Hey all, longtime lurker here. I’ve spent a lot of time getting intel from this site and figured it’s my turn to contribute.
Little about me, I’m a 24 year old knucklehead who bought 10 tickets and won the mule deer raffle. I haven’t spent much time in the Chelan units but I have a decent amount of experience in the Desert. I really want to fill this tag in the mountains but we will see.
Started my journey in the desert scouting and setting trail cams in the desert. Tried my best to cover the unit and look at everything before November came. I turned up some nice bucks but no shooters.
Fast forward to November and here I am in the Entiat. First 2 days were slow with only small bucks and does and lots of road hunting. As I sit here writing this there’s about 10” of fresh snow and still coming so we will see what tomorrow brings.
Im excited for the journey of this tag and seeing where it takes me.
-
Good luck!
Having that permit should be awesome, especially with the current conditions.
-
Congrats on a great tag. Be patient don’t settle. It will only get better
-
Are you familiar with the unit? Do you have a plan on how to hunt it? I wouldn't want you wasting this weather just blindly trying to run into something. Hopefully one of the locals or guys with Entiat experience can chime in for you and put you on a good path. Good luck.
-
Entiat will get better the last two weeks in december
-
Highside, as many hours as I’ve spent researching on this site I almost feel like i grew up here :chuckle: just kidding. I feel good about what I got going and a pretty exact plan of what I want to do and when. On the other hand, I wouldn’t shy away from help or any pointers someone might throw my way.
Loggin off for a day or two. I’ll update you guys when I get back into civilization.
-
Wow buddy congrats on the raffle! Enjoy yourself out there and soak it all in, good luck
-
Good luck! Enjoy the hunt. I will be tagging along on your posts. PS - I am heading over to Pogue next week. This snow is great.
-
Welcome :hello:! Lots of luck on the tag! this weather is fantastic for moving what is left of our deer around. I hope you find just the right buck to make you feel good about the hunt and hang on your wall to always remember "that one year" when you drew a magic ticket. Bring your chains, the best glass you can find and the attitude that that with your best effort you will be rewarded! Look forward to following along!
Good luck!!
-
Congratulations on a Great tag Ty. Hope your dreams come true.
-
You were dealt a heck of a hand with this weather, let alone the tag. You may want to go pick up a powerball ticket. Lol. I’d wish you goodluck, but you appear to have all of it already. How about have a great hunt!
-
Good luck and keep us posted. The weather is definitely working for you this year.
-
Congrats on your draw! Good luck and enjoy!

Day 3: started off exciting with the fresh snow but was quickly brought down when my phone took a dump on me and had to head off the mountain. Luckily got it fixed quick and was back up the hill by about noon. Managed to scrounge out about 20ish deer with 8 bucks. All dinks.
Day 4: Frustration started setting in. Tried to climb up 4 different hills and had to turn around on every one of them. At this point I feel that I am absolutely not putting myself in position to kill a nice buck let alone a big one. Luckily my day was saved when I met Ironhead at about 2:30 and he said let’s take a drive. Immediately I felt that we were doing the right things and that good feeling came back. Within about the first 20 minutes we were looking at 2 nice bucks with the bigger of the 2 being a buck that was close to the 150-160 mark. The evening went on with more buck sightings and a lot more rut activity. I’d like to say I contributed to the successful evening but it’s hard to keep up with a guy as knowledgeable as Ironhead is.
Tomorrow will be my last morning in the Entiat for a bit. I’m gonna pack up camp and see what’s lurking in the cattails in 290.
-
With the early dump of snow this year, I'd stay right there in the Entiat. This kind of weather is what most late tag holders dream of!
-
Merriammagician, lot of things leading to this decision to leave. The first being that mobility is really hindering me especially being over here by myself. It’s really hard to be productive daylight to dark. I know I can hunt 290 hard right now and that I will have help in the Chelan units later this month and December.
-
Well after another morning with Ironhead I had a little change change of heart. Gonna stick it out up here for a while and see if one comes strolling along. Looked at some more bucks this morning and the rut is pickin up good now.
-
You can do way better than that, hang on for a good one!
-
That’s the plan but even the small bucks are fun to watch
-
Good on Steve @ironhead for the assistance.
-

The best advice I can give you is to make your move to 290 as soon as you can. Even if it's a week before you migrate back up north. Also, relying on the Entiat in December is not recommended these days. I have a lot of experience. However, your time with Ironhead is valuable.
-
Spent the past couple days with Ironhead and finally turned up a pretty one. Watched him for a while and tried to get another tag holder on him. Lots of bucks but not much for size yet. Up to 27 bucks today.
MtnMuley, we’re talking over a plan and I am gonna try to spend some time down there. Will probably make a move soon.
-
Nice looking.
-
Good pass, nice deer but needs to grow!

2nd this. The time to be in the desert is now
-
Good day today, ended with 34 bucks! We turned up a dandy right before dark but didn’t get a good enough look at him. Headed to grub’n pub in Entiat to make sure he isn’t there :chuckle:
I’m planning on making the move to 290 Sunday now. I’ll be down there for at least a week. If you see me bellied up in the restaurant at Mardon, don’t be shy.
-
Great self control passing the buck you seen so far Tye. Keep after it you’ll find the one you’re looking for
-
I rolled into 290 this afternoon and thought I’d share a few pics from some other tagholders the last couple days in Entiat.
My buddy who had a late Entiat tag was able to fill it on a great buck. He hunted hard for 8 days and after some highs and lows squeezed the trigger on a beautiful 4x4.
Another tagholder who I met over here finally put down the 5x5. I was able to watch this buck for a total of about 5 hours over 2 days. He cashed in 26 points on this hunt and this was his biggest buck. After he had a shoulder injury on his first load out I offered to help. Spent the morning yanking him out before I headed to the desert.
And before anyone ask, I do have permission to post these bucks.
-
What did that 5x5 tape out at?
-
Great stuff. I’m really enjoying this thread. That’s the buck you posted a live pic of isn’t it? I’ve been wondering if you have a particular type of buck you are after or just waiting for one to strike your fancy.
-
Rainier, he hasn’t taped him yet but will update when he does. I’m very curious too.
Bone, yeah that’s the buck from the live pic. I wont say too much about the type or size of buck that I am looking for but I do have plenty of time and am willing to take this the distance in search of him :IBCOOL:
-
Some fine bucks! Congrats to the hunters!
-
So I have had the rifle permit and an archery permit in the entiat. I would have shot that 5x5 with either permit.
I have not had the raffle permit but if I did I would pass that buck today and might regret it. That is why I’m curious about the score. I feel like it will land just over 160. With the raffle tag you can use a rifle all the way until the end of the year. That is when you will see the bigger deer if they show up.
-
I feel he’s close to 160 but not sure if he’ll break it or not. I won't regret passing that deer. It’s about the journey not the finish line! ;)
-
Exciting day today
Started off the morning bright and early and drove about 30 minutes to the trailhead only to realize I forgot my pack and spotter back at camp :bash: Instead of a long walk I had to make a short one and head back to camp. Fast forward to the afternoon. Hiked a couple miles into my favorite glassing dune. I glassed for about 2 hours and only turned up does with no buck. I was about to leave when I did one more scan something caught my eye wayyyyy out. Obviously a buck rutting a doe and all I could see was frame. Threw the pack on and made a move to about 800 yards. Next thing I know there was an all out rutfest going on down below me. With all the bucks running in and out of the brush it was hard to keep track of who was who. Kept waiting and finally the big buck stepped out. Great forks, wide but missing a g3.. :bash: So I just settled in and watched the show. Roughly about 10 bucks everyone of them rut crazed except a cactus buck that was caught in the middle.
Ended with 13 bucks and 50+ deer total. Sadly I don’t have pics of the biggest one but got some grainy ones of the other really nice ones. I do have a video of the big one to look back on but hard to get a screenshot off of it.
1st pic is the cactus buck, 2nd a nice 2x3, 3rd and 4th a big 3x3

The big 3x3
-
So much fun. Let's goooo! Thanks for sharing.
-
Nice looking bucks, keep the updates coming and good luck tomorrow!!
Threads like this have become too far apart. I recall one of these that went down to the wire on new years eve one year.
-
Keep looking. I just got a picture of a 33" 4x4 that a friends son shot 2 days ago in the desert unit. He was chasing 4 does very hard. They had been looking over deer for several days before this one showed.
-
So happy to see someone giving the tag the effort it's worth! Pulling for you!!
-
Epic adventure
-
Tagging along, and good luck!
-
Can't wait to see how this turns out. Good luck.
-
Good luck!
-
Really fun to follow along - thanks for sharing and good luck!
-
You retired or really have alot of vacation? lol
-
enjoying the show. good luck!
-
Kirkl, I was waiting for someone to ask me that just didn’t think it’d be this early. I work with my dad for the family business. So while I’m gone he picks up my slack :chuckle: Luckily he’s on board to help me give this tag all it’s got!

The day of 4’s
…Well except another big 3 that I seen :chuckle: another day where the evening proved to be better. Tried covering the numbers today and ended with about 8 4 points and 16 bucks total. The last two bucks of the evening made me a little twitchy but no shooters yet.
On another note I got a real appreciation for photographers on this site. Trying to take great pictures of the bucks I’m seeing has been very challenging. Luckily I’m getting better by the day.
Here’s the 2 better ones

The big 3 and a 4 right at daylight

Ditch those and find better.
My 2 cents.

This is awesome! Thank you for all the update’s including us on this fine adventure. So cool to document this get opportunity at an amazing hunt.

The second deer posted would have been very hard to pass up.....that is a dandy buck.
Thanks for taking us on this ride....what a cool tag to have.
-
That old 3pt looks to have a huge body. Very tempting :bfg:
-
Glad you're more patient than me. As fun as hunting for months would be I'd end up shooting the first decent sized or double throat patch buck I saw :chuckle: good luck. Been enjoying following along.
-
Stay strong Tye. Enjoy the hunt. Let us know if you need anything. We will head your way.

I’m only gone one day and you already leave your pack and spotter at camp :bdid:
At least you didn’t leave your rifle at camp :chuckle:

Couple of those bucks I would of had a hard time passing on.

Great thread. Enjoy the journey, it’s a great opportunity that most of us are only able to dream about.

Hang in there buddy. You are an incredible human being and deserve this amazing adventure. I can not wait to see the buck that makes you happy.

Same. Second pic of the four posted; bottom pic in the post I quoted. Hope you find one wider and taller.
-
This is getting good. That 2nd buck in the day of 4's would have been a tough one for me to pass. Can't wait to see what you don't pass.
Keep 'em coming and thanks for sharing your adventure.

:yeah: Same here. Second buck posted would have ended my hunt, but I already know that about myself and if I ever draw a quality tag in this state, I'll have someone holding my ammo :chuckle:
-
Would have had to work at controlling buck fever on the 2nd or 3rd pictures buck. That 3pt also looks like a whopper!!

I'll be holding my own ammo.
That will save me from fighting my buddy for my ammo so I can shoot that buck.
I couldn't hold out if he stood there.....

Knowing that it will only get better and knowing you can use a rifle in late December I would have passed as well.
With only $60 invested in tickets you are playing with house money.
I am excited to see what you decide on.
-
Tagging along and wishing you the best of luck

Yesterday was pretty uneventful. I did scrounge up about 10 bucks but a couple of them were repeats.
This morning was pretty good after a long walk. Spotted a buck with a giant frame and spent the morning playing hide and seek with him in an overgrown sage flat. I seen him about 4 times total and was able to confirm he was a 3x4 but one of the bigger bucks I’ve seen on this trip. The last time I saw him I bumped him and about 5 does. When all the does went to the right in plain view of my spotter he peeled off the the left and out of sight. Tried for another hour or so to relocate him at least for a better look and a picture. Spotted the big 3 from a couple days ago about 1/2 a mile from where I last saw him. He manage to scrounge up 10 does and was havin himself a day! Got back to the truck at about 2 o’clock and moved spots before I ran into some truck problems. Spent the afternoon getting fixed up which left me little time for an evening hunt.
I know everyone is getting tired of the buck photos so I’ll leave ya a picture of a yote and a souvenir I picked up today.
-
Your gonna be fine. Stick where your at, think like a buck that’s wore out. You’ll “uncover” him👍
-
I was just thinking about how all the photos of bucks were sure ruining this thread :chuckle:
Hope the truck issues aren't too major, or reoccurring
-
That might be one of the prettiest yotes I have seen in quite some time. Nice picture.

Cool hunt so far, keep at em, youll find the one you're looking for!

:yeah:
I would be so anxious about the bucks coming in that you would shoot in a regular season that it would be making me squirm! Good luck!
-
That is the thing with a tag like this. You have to pass deer after deer that you would shoot any minute of the general season.
-
I would have a really hard time passing most of the deer in this thread. :yike:
-

Milk it till the end or until you see one that you can't shoot fast enough.
If you need to think.................Pass.

This is an awesome thread, waiting for the outcome. There are some NICE deer on here that I don't know if I would have passed up. Also, that is a healthy lookin' coyote!
-
Last few days have been much of the same. Rut is really slowing down here in the desert. I’ve been trying to hit new spots and see new bucks. Uncle is headed over today to hunt the next week with me. Trying to come up with a game plan for the coming week and it’s looking like we’ll stay in the desert until Wednesday before we head north for the rest of the week.
-
Got out this evening and seen 7 bucks. Manage to get about the best picture of the trip when this guy pushed his does all the way to about 50ish yards of me and put on a show.
-
Great updates.
-
Great pic. Really nice buck!
-
Keep passing up those young ones!! Good job!

I’d have to take the bolt out of my
Rifle and throw it in the bushes not to shoot the buck you just posted, congrats on the willpower and good luck! Line following this thread!

-
Ty, I’m proud of you for your will power. That last buck is gorgeous! He does look young. You hang in there. Any special draw tag is about the experience as much as the final trophy. You’ll know when it’s time.
-
The desert bucks aren't leaving and the Entiat bucks are arriving by the day. Keep at it, both places have the potential to spit out a 2 hundy.
-
Turned up 11 bucks today. Less and less does with bucks but still good hunting.
In other news heard some racket sitting around the fire last night only to go outside and see we were getting invaded by an army of raccoons. They all went piling out of the bed of my uncles pickup. Pretty entertaining as they weren’t to scared of humans. Took a bunch of convincing but finally got them to hit the trail.
Side note if someone happens to have a great big giant buck tied up. Send coordinates :chuckle:
-
Hang in there Tye The bucks are still nose deep in the dose where I’m at you’ll get your chance

The bite was on today
Woke up this AM and seen we had some weather blowing in today and figured we better hit it hard. Within the first 30 minutes of light we were looking at 12 bucks and an all out rutfest. Bucks were fighting and running every direction. Our three mile in three mile out morning hunt quickly became much longer as we couldn’t stop seeing deer. After we got all the way in there decided that I’d send my uncle back to the truck and I’d make a big loop. Well I chose wrong because his straight line back to the truck warranted 3 sheds and a giant 3x2. While I only managed to scrounge up a few more bucks. Ended the day with 44 bucks and to be conservative about 200 total deer.
Loading up tomorrow to head north. Wanting to spend thanksgiving in the snow.
How wide do y’all think this 2 pt is?
-
Couple more
-
Exciting Day.!!
Keep at it
-
That’s got to be a 35” 2x3!
Wow. What an amazing day.
-
I would have shot that 2x3.
What a great conversation piece

Awesome! Really cool thread ty.

You have me excited now! Leaving for late archery tomorrow :)

Best thread on HW!
keep it up OP Thanks for sharing.

Any updates?
-
Wednesday spent the day loading up and moving camp back up north.
Thanksgiving was good. Gradually seen a bunch of deer throughout the day. Ended with 32 bucks and got to watch another couple nice bucks scrap it out. Seems like good things are starting to happen up here. Capped it off by spending thanksgiving with the Ironhead household and boy do they cook up some good grub over there!
Mostly fogged out today so just poking around. 3 bucks so far.
-
Thanks for the update Ty. Us groupies were getting restless. Lol.
-
Second rut surge should be firing full
-
Awesome! Have fun!

It sure is here in SE Idaho, running themselves ragged today

If that wide 2 was unbroken I think he’d have been the one for me
-
Great thread, that super 2 is crazy! Good Luck!
-
I would have shot that 2x3.

Absolutely. Saw one just as big in Montana a couple years ago, if he would have had an eyeguard or two he would be on my wall today.. to this day I still kinda wish I would have pulled the trigger because you just don't see them that big .
-
Hoping for an update soon…….

This is so true, I've eaten two out of state tags. I just would not settle for less.

