What could possibly go wrong? If you stay away from the edge, you will be fine. Lots of the lakes are riddled with warm water springs.

I wonder if they plow that road down to the lake.
Or if you still have to walk a mile in the snow.

Couldn’t imagine walking down to that lake in snow with gear.  I planted that lake for years until last year.  Even helped rehab it.  Miss that lake.  Might be a good one to take the kids to.

You want to go to Fish Lake by Lake Wenatchee. Easy fishery and lots of perch and trout.

I've never tried it myself, but I have talked to folks who have done quite well ice-fishing for Browns on Fish Lake, near Lake Wenatchee.

I had 10 inches of mostly white ice

I got a Marcum under water camera this Christmas, my daughter sure bogarted that all day  :chuckle:    but she was slaying the fish!

If you bring kids, that camera might be the difference of fishing alone or them begging you to go!

Yep, not me either.  I have heard some guys are catching nice numbers of perch out there, but I've busted through the ice once before and am not in a hurry to do it again!  If it ever turns cold again, we'll have to meet up.  I have all the gear you need.

Ice is plenty thick enough and 40 isn't gonna melt off enough to make it unsafe but the surface slush may be really unpleasant. I was hot to trot for curlew this weekend but my son doesn't have chest waders  :chuckle:

Heading to Curlew tomorrow. I hope we have decent ice conditions. We usually do very well fishing there, but it seems to be mixed reports from there this year. Seems everything iced up early and hard this year, then with it warming up has made things a bit sketchy in a lot of places. Plan on a Moses Lake trip next month, but who knows if that will even be possible by then. Ill report back with status at Curlew.

Curlew had 9 inches yesterday out from the state park.

tungsten white glo jig tipped with 3-4 white maggots, refresh the glo every fish.   Drop fast to get past trout fingerlings

Bite starts at 2pm to low light

Good luck!

I went approximately 2ish inches wider than the width of the sled, each side. I was on the fence with going wider to fit my shelter on one side and auger on the other and all other stuff in the sled itself… but I didn’t. I think I’m going to add a type of a shelf type thingy off the back you can set more crap on it and also sit on it for fishing if you want.

Put in a long day on Curlew, between 2 of us put almost100 perch on the ice.  Coulda easily hit the hundo but we weren't counting until time to pack up  :chuckle:

and that was a lot of trying to keep the little ones off the hook using a camera to select which perch I wanted.  Lot's of fun

Piereee is an interesting lake the bass were planted by a bucket biologist. At one time the WDFW was considering making it a warm water species fishery and charging a fee to fish it. The water quality is pretty clear but it used to be a premier Cutthroat Lake. But during the summer it gets fished pretty hard and the bass have had everything thrown at them in a tackle box and then some.

Hey KF what underwater camera do you have and does it work good?
Marcum mission SD with panner on sale at marcum for 350 bux, it’s the whole kit battery, panner and everything.  I highly recommend a panner, almost useless without a panner.

It works great, if you want to be a YouTuber though you’ll need to step up a few notches for on board recording features.  It has an old school RCA video out jack if you have a TV in your shanty you could plug that in. It doesn’t record at all.

Couple tricks I learned is it’s nice to have a big white jig to position the camera right, it’s easier to find a big walleye or burbot jig than a tiny perch jig once you drop the camera down and attach it to your panner and start circling the camera around looking for your jig.

I put the camera hole about 24 inches away from the fishing hole, in murky water you don’t see very far.  If it were clear water I’d got 30 or so inches.

I put the ducer hole opposite of the camera hole, it helps with the camera cord not showing up so bad on the sonar screen.   I use the ducer 1st and once I’m on fish and put up the hut then I’ll get the camera out last.

It’s super fun and with kids its a no brained, plus I able to selectively fish, keeping the dinks off and letting the big ones take it.  I Ended up with a lot of 11 inch perch that way while my buddy got a ton of dinks lol

Cool, thanks for the detailed info. I’m just now studying the different cameras and it’s between Aqua-vu and Marcum. Sounds like Marcum has better viewing in murky water and Aqua-Vu is easier to use? I have a Garmin livescope so I’ve been extremely satisfied with marking fish with that and I can tell who’s coming, who’s big and if it’s trout or perch for the most part, love it! I thought I’d turn up the volume on my fishing entertainment with a camera… it’s never enough  :chuckle:

Post by: KFhunter on February 20, 2023, 01:12:13 PM
The Aqua view my buddy has is the smaller cheaper one, he doesn’t even attempt to use it now that he’s seen mine.  He’s going to sell or give it away.

