Hello,
My son drew the Alkali cow permit beginning 11/5. We have been waiting for some weather to set in before spending massive amounts of money for gas. Any suggestions on training areas? We scouted in early October but it was a waste of time.

Which training areas are open?

Start with units around I-90 or badge pocket

I wouldn’t wait for weather. Here pretty quick the Indians will have the majority of the elk in the central impact area. Get him out and find him a cow.

I had the tag last year. I hunted hard for 7 days. Never saw a cow outside the impact zone. Get out there and hunt, don't wait! Too much pressure out there all year. If I am not mistaken there was not a single cow harvested during that hunt last year. At least that's what I was told by the MP's out there on the last day of the hunt. Badger pocket had a few bulls. With this weather you might get lucky and something might get pushed down and across the freeway.

They have been crossing back forth from poison springs into the unit all week. Make sure with this weather you stay on the main gravel roads or you will be stuck. The dirt road will be gooy gumbo and the bottom will fall out.

If unit 12 or 15 are open that's where I would be. The cows tend to venture out from the impact area at night and sometimes you can catch them at first light crossing back. :twocents:
