I came across this boot print last Saturday while checking out the area in the Bumping unit where my friends and family have hunted the modern firearm elk season for almost two decades.
Approximately size 10.5. Newer Vibram tread.
If you're the one that came off the ridgeline and flagged a stream crossing with orange tape near a small log jam, poked around a bit and then headed back up, I'd like to have a conversation with you...and perhaps an offer.
Thanks.

Is it private property?

Is it private property?
Nope. Wilderness area.

You know public land hunting is getting crowded when…..

You know public land hunting is getting crowded when…..
Honestly that’s down the line with what I was thinking when I saw this post.
How much to stay out of your hunting area? $1000 and you have a deal :chuckle:
-
Kind of why I asked. I know there got to be quite a problem above CleElum (among other area's) with people setting up 'permanent' camps year around, even though they were not in them. It was getting pretty heated at times.
"We have been in this spot for 20 years."
Well, still public.
-
True, of course. Just trying to keep someone's hope balloon from getting popped.
I tracked him around and it was pretty clear he was new to the area and bound to mess things up, like the dumb*donkey smoker did a couple years back that's lucky he still has teeth.
That said, if a guy is willing to put in that kind of work, I'd rather he team up with me/us than [bleep] it up for everyone.
-
He can't be scrwing to much up if you were cutting his tracks. In that logic you both might need to rethink your routes :chuckle:
-

Except...Your premise is illogical. ;)
It's easy to cut someone's track if they are wandering around all over the place aimlessly.
There's a right way to access the area, scout it, and hunt it. And then there's the Family Circus approach... :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :bdid:
-
Wow.
-
Wow is right!
-
Holy smokes.
Wow is an understatement.
-
Let me know when you see a size 12 ,250lb on the heel.
You'll know I just found your spot.
-
Maybe the man who laid that track knows exactly what he is doing. More than one way to skin a cat. Pretty tough to get in the mind of a man you’ve never met. Could be he’s new to the area, could be he knows something you don’t.
-
Only one way to hunt an area? See how that works with a wind change.
-
Can I ask what you plan to say to this person?
-
If you are concerned others will mess up your hunt just turn the tables and ensure you mess up their hunt. Maybe they won’t come back again next year.
-
Well this is an amusing post. :cue:
-
Can I ask what you plan to say to this person?
It's pretty straightforward really, but I'll put this question to you: Would you rather operate from a position of having more information, or less? Would you risk your time and treasure and a lot of sweat equity if you knew it would be wasted? I doubt it.
Personally, I prefer to operate from a position of knowing as much information as possible. If I found out that a group of guys have been hunting an area for years - and their close family and friends and their offspring will likely be doing it until the [bleeping] anti-hunters eventually strip away our hunting privileges in this state, I'd look elsewhere and not waste my time, or I'd hunt alternate seasons, or figure out how to join forces.
I've said this before elsewhere, but it evidently bears repeating. If a guy looks at a map and thinks that just because it's remote, it doesn't mean that he is first person to ever contemplate going there, set foot there, or hunt there. In fact, the exact opposite is likely true. And, by the other side of the exact same coin, if a group of guys have been hunting a place for almost two decades, it's rational to think that others might want to give it a shot. Heck, I was one of those guys before the old-timers finally had to give it up. And, I've bumped into some hard core dudes that have become my hunting partners.
After all, we live in a state with 7.6 million people. Crossing paths in the backcountry is bound to happen.
If it's not your boot print...it's not your problem.
If it's your boot print, and you'd like to learn more about the situation, it would be rational for you to reach out and have a mutually beneficial and cordial conversation.
-

If I get your post correctly, and I think I do, you want to find the owner of that boot track and give him two choices: Join us or leave us because if you don't join us, you're screwing up our personal public land that we've hunted for generations. Is that about right?
-
We have an elk spot that we have hunted for years. We have been pretty successful over the years. It is a fairly small area and in our experience, there is really only one way to hunt it....that's how we learned it, messed it up multiple times while learning it. Anyhow...years go by and we have success. During this time we have encountered multiple hunters that approach the area the way we did...messing it up. We always did our best to touch base with said hunters and advise them of the area and how to hunt it. We had one guy put up a trail camera (40 yards off the road) and trail we used to walk in. One day, we met the guy and talked to him about his stand. He stated he had seen elk there all summer long but not now......we shared our experience and he abandoned the stand. Elk weren't their during the rut and his stand was useless.....well except for the bear that pooped in his pile of apples. :chuckle: :chuckle:
Long story short.....I kind of understand where Bushcraft is coming from. Some area's can be messed up if entered / hunted the wrong way. We never tried to push people out, but rather tried to work with them and educate them to that specific area. It was public ground and there was plenty of room for everyone.....as long as you didn't enter through the elks bedroom and push them into the steep dark hole half mile away. Once there, they were not coming out for a minimum 3 days. I see no harm in trying to find out who may be hunting an area you also hunt and sharing experiences.