The cord on his aqua view is very thin, the problem is it makes it harder to stabilize in the water.

If you’re looking at aqua view make sure the cord is thicker and stiffer, it makes panning so much better.

Slimers, slime rockets, for the white meat purists are referred to for the local trout. The parasites are called CO-pods. WDFW will tell you they won't harm you if cooked properly. I'm not so keen about feeding them to my wife. Trout in Pierre had them for a while.

So Curlew sucked again. Lots of fish on the Garmin but not a lot of takers. Talked to some other guys and they said it’s been super finicky and slow the past few weeks. Okay enough of that. Can you get to Pierre from Orient and is there enough room up there for a pickup and side by side trailer. Think I’ve had it with Curlew for a bit.

You can get there from Orient - either up Orient cutoff rd to Pierre Lake rd or up Rockcut rd to Pierre lake rd

But I wouldn’t go either of those roads, I would turn at Barstow store and take Pierre lake road from there after you cross the Barstow bridge and turn north, that will take you to the lake

The boat launch is plowed, but narrow and not a lot of place to park.  It is a circle though so you don’t need to back out.  Just park on the side over as far as you can get

I don’t have an ice report, just drove in and looked

Is the Orient side kinda rough? We’re staying at our cabin in Curlew so we’re coming over Boulder.

No rougher than boulder lol!

Watch out for big frost heaves so you don’t launch your sxs lol

Orient up to Pierre lk road isn’t bad, just a dirt road and a bit steep for a few miles.

I had thought you were coming up 395

You owe me a fishing report!   Good luck

So we just did a drive by at Pierre today. We’ll hit it in a few days. We took sand creek over. Looks like the camping/launch area hasn’t been plowed for awhile but people are driving in there. There were a couple guys out there today.

Okay, so we hit Pierre lake today. Got there a little late but still did well. Caught a crap ton of LM bass, 2 were pretty nice and I kinda regret not taking them home for dinner. The husband caught a dang nice a Brookie, I made a grave mistake trying to pick it up by it’s mouth with my fingers and cut the crap out of my thumb, toothy! As long as we were in 20ish feet and weedy bottom we saw fish. I’d like to go back one more time before the thaw.

Were you the one asking about my hitch setup?

It’s pretty cheesy, but it hauled up a big load and broke trail doing it

It’s just a strap of round baler belting around the grab bar and a thru bolt lol

I haven’t made a smitty sled, I just can’t find a good reason to use a Otter or jet sled either to do it either

If I make one it’s probably going to be a used car topper rack, my daughter has a real nice one sitting in the garage…. Hmmm

If I made it removable I could take it off just like off her car by using a couple cross bars like a car but going to skis

Buddie of mine made a wooden box with a hinge lid and screwed it to a runner sled, it’s a bit tippy but is really nice to drag compared to my sled.
Yes that way me asking about your hitch for your snowmobile, on the kids flat Polaris bumper I just drilled a hole and put an I-bolt in, my round aluminum bumper I didn’t want to do that, still haven’t rigged up anything for it yet.

You could bolt a board for a seat across the middle of the sled and let him ride in the sled behind the snowmobile? If you put a hitch on your sled, the type that bolts on the sides of the sled rather than the front of the sled work best so the hitch can pivot back over the sled when hauling. My hitch is attached to the front and won't fold back, it takes more room to haul due to that, I'm going to change it someday.

Post by: KFhunter on March 02, 2023, 05:29:55 PM
I have Otter sleds and the hitch does suck, it won’t fold all the way back like your picture.

I yank the 2 pins and take the hitch off, when dragging it by hand I use the same two pins for a rope I got that has loops tied at the ends and a pvc pipe for a handle bar to make it more comfortable

What I’m doing now is figuring how to get it up on the snowmobile deck while it’s fully loaded, thinking a little boat winch is in order

Now I got two sleds I can hook together and drag a lot of gear for winter hunts/camps or trapping whatever

Some skis I cobbled up wouldn’t hold up to a snowmobile in the whoops or busting trail hitting logs etc

In my opinion Smittys are ment for man to pull but if you gotta snowmobile for power I wouldn’t mess with the design either. A little friction helps control it.

