it depends on the length of the shot... if it's close with rifle I aim for right behind shoulder try and take out the lungs. If it's a long shot aim for shoulder as it's a bigger target... rather it thru ribs to save the shoulder meat... this was how I was taught and it works for me.

You just taught another.👍

I highly recommend John Jeanneney's "Dead On: Deer Anatomy and Shot Placement for Bow and Gun Hunters". Great advice not just on shot placement, but how to diagnose and follow up on different kinds of hits.

Lung, lungs, or heart with an arrow. With a rifle you’ve gotta hit bone to ensure a quick tracking job; shoot at off shoulder, that’ll do.
-
I really like a neck shot inside of 50 if the situation is right. Right behind the shoulder for anything else.

My daughter did a frontal on a deer once and I did on on an antelope. Not sure why I had to learn that lesson twice. It's plane jane side shot or nothing for us with rifles.
-
I aim for off side shoulder quartering shots, which ensures vitals are hit. Behind shoulder on broadside shots. I’ve taken two frontal shots that worked well, but I was forced to because the dang deer just wouldn’t move. So it all depends on what your opportunity is and how confident you are with you abilities.

Hopefully I have good shot placement.....
If I could find a buck to shoot. LOL 😆
Tracked around in the snow all day yesterday.....
Truck is running right now ....
Wish me luck you all.

:yeah: unless meat buck only then behind shoulder. Trophy thru shoulder unless shooting Bergers then ???

Shot my big buck this year through the throat patch, he was bedded with sage obscuring his body. Under 100 yds

I prefer behind the shoulder. I like shoulder meat. I prefer to not take hard quartering shots because you are forced to sacrifice a shoulder. However, I also take the shot I'm given if I don't have time to wait. I have shot a number of animals in the neck the last few years with predictable results. However, the neck is a small target and I have seen animals not die from neck shots.

:yeah: and :yeah:
Situation has to be right, but agree I like the neck shot best.
