am more a meat hunter than trophy (though i wont pass on a stud for sure). Have focused on bulls in public lands, have not hunted private or pay to play areas (including paper) and have harvested branch bulls in 2012, 14,15,16,17,18 and back on board this season. I feel blessed to actually run into these encounters but i do put boots to ground and walk my butt off. Enough time in the areas and you know where to run and gun from history. I know my average is high compared to most but i really feel that lots of luck is involved, though year after year some may say otherwise...

Only takes a little luck when you know an area, where to go and find elk and are working hard to get it done in and out of season. Congrats and I attribute it to more skill and work than luck.

My Montana bull. Only 16 bulls killed in the entire unit in 2021 and all by residents. Needle in a haystack

Im pretty late on this one but hey it’s still 2022! It was tough out there in the elk woods this year for me, not many encounters or bugles heard, but I found one that wanted to play the game on my 7th or 8th day hunting  Hanging an Idaho resident tag felt pretty good!

Gorgeous! Nice work! Story?
got lucky, first day of my first Elk hunt covered some ground in the morning without seeing any elk but plenty of sign. Then on the late afternoon walk we came up on this guy feeding at about 40-50 yards. First shot made him go stiff and drop, then as i approached he got up and took a few steps before laying down with very labored breathing. He ended up standing back up, taking a few steps so I hit him again. This time he laid back down but kept his head up, we decided to back out as to not push him. After much debate we decided to come back early AM the next morning (didnt want to push him and it was 20F that evening). Well he was only a few yards from where we had left him but unfortunately coyotes had found him that night. Lost a good amount of meat from the hind quarters but I was just happy to notch that first Elk tag. End of the day I had an awesome experience and now have a freezer full of meat.

Glad you got an elk. Maybe there's more to the story, but from what you said the animal was very close with it's head up but mortally wounded. It doesn't sound like it was going anywhere. I would urge you to finish the job next time and tend to the carcass accordingly. Sounds like the animal possibly suffered a slow and painful death and was possibly scavenged on by birds and coyotes while still alive. Also, the meat would have been much better if you had done so. :twocents:

Awesome first elk! Congrats!

Great bull, amazing first elk, tough way for him to go though. Since you've got orange on I assume rifle season? No reason not to keep shooting until the animal is expired. Get it over for them ASAP. Lesson learned though.

Was able to fill a late cow tag. Kind of torn on shooting a cow this time of year but the herd in this area is beyond healthy. Terrible photo I know.

Actually a 2023 central Oregon elk, taken with a depredation tag. Pleased with the shot, 405 yards through the heart with my 30-06 Remington 700. Ammo was handloaded 178 grain Hornady ELD-X at 2790 fps via Ramshot Hunter. Smashed her leg/elbow before penetrating the heart. Didn't recover the bullet. Have only cooked one tenderloin so far, and my goodness it was excellent! :) Glad I had two strong and much younger guys with me for the pack out! We boned her out on the spot, put the meat in our packs and hiked about a mile to the road.

Awesome shot and some tasty meat. Congrats

Forgot to post this. My first elk, 2022 in Montana. One of the coldest hunts I've done with highs in the mid to low teens and lows into the negatives at night.

So you have killed 6 bulls in 11 years, if your counting from 2012. Your not 6-9 your 6-11. Just going off your years you listed. :dunno:
