Title: Gunsmith Recommendation
Post by: bigdub257 on September 16, 2022, 11:52:04 AM
Looking for a gunsmith to remove some stuck scope base screws.  I've tried everything to include soaking with Kroil, heat etc.and the are stuck!  Bent my torx screw driver and stripped one screw head.  I'm thinking they need to be drilled and removed with an extractor and hesitate to do this myself.  I live in Gig Harbor, but sure I'll have to travel north or south to get this done.  Any recommendations?

I got in touch with Brett and he is going to get me fixed up.  Talked to him for quite a while.  Great guy and very knowledgeable.

Thanks for the referral!

I did that exact thing with my wife’s rifle. It’s the first and last time I drilled and removed them. It worked like a charm, but I was nervous as hell doing it.

If you have an automatic center punch take an old tip and grind the point flat and to fit bottom out in the Torx socket and then spray it with PB Blaster or Kroil and let it marinate over night.  Then, if you have a can of compressed air turn it upside down and spray the base with dry ice to contract it and then give the screws a couple snaps with your automatic center punch to crack them free and they may come right out.  Have you already heated it?  Just in case someone used lock tight when they mounted the bases.

I came up with tis on my own and it seems to work when all else has failed and much more successfully than any other protocol.

If he hasn’t retired, yet, Ed Lapour in Bremerton is very good and reasonably priced.