Well I ended up packing up and heading home yesterday after 20 some odd days. Since the last update I spent the last couple days looking for a certain deer with no luck. The big ones are hard to find but after this break I’ll be ready to hit it hard. Plan on hitting it on weekends until about the 10th or so and then staying over until the end. Getting a lot of fresh snow this week in the Entiat. Pretty excited to see how it is this weekend when the archery tags are all done and the deer settle down.
-
This has been a blast to follow from afar. Thank you for all the updates. Rooting for you.
-
:yeah: Seriously impressed with your composure and ability to hold out. What an experience

Getting a lot of fresh snow this week in the Entiat. Pretty excited to see how it is this weekend when the archery tags are all done and the deer settle down.
they’ll be gone and the Indians will show up. Unfortunately you won’t be alone. They were all over up there in December when my buddy had the raffle tag.
-
The fact that you have spend so much time in arguably the top 2 units that people apply for, and have not found the "giant," really shows just what kind of mindset a person should have if they were to draw a "quality" tag in WA. See a lot of people shoot great deer and others try to act like they could of done better, or act like the shooter should of held out. Like others have said, it's commendable the work and time you've put in. Great job
-
To the OP.....
You are a stronger man than me.
There's just no way I could hold off on some of the bucks you've posted.
May you be rewarded with the buck - and the hunt - of a lifetime!
-
Haven't checked in on this thread in a couple of weeks, and I'm VERY pleased to see that you're still at it...well, for our sake anyhow! You've seen some very impressive bucks, and I commend you for sticking to your purpose of finding THE buck that will satisfy YOUR requirements!
Having hunted the Desert Unit for 30+ years for birds, I've never studied the different specific characteristics of the mulies that are present there. Just looking at the pictures of the bucks you posted, references 3-4 completely different-looking bucks. They're all great specimens, just differing in appearance in various ways.
-
This is the most entertaining and informative thread I've ever read. Much appreciated. I wish more of us would do this on what are essentially once in a lifetime draws. I've had a lot of fun helping strangers with an area I took a trophy bull in. A tag I know I'll never draw again. Neither are these draw units a big secret, so what's the harm? Thank you!
-
 Great hunt so far!!!!!
-
Always lurking and following this one.
Great hunt so far, wishing you luck on a great buck.
I'd would of been DONE with those bucks posted.👍
-
That’s got to be a 35” 2x3!
Wow. What an amazing day.
I’m with you on that 35” ish.🤣
-
Back from my weekend trip in the Entiat. Snow is getting DEEP! Seen 30 bucks on the weekend. Lots of bucks hangin with does still, bucks by themselves and bucks getting into bachelor groups. Finally met one of the other raffle tagholders and had a nice conversation with him. Seemed like a really great guy and wishin him the best of luck! Next week they’re supposed to get even more snow. I definitely think I’ll be hindered without a snowmachine. Plan is to leave this coming Friday and stay through to the end!
-
That deer is a tank!

I know a guy selling a great two up snow machine that would do you real well up in those hills. :o
Still rooting for you to find a big buck.....one thing is for sure, this weather will have the big boys down low. If there was ever a year to find one, this is it. Good luck!!
-
Best thread of the year right here. It’s been fun to follow along! Hopefully your patience and persistence pay off because I’d say you have earned it. Best of luck hanging that tag on a monster!
-
What a great experience so far, been tagging along since the beginning. I figured you had a snowmobile or sxs. Unfortunately I do not but a few of my buddies do in the lake wenatchee area and cle elum area. If u get into a bind shoot me a pm if u can't find a sled to run.
-
Jrebel that’s a nice sled but a little more than I’ve got to spend right now :chuckle:
Builtfordtough I have a sxs and working on maybe getting a set of used tracks for it. Gonna have to take out a loan before this thing is over :chuckle: I really appreciate the offer!
-
You must have a great boss or retired
-
Think like a buck that is spent and just wants to relax. That’s were you will find him at this time, one of his purposes to be on earth have been achieved. He needs 3 things to make it til spring, at this point that’s whats on his mind, surviving. That’s where he will be, in close proximity to those three things.👍
-
What is the goal?
-
This has got to be one of the best threads! Looking forward to see what you harvest!
-
But keep watching the ladies, they do not quit this early

