Title: Late season NE whitetail
Post by: vandeman17 on October 31, 2022, 04:41:28 PM
Anyone heading out for late season? It looks like it could finally be a snowy late season which should surely help. I am super busy with work but going to try and sneak away for a few sits on the weekend. Good luck to everyone going out

Works got me busy as well. Looks like probably blacktail only but I might make it over for 2 days. Told myself all year not to get too busy...

I’ll be there for pretty much all the late season. I love hunting in the snow, hopefully we get quite a bit of it!

I’ll be up here for late season 5 days over Veterans Day weekend as usual. Hoping for some good snow but not enough that I can’t drive in to my property. The last year that we had really good snow that weekend my entire party tagged out. All within 500 yards from the cabin. For some reason when it snows a bunch they funnel down the drainage and like to hang out in my reprod.

Headed up friday for week.  Have 3 bucks (a 3 and fork and a spike) i saw in Oct.  hopefully at least one evaded the other hunters.  Weather will be the exact opposite. I plan to spend the week sitting in the rain and snow all day.  Probably have to take a few slow walks to stay sane.

Deer haven't been moving much yet, still holding up in that private hole somewhere.

Big bucks are where you find them regardless of ownership.  You can hunt in the snow or below it.  Snow may get them moving a bit more, but not necessarily.  For sure they and their sign are easier to see.  Find some does and sit on them.   :twocents:

I'm heading out.  Wondering if I'm going to have the mountain to myself, the way the weather is looking.  I do love hunting in the snow, the way I started many years ago.  Good luck and be safe.

I'm headed over with my son and buddy on the 14th or 15th staying till it closes. Hunting in the snow has it's advantages but when it freezes and gets crunchy like walking on Frosted Flakes it makes things very difficult!!

This is a year that I wish I could spend 4-5 days up there in my stand all day but unfortunately, work doesn't allow it. Depending on how we do and the weather throughout the week, I might head back up next weekend too.

Cold, snow, AND windy.  Dont forget recovery gear and a saw for the blow downs.

Love me some cold deer hunting weather and rutted up bucks. This has been my favorite time to hunt deer. Not so hot, no bugs, deer are hungry and moving in daylight.  Good luck out there and be smart about the weather and gear!

Yes, forecasts showing down to 10 degrees overnight next week. Should be good if we get enough snow for chains to bite, but I’m not holding my breath. I’ve seen the logging roads ice-up to where you couldnt walk! And with the crunch, better be prepared to sit all day. Still, I’d rather have cold than not!

Anyone ever had success calling during late WT? I've tried grunting before but didn't know what I was doing at all....still don't!

Tried rattling for BT last year and recently saw some guys have success with fawn bleats/doe in estrus bleats for BT. Might give those a try.

Dont draw attention to yourself as you will most likely be seen before you even notice a responsive buck.  If you just cant stand it, light rattle/tickling and some grunt tube work.

I'll be up road hunting with my daughter (12) on sunday. her first year with a deer tag. She's not quite ready for a full day hunt, especially with the weather forecast. So we'll start slow and mostly stick to the truck where its dry, warm and plenty of hot cocoa. I'll save my solo hunt days for late ML in 113. hoping we'll have an opportunity at some grouse or a turkey as well. I'm worried what access will look like come the weekend with the snow. We'll either do 117, 111 or 113 depending on which area looks to be most accessible. I'm hoping to get some updates on here to help me decide.

last year during late rifle we had a forky standing at the end of an old logging road that would have been an easy kill for her (not guaranteed of course). Go figure I didn't get a tag for her since she wasn't showing much interest at the time. would have been a good way to start though... I had ML tag so it was his lucky day.

good luck everyone.

See that a winter storm warning has been issued for the n.e.. should at least get the deer moving.

Thats conventional wisdom Kramman. I hope it’s true.
I’ve seen them hole-up just as often though. My suggestion…get off the roads and push the thick. Slowly.

Rattling is a hoot!

I could've stabbed a few big bucks with a spear, no joke

With the deer numbers as low as they are... I don’t think I’d leave anywhere to come try to find one in 121, blue tongue/ehd/ predators...  low low low deer numbers.  :twocents:

About 2-3 inches in Lincoln county over night and still coming down. I can only imagine it's double up in the Colville Ntl.

Yeah that if I was as on the wet side I’d be pushing the jungle for a black tail this year. Whiteys were crushed last year from Pomeroy to the Canadian border, not even counting predators which pick away at the rest of them that didn’t succumb to the diseases. Black tail are probably the only deer species in our state that aren’t in a dramatic population decline. Wish they never pulled the point restrictions on the north units.

I will echo the sentiment here. I have not had a SINGLE DEER on the trail cams on my PO county property since August. During early ML elk I did not see a single deer. It was surreal. I’m not optimistic but who knows I could get lucky.
