I have a Remington model 788 in 6mm, and just wondering for deer sized game, which type of ammo would work better. Both the 100 grain soft points, and the Hornady 95 grain SST have a sub 1" group at 200 yards, so accuracy is good with both. Of course the soft point will probably penatrate better, and have a pass through, while the SST would probably do more internal damage. For this specific caliber, which would you prefer?

I've killed many deer with my 6mm Remington Mowhawk. I've only used 100 grain. I feel the bigger the better for that small of caliber for deer.

100gr soft point has treated us well. Usually find the bullet in the hide on the opposite side. We use 100 gr Hornaday Interlock bullets. I think any factory 100 gr soft point will work the same. I am not sold on the SST on game performance. This review on the SST is based on Hornadays reduced recoil 125gr 30-06 loads. They worked, but not the best at all on the 3 deer my boy got with them. So, I may not have given the SST a fair shake, but I won't buy any.

If you have a rifle that shoots sub 1" @ 200 yards, either ammo will be fine provided you put it in the sweet spot. Dead is dead the deer wont know.

I would go soft point as well. I'm not a fan of grenade bullets at all for anything I intend to eat.

Yeah, it is a really sweet shooting rifle.

I would also go soft point for the 6mm. I do use the sst’s in my 7mag. But I’m starting out with 156 grains not 90 so more room for error. If you try to punch a deer through the shoulders with these you will have lots of meat loss because the bullet will explode. But I shot my buck behind the shoulders this year at 400 yards breaking ribs on both sides and found the SST in the opposite hide almost 100% weight retention

Yeah, it is a really sweet shooting rifle.
They really are, I had the 788 in both 6mm Rem and 22.250 back in 1975, reloaded for both. Sold or traded them away in the late 80's and still regret it.

I wouldn't use small fast SST for any game. I had a warm loaded .30-06 with 165 grain SST that blew up in a coyote at 100 yards. They are too soft IMO for game.

I shot a buck with it last year using a 95 gr SST. He was quartering away at 50 yards. Caught him in front of the ribs, took out the heart, and exited out the chest between his front shoulders. Left a really good blood trail. I guess at close range, and no bone they stay together for a pass through.