What model of sxs? Someone’s got to have a set laying around.
Snowmobiles:
Leavenworth area, check and see if one of the outfits will let you rent and take. Most are rent and ride with them
Cle Elum area: also 3 outfits in this area that rent sleds. Same thing, ask for a long term rental. Motortoys rentals and tours might be able to help you out.
Tri Cities: I believe Big Ds Powersports rents sleds and Donnie would probably be down with long term rental.
This is for sure the best post of the year!! You get in a bind let me know. Snow last weekend was blower pow and deep. Saw elk hanging out up to their belly.
-
Huntnphool the goal is to find one I like :chuckle: Not super worried about a number just enjoying a hunt I’ll likely never get to go on again and looking for a big one along the way!
Caseyd all that info is really helpful! I was able to get a rental lined up as a backup plan for at least a week or two if I need it.
-
This is one of the most respectable efforts I’ve heard of on a tag like this. You are doing what many of us dream of doing. You are truly getting everything possible out of this hunt. Good luck in the final weeks of your hunt! We can’t wait to see how this unfolds!

I’d have not spent so much time in Desert and checked out other units. I’d also not be completely focused on Entiat to finish it out. Go check out other units! :twocents:

Best answer ever.

Rolled back up to Entiat yesterday. Spent nearly all day setting up camp and shoveling snow. Picking up a side by side with tracks this AM then headed for the hill.
-
Sweet!!! Good luck!
-
Sending luck your way.
Time is ticking ,get after it.
-
Pulling for you. What an adventure.
-
Awesome. Glad you could get a solid mode of transportation to get you where you need to be.
-
What an awesome adventure! Good luck!
-
Good luck Tye

Side by side with tracks are the way to go but prepare yourself. Carry a set of snow shoes, shovel, extra fuel they are gas hogs and a small butane torch ( hard to wrench and work on if frozen up). And a basic over night kit for cold weather.good luck and happy hunting

:yeah: I know way too many guys being stranded in tracked machines a long ways from help. Almost makes someone not wanna ride one without another just incase. I know guys carrying full on tool boxes just incase the tracks break
-
Why not a snowmobile and a few extra guys on snowmobiles to help to cover a lot more ground? With a side by side take a satellite phone with the groomer’s phone number just in case. Ask the groomer how many side by sides he has rescued.
-
You are right a tracked side by side is no snowmobile
Tracked side-by-side’s work great for what they’re meant for. Which is running the roads that are to snowed in to drive trucks. Or sticking to groomed trails now that we can ride those. I go off trail in mine but only when there is a few Feet of snow or less. Sure if Tye shoots a monster down in the bottom of a steep draw and decides he’s got to cruise the thing right down to it in 5 feet of snow he will probably get stuck. But I think it’s gonna work perfect for what he needs it for. And it is awesome to get back in the heated cab, can’t do that on a snowmobile.
-
What's one of those tracked machines do speed wise? I imagine it'll probably slow you down quite a bit compared to wheels? Kinda cool I am not really involved in that world but I didn't know they made tracks for them.
-
spent a couple days on our guides tracked SxS, they do not go fast, steady as they go. I can see how people get stuck or broke down, you would think they are tanks and could go anywhere, but they are great for what they are built for. We had no issues with his, but we stayed on the roads, went slow over downed trees and turned around on the side of the road. When we retire and move to a 4 season state, there will be one in my garage.
-
In deep snow we keep it in low so 10 miles an hour at the most for us. I see guys running in high going 20-30 miles an hour on compact snow/ cleared road, it’s a loud rough ride. We have a friend that ran his in high in deep snow and he made it about 7-8 miles before the belt melted. He misunderstood someone telling him about what gear to run, lesson learned.

:yeah: They are NOT snowmobiles and shouldn’t be operated as such.
-
I thought Washington was a 4-season state. I have Buttercups, Lakes, Leaves and Snow.
-
Well covered some country today with Steve and turned up 35 bucks! The side by side worked great. Gonna hit a new unit tomorrow. I’ll try my best to keep this thing updated but gonna be hunting hard until the end.
Side note, the Entiat is getting over run with blacktails :chuckle: Steve really wanted me to shoot this booner blackie but I got a mule deer tag :dunno: :sry:
-
I've seen a lot of blacktails in the Entiat over the last 10 years. Definitely a cross as they usually have a mule deer body with larger antlers. Cool to see for sure
-
Obviously it's got a blacktail but as far as WDFW is concerned doesn't blacktail vs mule deer come down to the unit it's in?
-
Obviously it's got a blacktail but as far as WDFW is concerned doesn't blacktail vs mule deer come down to the unit it's in?
Yes, you are correct.....it is east of the PCT so it is a mule deer
-
Not a shooter with that tag,
-
Its a pretty cross though.
-
Not a shooter with that tag,
Needs another 20” of mass for that tag!
-
That buck took a wrong turn a few miles back lol. Yakima area predominately has bucks like that, dont see it as much in Chelan and okanogan counties though. Good call go find a big mule deer.
-
Just curious, Have you seen many Whiteys? few of those hanging around up there too.
-