Back when Skillet was leaving us all behind here in Washington, he was trying to sell a 8x8 Clam pop-up. He didn't get any takers and I have kept it in my shop in South Canada. If there are people who would want to give hardwater fishing a try it could be available locally.

It's just my size KF. Throw a small propane heater in it and I'm golden.
I forgot about that. I bought a pop up to throw on my smitty for short hikes out on a lake. We have a pig of a Eskimo sled shed that isn’t for man power, we pull it with our side by side. How much was skillet asking for that and how big was it?

You need a hitch on your snowmobile, I have this same hitch on a 2007 and a 2019 yamaha phazer that also have a round rear bumper, they work good pulling a box full of hounds, should work good for your snowmobile and sled:

I think it’s 1.25 I don’t remember exactly but that hitch won’t fit

I did contact van amburg for options (they made my rear tunnel extension and bumper)

they didn’t have anything but did have some ideas, haven’t got a call back from the guy with the ideas lol

I was at Banks 2 weeks ago.  I saw at least 10 people out on the ice at Coulee Playland fishing all day long.  the next day (and I mean the very next day) the spot they were fishing on was 80% open water.  By the 2nd day it was 100% open in the area they were fishing on.  Temps were around freezing at night and in the upper 40's during the day.

I am not an ice fisherman, or an expert on Ice at all but it seems like that was pretty thin ice they were boring holes into to fish if it all was gone in 24-36 hours absent a heat wave.

I wanted to focus around China Bend up past Northport into Dead Mans Eddy area since that’s our back yard. The guide was thinking we would take off out of Kettle and go all the way up which is cool too. We’ll see what he says.

There’s a few spots that’ll get ya if you aren’t careful especially there at dead mans eddy, there’s a rock pile mid stream you need to stay right of

Right before that there a shallow spot sticking way out, so it’s a far left, then hard right, then around the rock pile, then stay left lol

What I do is make a track on GPS going upstream and follow that precisely coming back down the river, it’s better going upstream than down, you can really take your time going up and really read the river and mark the hazards.

There’s no way I’d launch then head downstream if I didn’t know the water well.

With a guide you’ll get a major shortcut to learning the hazards as they’ll point them all out

Good way to go really

I used to run a lot of rivers in jet boats, Clearwater, snake, Columbia spokane, kettle river all the way to Canada even did the gorge on the kettle

Some of those spots you can’t go anymore, due to rafters

I grew up boating Roosevelt, I knew it well enough to boat most of it in the moonlight, also had a printed map that showed all the depths similar to this online map, you might find this pretty handy: https://usa.fishermap.org/depth-map/columbia-river/#map

There are lots of areas to be careful of rocks, learn the main channel and its much safer, and you have to watch out for the whirlpools in the little dalles if you go through there during June runoff. One time we hit a whirlpool in June, my buddy driving got thrown out of the driver seat, I was able to grab the wheel, nobody got thrown out of the boat but we had a new respect for those whirlpools. If you ever got thrown out during June a whirlpool would suck you right down, the hole in some of those whirlpools is several feet wide during top runoff flows.

Roosevelt is an awesome water but repsect it, also brush up on the park service rules.

The boat side shifts under you while your body tries to go straight lol

Kinda like an earthquake I’d imagine

My buddy was lucky to not leave the boat, scared the dickens right out of us, yes, the boat turns, plus if its wide across you hit the other side hard.

The Dallas is an interesting place. one minute you're in 35 feet of water and the next you have a rock less than a foot under the boat.

If you are set on fishing right now you should be able to launch at Bradbery beach and cross to the next pens. Bradbery is still 3 feet above low water to launch.

You went thru the gorge! Riding or Driving!! What time of year?

When the lake is low, the river will be high.

To my knowledge we’re the only ones to make it both ways without totaling a boat

We were on the Pend Oreille river last year. We ran from Boundary dam to Metaline Falls and it got kinda pushy from the whirlpools before we went under the bridge. Good info guys, thanks.

I have seen some pretty mangled canoes from going thru it.
