I need some help getting geared up for hunting around my new home: Salmon, ID.
Blacktails and rosies are all I’ve ever hunted or cared about until now. I’m pretty much clueless on what guys are wearing. I have hot weather gear and rain gear (obviously) but the cold weather gear is foreign to me. I see Kuiu has a sale going on right now and they are my preferred brand as far as fit goes. Not opposed to other brands either. What would you guys wear?

I wear Timberline pants and long johns underneath when it's really cold. For tops, it's merino long sleeve year round then Jetstream jacket. I add a light puffy (REI) underneath if it's too cold for the Jetstream or a huge puffy (discontinued Sitka Kelvin down windstopper) over if it's really cold, like zero or below or I am not moving for some reason. I want to add puffy over pants for glassing but haven't budgeted them in yet.
My late hunting is snow and rarely, if ever rain so that's what I plan for.
It seems the brands have similar stuff, base layer, outer layer and insulating layer(s) on top and then rain layer if needed.
Idaho or Montana seem easier to dress for than constant 35-40 degree rain.

pretty hard to answer this as it could be 60+ or single digits. Rain gear is always packed, I check weather and decide what that week is going to bring.

Every year when we go to Idaho it seems like it always drops to single digit temps at least one of our hunting days. I got a mtn hardware ghost whisperer down puffy to wear under my Sitka outerwear and over my merino baselayer. Merino bottoms and Sitka mountain pants, or rain gear if it's raining. You don't want to do too much physical activity with your down puffy on as you'll sweat like crazy even if it's cold, but glassing or riding atv's, they're $ well spent.

Ok. It looks like mid weight down jacket is on the list so far.

First, wear what you have, there is no need spending a ton of money on clothes. When I go to Idaho in November I love to have real wool pants, thick ones, along with my baselayer it will keep me warm in any temp as long as I am not sitting for a long time. For my top it is just about layers, and wool is king when it comes to keeping you warm. Often it will be 12F in the morning but I will be in a t-shirt by afternoon if I am hiking. I wouldn't worry about it too much, just get out there with what you have and buy different stuff as you get uncomfortable.

I’ll put in a second for wool. Back in the 90s I had a pair of German wool army pants that I wore for year. And years. I wore them hunting & fishing in late fall & winter & I also wore them to work every day all winter framing houses. I’d buy a pair now if I could find some.