My preference is that he not screw it up at all.
There are thoughtful and decent ways to approach things when it comes to sharing public spaces, whether those are sidewalks, roads, parks, camp grounds, boat ramps, wilderness areas, etc.
And, conversely, there are utterly moronic ways to approach things, like voting for Democrats if you are a gun-owner or a hunter, for example. ;)

This. Exactly. I'm glad someone gets it. Thank you.

So far, you have a boot print. The trespasser may not have seen anything of interest and may not come back. I know of an occasionally productive spot in the LT Murray......one of my hunting buddies would sit on this one roost for the entire hunt. Occasionally, if he didn't get to it early enough someone else would be on it. He'd just quietly swear to himself and move off.......then return in an hour or so, usually finding it unoccupied. No discussions, no claiming ownership.......it's public land.
-
:yeah:
-
I haven’t seen anyone claim ownership of public land on this post. Did I miss something?? :dunno: :dunno:
-
Doesn't the public land belong to all of us?
Just asking for a friend.

I’m seriously asking where anyone claimed otherwise? I have not seen it in this thread…..asking for a friend.

You wouldn't be appreciative if someone gave you intel that you otherwise did not have....Like, when you approach from the south on this ridge...you are walking through the bedding area. Approach from the North or East and the herd will walk by you if you are patient enough? I suppose being new to an area and knowing all there is to know about an area makes you a better hunter than the guy(s) that have hunted it for many years prior to your showing up.
Maybe I am misreading the OP's post, but that is what happened in our instance and most hunters were very appreciative. Hell one hunter, a young guy actually got to sling an arrow in the following days (he missed) but he was super excited he got that intel.

Lol, it sounds like you should read up on what public land hunting means and good sportsmanship. I have a favorite hunting area and I see new people and pickers every year or two. Do I have a talk with them? Sure and it ends with "knock one down and I'll help you get it out", or "I know where some great porcinis are." Just because generations have hunted the same spot doesn't mean you should have any expectation at all for someone else to not 'screw it up.' When you see someone else hunting, you just walk the other way.
-
Me personally
If it was presented halfway decently
Id love some local info
Big fan of working an area smartly with others
Ive also had many encounters with maroons who think they own the place

Roughly the same odds of narrowing it down that this thread has of narrowing it down.

It’s public land. That’s all we need now. People posting no trespassing on public land because they think they’re the only ones entitled to hunt it.

This is the most ridiculous post of the year if not top 10 . Seriously almighty know it all there is more than 1 way too skin a cat and for a fact there is also some luck in hunting many people show up
To a place walk aimlessly and ate successful, some like me work all long for success at the given moment , relax dude I hope the dude tell you too kick rocks , public land is public land we all have had crazy ideas and stumbled upon people , or a crazy weather change moved animals , many many things but get over your self mr one way

I always ike it when the "Ive been hunting this area for 30 years!" people come to my area. They come around durring hunting season, and maybe the week before, and think they know the area well. But it changes every year, I live and work here. This year it went, "Man, Ive never seen it so dry here, havent even seena doe yet, its getting worse every year." But living here, I see deer all the time, even the big bucks.
But with that said, I'd guess IF this guy was new to the area, and who really knows, he'd probably like to know information about the area, but in my expereince, it ussually goes the other way. Haven't come across to many folks who were willing to give up their honey hole lol.
If you ever find yourself where I live and hunt, I'd be glad to share what I know.
Happy Hunting!

I made that boot print
maybe not that particular one, but I've been those boot prints in a lot of new areas these last few years.
I get into areas that people have been hunting for generations, years, and I step all up in it.
I've had those guys come up to me that "own" that knob, drainage whatever. "join us, or leave us" so the conversation invariably goes, "what is your plan?" and each and every time they'd send us on a wild goose chase (or bird dog for them)
The last guys in Idaho we talked too wanted to send us to a ridge that had a whole big group from California camping right on it, they'd cut trails in with saws and were in there morning and evening, bugling to beat the band, omg non-stop on the trumpet.
They had long since blown everything out of that ridge, yet kept hunting it. We knew this because we'd already checked it out before the Idaho guys told us to go there "huge bull hangs on the top, cows go down over the sides mornings and evening and have 3 or 4 rags with em"
Ya,
We did think it was hella funny they'd send a couple Washington guys to hunt with the Californians :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
at least they didn't slash our tires I guess
Maybe you're more magnanimous then those Idaho guys, and would give the guy who made that boot track the best hunt in "your" area...but if I were that guy and got approached by you, ya no. There's not a fat chance that I would gamble on your generosity
I do your hunt your way
-
Gotta remember it's coming from the same guy who told the forum to not bother buying any goat raffle tickets few years back because somebody had dumped a ton in on it and they wouldn't even have a chance anyways.........ended up being him and funniest thing of all he didn't even draw. Karma
I sure wish that was my vibram track.