What if, just what if Sly Ty is teasing us with a pic of another tag holders deer. I mean , all he said was he finally got his hands on one. Maybe Ty is starting to enjoy the effect this thread is having on all of us. It’s the highlight of my day to keep checking the thread for new posts. He may just be that cynical. Probably not as I know from personal experience what a great guy he is …..but what if? Either way, Thanks Ty,

He did say he got his hands around one, he didnt say .....
Patiently waiting like all the rest of the sheep. LOL

I’ll try and keep it short since most everyone is up to date on this hunt.
The morning started like most by defrosting everything and making coffee. Headed up the mountain by myself. Spent the morning looking a few bucks. About midday Steve texted me that he was ready for me to pick him up. We felt like we about had most of our spots covered and we’re thinking of new areas to try. We decided to hit a spot we hadn’t been to at all. When we got to the top of mountain to start looking down we were bummed to see that all the country we wanted to look into was fogged out. Steve figured we better change course and started heading to a spot he told me a big buck story from years ago. We were coming through a timber patch and started seeing some deer. Then all of a sudden Steve looked up the hill and said “buck, big buck.” As I was getting out to come over to him he turned and said “you might wanna grab the rifle.” When I put up the binos all I could see was mass! I immediately jumped on a rest and got on the trigger. I squeezed off in a hurry and was positive I pulled left. Steve said I drilled him and he was staggering towards us. I threw up the gun as he stopped facing me and let another fly off hand at 180 yards. When I looked back up that was all she wrote. He was piled up! Walking up there his mass got bigger and bigger. He carried it all the way through to the end of each point. Ever since the beginning I told everyone I wanted one of those big heavy mountain bucks. Well I found one!
-
Oh yeah! Awesome buck man!

Back on topic. Awesome buck. Really awesome hunt. So glad we got to follow along. The amount of bucks you saw and passed is just crazy.
This buck seems like one that was a no brainer after all the hunting you did and bucks you saw. I feel like it was a no brainer. I’m not sure I could have passed some of the bucks you did and I know there is no way I would have passed this one. As soon as I saw the photo I thought shooter. Inches never entered my minder. Shooter is all I thought.
Congrats on a great buck and thank you so much for sharing so much of the hunt.

I have to ask, what was the body size like on this deer compared to other deer you looked at? Also, what kind of condition was he in? Much fat left on him?
-
Also, Did dead eye Ty shoot him in the eye?

I heard a certain store employee deserves a thank you for selling a couple extra tickets.

Thanks everyone! It was awesome all the help and support I got on this thread. I met a lot of awesome people along the way. Steve was the one who really made the wheels turn on this hunt and I was fortunate to get hooked up with him on this site.
As far as the buck goes, DeadeyeTy did in fact shoot him in the eye :chuckle: Luckily the cape still looked great. Ive always wanted a wall pedestal mount and I think he’ll look great on it!
2MANY- That’s awesome that you heard about that! I don’t go in there all that often but everytime I have she hasn’t been working. If you know who it was that sold me the tickets I hope you will tell her thank you for me until I finally catch up with her!

I had been telling people it was lead poisoning.
Now your handle here makes a lot more sense! :chuckle:

WOW, this was addicting as the Bobcat thread.. i literally read from the beginning word for word... Incredible freaking hunt man... Holding out during the MuleDeer rut is the hardest thing, they all look big especially when you hunt blacktails. Incredible whopper of a buck, i wouldnt even tell us the score, keep it to yourself.. Scores ruin hunts and make people brain dead takes away from what its all about.. its scored heavy as hell and big... Wall hanger... :IBCOOL:
