Title: Working man raffle tag winner
Post by: Terminalist on October 25, 2022, 09:46:09 PM
I drew the North Central Washington raffle tag (which is good for any 200GMU mule deer hunt from September 1 through December 31). I am a working man and didn't stack the box like we know some guys do, which also means I can't hunt as long as I would like to not being retired.

Desert 290 rut sounds incredible, but the uniqueness and possible upside of gambling on weather and a migration hunt in Entiat 247, Swakane 250, Mission 251 etc. sounds like once in a lifetime.  I am not asking for a spot, I am trying to understand the migration since no one ever gets these dates to hunt and it is impossible to get information on them.

How often is there enough snow to push the deer out of the Cascades before December 31?  I'm hoping to better my best buck which currently is a heavy mid 190's buck.

-PM's are also welcome

Let’s see a pic of the hog you speak of.  A 200 inch deer is doable but I wouldn’t get your hopes up.  The areas you speak of just aren’t what they used to be.   I would personally hunt the rut regardless of the snow….the big bucks will be easier to find as they will be chasing does.  Just my two cents.   Good luck and make sure to post success photos.

Hunt 290 until you kill a masher or the weather shows up in Entiat. Then spend some time in the Entiat. Good luck

Congrats on your draw! Please let us know what you turn up.

As stated, I would try 290 in Nov and 247 or others in Dec.

I know of several guys who you're referring to that invest more than most in the raffles and they all work well in excess to your normal 40 hour work week. To them having the chance at a 4 month season means more of a chance to sneak away from work or work from the road and have a better chance at a quality hunt with their busy schedules. Shame on them for building successful businesses allowing more raffle tickets to be bought.

Oh goodness! You have a dream tag!! I must agree, If you can focus on November with your time, you'll have the time of your life!! Looking around the desert is a must, but once they get moving in the mountains, I think I'd spend time there. Good luck!! Enjoy!

Dream tag, definitively hunt the rut but I believe that most of the bigger bucks don't show up on the traditional winter ranges till December and that they are rutting in country that is very difficult to get into.

It is very obvious that the op does not know the guys who "stack the box", otherwise he would have chosen different language. As stated by mtmuley, most of the Washington guys would fall into the workaholic category. Also not a time to further divide.  I have many thoughts on raffles that I will save for a different point in time,  we really need all demographics that support hunting and conservation on board right now.  Best of luck to the op. :twocents:

Not trying to get anyone upset. I myself have no clue who stack the box and frankly i could care less. So my language would have been similar. I just took it that he hit the raffle jackpot and his time & money was limited. My understanding is that Raffles are normally guys with a lot of $ buying there tags, it is good to know that isn't always the case here in Washington.

You are not far off. It's an investment,  an investment with little security. Regardless of who wins the raffle is usually a good to great bet and generally not sour grapes to the small number ticket guy winning.   :twocents:

If my comment is what you're referring to as criticism, then I don't know what to say. I just made a statement that some of the guys who "stack the box" are some of the hardest working guys out there and a first time poster should realize that. I love to see the underdog win these raffles as does 99% of us hunters......and no, I didn't stack the raffle although if I had the finances I'd love to.

Not trying to jump in on your guys conversation, but i do disagree with you on the part a first time poster should realize this. I'm somewhat new here, been a long time lurker and have hunted WA for 30 years and wasn't fully aware of how the raffles worked out. I do now thou and it is was welcoming news.

I have no issue about you posting what you did. Some people may view it as hurting feelings and scary people off, people shouldn't be so sensitive.... If you didn't post what you did, i would of had no clue who was stacking the box  Hopefully the OP feels the same way....

Congratulations on the tag. I’d hunt every bit of spare time you have from now to the end of the year. I think it’d be worth it to hunt all the areas, you never know where a big buck might show up. Plus when you get burnt out on one area or type of hunting you can move to another.

Personally I would quit my job.... :twocents:

But I'm retired so talk is cheap...

Cool tag.
You actually have the perfect scenario shaping up for migration bucks. Heavy mnt snow forecast for the next couple weeks.
Spend a couple days in 290 but I would definitely want to be in the foothills looking over migration bucks by the 15th- 20th..imo

No issue with the "hard working' average guy spending extra hard working $ on raffle tickets. However, I know of several persons spending $6,000-$20,000 on raffle tickets. That's a problem for the average hunter and a problem with the system IMO....Congrats and kill a masher! I have some ideas if you are interested.

THIS   :yeah:   There are definitely some huge bucks in the desert. Overall odds better there than in the Entiat.......until December, then its a tossup.

Post by: teanawayslayer on October 27, 2022, 08:31:50 PM
Entiat is not even close to what it once was. Even the later half of December it isn’t that great. You’ll see a ton of bucks lots in the 120-170 range. The mashers aren’t behind every tree. Set a goal of what you want and stick to it. Even if that means eating the tag. Boots on the ground in the desert would be my first choice of where to hunt.

With all that’s been said you’ll most likely never get the tag again, take the buck that suits you and don’t look back.😉

Unfortunately our mule deer herds in Washington are declining at a rapid pace not ever to recover IMHO.

Wondering if this was the buck shot in the entiat during the late archery season.  If so the hunter should be proud that they shot it while a bow hunter was stalking in and about 10-20 yards from a shot.   Would have been a decent first buck for the new archery hunter….but not even close to 190.  Like 4 years of good horn grown from 190.

Well...it is titled: "Working man raffle tag winner"...so, maybe he was working the whole time? or maybe he couldn't afford all the hunts, and as much as we all want a sheep tag, what if you couldn't afford to have a mount done so it would only add to the angst of what to do if you killed one...as much as we all want to know more, obviously the poster doesn't want to share and that is his right.

On to bigger and better things! Anyone else excited for 2023 yet? I already got hunts planned for WA & ID, and putting in for MT...

I personally don't care if he shares his hunt or not, but he did start this topic and spent the money on at least one ticket to hunt these animals. If one worked the entire 3.5 and 4 months of these seasons then why would they even buy a ticket? He saw no shortage of  mtn lion sign, so that tells me he obviously had some time to hunt. Also let's say he didn't have the funds to mount a sheep. What's wrong with an awesome self done euro mount for free and a bunch of the best meat on the planet in your freezer?

If the snow isn't good for Entiat then stay in the desert but once the weather report looks like Entiat is going to be good then go to Entiat.  Go to Entiat a day or 2 b4 Entiat starts to look good. If ur hunting with a MF amd have 4 or 5 good sitting spots to hunt and u can hit a paper plate 8 out of 10 times at 600 yards and have decent glass then u have the luxury of waiting for the 200" but if that's not u take the 1st one over 150"  a 150" is a very nice buck for wa state