At the risk of being redundant...this Jrebel guy gets it.
Also...at no point did I ever claim it as my own. In fact, I inferred the exact opposite by pointing out that it was in a wilderness area (i.e., public), which doesn't automatically absolve people of using common sense and/or adhering to common decency.

That’s pretty chicken scat, dismissing his points by taking snarky shots at his typing. Dude, get over yourself. You’ve been making snarky post and going on and on for years about how hardcore you are and how you are some sort of mountain guru and in general how you’re heads and shoulders above everyone else. I sure hope when you walk around in reality , you don’t talk to people in your condescending manner. Rude.

You bumped into some boot tracks that were bumping around in the bumping so you want to bump into the guy so he doesnt bump the elk out of the bumping, and said bumped boot track guy in the bumping is/may be lucky you don;t bump his teeth out in the bumping. And NO I have not took a bump off the bottle this AM! :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Only one way to hunt an area? See how that works with a wind change.
Exactly what I was thinking. What happens when the thermal switches and camp stinks up the drainage.
Public land is just that. It’s all of ours. Free to do on it whatever we would like within the confines of the laws of man and the laws of nature. Drive a super loud truck through every open road after shooting light I don’t care, I’ve already ninja’d into the crap you won’t go into ready to pounce on a fleeing animal bumped by other careless hunters.
Or maybe I’ll bump an animal to you. Last Saturday evening hunt I was heading back to the truck as light was waning. My wind was blowing into a thick patch of baby pines, prime bedding for deer and elk. I knew a whitetail buck was in the area because I had put the crosshairs on him the night before just couldn’t see a third point. Not five minutes after I walked upwind of that bedding I heard a shot. I started feeling bad like I’d hunted it poorly but then I switched it around and felt happy for the other hunter. We just never know when our folly is going to be another’s opportunity. Thanks for reading! Good luck this season!

Thanks.
I started thinking about this one way, but changed up, and now believe he really does want to make sure 'that guy' does not waltz through the area and screw up everyones hunt.
I have done the same in a few different area's in EWa. I am about 75% they ignore the advice and 'do their own thing', which is their right, but it certainly can mess up everyones hunt. Noisy people are the worst.
I have had folks do the same with me over the years, and unless I know the area and they are sending me on a 'wild chase', I will work with them.
-
:yeah:
I'm not an arsehole, I hear em out, it's just been my experience they want to send me on a wild goose chase, or they want me to bird dog for them. Or preferably, they talk me out of hunting there all together
"Might as well go elsewhere, we've been hunting this for (insert random years) and know what we're doing so it's going to be a waste of time or you'll screw it up for everyone"
A guy could literally get ping ponged around the mountian, this camp has that, that camp has that over there, those guys hunt that on and on
-
Hahahaha! Isn't public land great! Everyone has a secret spot that's theirs and nobody else's! That guy screwed up my hunt! Bahahaha!

I'd like @Cryder to post his thoughts on this topic. Please and thank you.

I was thinking about taking the dog out grouse hunting in the bumping unit on the elk opener. Did some pre scouting and flagged some creek crossings. Saw some HUGE deer prints and deer droppings the size of whoppers. Fortunately deer seasons closed huh!? Good luck all you bumping grouse hunters this year! 😳

Hahahaha! Isn't public land great! Everyone has a secret spot that's theirs and nobody else's! That guy screwed up my hunt! Bahahaha!
Indeed! They should by some land adjacent to public, and then throw up some chain to keep the public from the public. ;) :chuckle:

You could just cross on the corner 😬😂

How are you gonna feel when said guy downs a nice one.
Then brings all his buddy's in next year.
Honestly I do feel by your posts all the way back to starting this topic .
That you feel you have some special claim to this public land.
Otherwise why give a rats @$$.
My self if someone is hunting a public spot . I just move on to the next spot. I don't really take pictures of boot tracks.
And yes I do have spots I've hunted for 20+ years.
Elk ,deer, whatever your hunting will be back the next day, week,or after the season has closed.
In all my years of public land hunting,I have never took a picture of a boot track, licence plate,or anything to try and track another hunter.
Even if you don't lay claim to the land, your still laying claim to the animals that use that public land.
Which they are not yours to claim.
Good luck finding him.
But you might not like what you find.
Share your intell so your spot will go to crap.
Sometimes your just better off letting someone fail and they will move out your spot in no time at all. :twocents:

This belongs in the bigfoot thread...........................Irrefutable! >:(
You bumped into some boot tracks that were bumping around in the bumping so you want to bump into the guy so he doesnt bump the elk out of the bumping, and said bumped boot track guy in the bumping is/may be lucky you don;t bump his teeth out in the bumping. And NO I have not took a bump off the bottle this AM! :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
:yeah:
Absolutely irrefutable >:( >:(

They absolutely should. Then walk the public land a day or two before the season with a super soaker filled with Irish Spring soap and water mixed. Douse every major deer traffic area and then go sit at your side of the property and reap the rewards of public land deer pushers! It's a beautiful thing.

This thread has taught me two things:
1. Some hunters feel incredibly entitled to a public resource.
2. The Bumping unit has good enough elk hunting that folks have been hunting it for decades and might be worth checking out next year

I was thinking the same as well. We should go scout it out together. Bring
all our family and friends and just bump around in there for awhile. Hopefully we don't get our tooths bumped out

Now that you brought it up maybe we should make a whole thread on everything "bumping" where should we start?(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221024/1b5b327901a592b0c53b159c7822a47e.jpg)

Glad I randomly woke up and saw all this, becoming genuinely interested in bumping around in there. North or South of the lake? East or west? Devils table looks like a cool area! OK back to bed haha(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221024/e81b08ca1be4df06c6826a1f95697f76.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221024/2c8556f69b32f0e0e57b3d7fe114cc33.jpg)

Also, I get the feeling you live on the west side of the mountains and you probably voted for Biden. You may be in the tech industry and you enjoy farting into cushions. You revel in the idea youre smarter than everyone. Big time hustler. Shaker and a mover. Now save some raffle tags for the rest of us. Dagom demoncrates I tell ya. Now back to bed

Did you find any elk there? I am wanting to find a new area to hunt, sounds promising.

Since this thread is lone gone... :chuckle: I was hunting the Umtanum area back in the 1990's and my bud and I were sitting a ridge doing some glassing for elk when we noticed a group of trees next to a small opening that leveled out. We could see something white on 2 of the trees. Whatever it was, it stuck out like a sore thumb, even from the far distance we were looking at it. Curiosity got the best of us, so we made a game plan to still hunt through the timber and then hike up the back of that ridge and drop down to where the trees with the white spots on them were.
Hours later when we got there we also noticed yellow flagging/caution tape tied to some of the trees and long tails of it on the ground. The "white spots" happened to be signs printed on paper that were slipped into a plastic sleeve and then that was slipped into a ziploc bag and stapled to the trees. The signs read something about this spot is "saved" for "xxxxxxx" elk camp that has been camping/hunting in this exact spot since the 60's... blah, blah blah. There were 2 leveled out spots for wall tents, holes where latrines were dug, and also behind camp in the timber was a pretty elaborate setup with a sink and and countertop where some sort of outdoor wash area or kitchen was set up.
We laughed at the thought of someone "saving" or "reserving" public land like that. So we removed all the signs and yellow flagging tape because we always "pack out more than we pack in", and didn't want to leave all the "litter" about.

I would have pulled all the flagging and garbage myself!!
These people/persons act like they have a mining claim.

Just make sure you were old socks over your boots, and walk backwards so the “locals” can’t track you.
Bumping in the Bumping!

I wear something real similar to this, sneak into them honey holes :IBCOOL:

This is the most action this place has seen all season, might as well hunt each other!

I think if all you want to do is say: "hey man, this is a pretty tight area for all of us and there are some things that can ruin it for everyone. With that said, I want you to know about A, B & C issues that can make it a bad hunt for all of us, so please entertain me so that we all hopefully have a good hunt..."
Nothing wrong with that in my opinion.
Was up camping in Rimrock unit a few weeks ago just to relax with some old friends and came to a great camping spot with three very large tents and nothing else. It was obviously an elk camp waiting for the season. We contemplated sleeping in their tents and using the site but decided to just move on!

Maybe those tents were the ones that burnt up? Describes in another huntwa thread.

Oh no definitely not wall tents that I saw in that thread. These were like very large family style Coleman tents. Next to the north fork of the Tieton River. Beautiful place to camp.

This may have been said and may not be the case but… I know biologists flag salmon spawn beds along some of the tributaries in that area so what looks like a crossing maybe a spawn bed!?
