Thought this one could be fun one.
What the biggest shoulder fired rifle you own and the biggest you have fired?
I own and hunt with a 458 Lott. The biggest I have fired is a 585 nyati my buddy owns.
-
505 Gibbs for me.

505 gibbs for me as well.
Love the big bores.
-
I've never left the 3's... Not sure I want to!
338wm fired (and own.) Edit... OOoooooo wait, I had a 45/70 Contender once for awhile... boy that thing kicked like a kangaroo on steroids!
Own a 375AI barreled action, but haven't built it yet.
-
Ruger ~ NO 1 ~ .458 WIN MAG other than that my 9.3X62. This doesn't count 144K in a Vulcan 20mm, Army days
-
Own ...300 win mag...it's on its way out.
Fired... Barrett 50
-
Guess I'm a bit weak, .375H&H. Personally, that was enough.

I hunt exclusively with a 375 Ruger nowadays.
The most powerful I’ve touched off, a 458 WM.
-
.338 Terminator isn't the biggest but it lays a good smackdown on both ends. ~100 grains of H1000 makes a good hole in the atmosphere 🤣
-
Own and hunt with .338 win mag
Did own and shot, and hunted with 416 Remington mag
-

OMIGOD, forgot about the 10ga I own. Bought a single shot from my dad for 50 bucks about 30 years ago. First time I shot it up against the front of a wooden shot bench nearly cracked my brain case.
-
This makes me laugh.....
Biggest fired is probably my 7mm Rem Mag. I have also shot a 10 gauge.
Biggest woned: I owned a 375 H&H AI for a dozen years. Saw the neighbor walking out the door with it and when I commented he said he was headed to the pawn shop. So, I ended up with a 375 H&H AI.
Here's the funny part:
1. I never shot it. It came with a bunch of ammo, but I never felt the need.
2. When I bought it, and when I subsequently sold it, I didn't know it was an Ackley Improved.
I sold it to a member on here, and a little while later he contacted me and said it was an AI.
He noticed that some of the ammo was AI, so he checked the bore. Sure enough... it's an AI. The barrel was never marked AI (bad gunsmithing practice).
I offered to buy it back, but he was good with it.
-
Got to shoot this a lot, free ammo too!
-
I shoot a 10 gauge a lot, don’t consider it a big gun. I even reload to feed it. As for finman’s pig photo, I’ve also fired thousands with one as well as a Maw Duce. Keep adding old Army M-79 40mm Blooper, hundreds down range as well.
-
Pellet gun, shoots 1300 ft per second. It's a nice 1
-

The biggest I've ever shot was a 20mm anti material rifle, don't recall the name of the thing. Other than it was huge.
The biggest I own is a 470NE and a 375 HH.
Worst kicking rifle, I ever owned, or shot was a Weatherby Mk 5 in 378 Weatherby Magnum. The recoil from that thing was absolutely insane.
-
Owned: 577/450
Fired: 50 BMG
-
Currently own: .300 Win Mag
Formerly owned/fired: Browning 1886 in .45/70 Govt. With the curved metal butt pad, it was a brutal beast to shoot.......think I went 9 rounds once.
-
Some good ones in there! I’ve watched videos and want to shoot a 20mm looks like a blast!

Biggest own - 458 Socom
Biggest shot - M1A1 Abrams 120mm smooth bore ;), okay technically not a rifle..... so it would be the Browning M2 .50 cal
-
Own: 300 WBY Mag
Shot: .50 Barrett
Kicked the most: 300 Wby Mag :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Bowling ball cannon. Shot old bowling balls 1/2 mile when loaded properly. Made from old oxygen tank, bowling balls bought at thrift shopes for virtually nothing.
-
My .50 muzzleloader fires the biggest projectile I’ve ever fired. I shot a .338 RUM. Biggest I’ve owned and fired is a .300 win mag. I shot a TC Encore with a 12 gauge Turkey barrel on it and, with a proper Turkey load, was the heaviest recoiling gun I’ve ever fired. I love the encore platform but I’ll never own a Turkey barrel for it.
-
I'm pretty sure carp said "shoulder" fired in his op.... :chuckle:
If we are going to go down the biggest rabbit hole... I've lite some fuses and pushed some buttons over the years.... :o :chuckle:

oops, missed the shoulder part, but definitely not illegal to own or shoot as a civilian.
-

Doesn’t change the diameter of the round for me😂 M320 40MM for shoulder fired.
-
Biggest fired, 450 Bushmaster
Own a 375 H&H.

I'll have to add LAW, shoulder fired can we say FUN
-
Ok, so if I had to be technical, the biggest shoulder-fired RIFLE I've shot was the 90mm Recoilless Rifle. I carried that beast for a year when I was a PFC and SPC. Live firing that thing was a religious experience. Also the reason I had to retake my hearing test 3 times to pass my physical for Ranger School. :chuckle: :chuckle:

I guess diameter matter's. :chuckle:
But there's really no recoil on those.....so does it really count. :o
-
.416 Barrett and .50 BMG.
-
40 Mike Mike rounds are fun but for sure not hard on the shoulder.
I owned a 50bmg for a few years was a lot of fun. Wasn’t bad but on recoil with the huge brake the concussion was the bad part. Also I thought I was going to go blind after shooting a barrett with the dang triangle brake prone. The amount of crap that blew back in my face was astronomical lol. Even with glasses it wasn’t very kind on the eyes.

Bowling ball cannon. Shot old bowling balls 1/2 mile when loaded properly. Made from old oxygen tank, bowling balls bought at thrift shopes for virtually nothing.
That sounds crazy ! Propellant ? I see the old time cannons that fired 4 and 5" balls and the barrels are a couple inch thick walls. Oxygen tank ???
-
All these big guns, but how well do we shoot them away from a bench or a lead sled?
-
My 300 RUM shoots great
Kicks light
I use a bipod
I agree its not my walking around gun
-

used black powder and the large oxygen tanks from welding sets. Cut the outlet end off, drill a fuse hole on the other end. My brother made a couple of em, not sure where he got the plans. Fun to shoot and then go retrieve the bowling balls and shoot again. I think there are plans on line and actually think he use Pyrodex powder. Darn smokey when they go off
-
Biggest I own, 350 rem mag. Biggest I've shot, .477NE. Let my 115 pound son shoot that .477, he didn't think it was much fun after the second barrel sounded off on him. Learned the back trigger first method real quick!
-
All these big guns, but how well do we shoot them away from a bench or a lead sled?
You might be surprised
-
@jasnt, not much surprises me much.
-

Indeed. I did a fun scenario dangerous game shoot in Libby a few years back with a 450 Dakota. Moving cape buffalo targets, run and shoot relays, charging Lions, etc. The big bore shot well. Never used a lead sled on a bench, and bench shooting is brutal on the shoulder. I'll take field shooting over Bench shooting anytime!
The 450 Dakota spits out a 500 grain bullet at 2400 fps with recoil about 3x a 30.06.
-
Also- worst recoil experience I had was when the scope smacked the brim of my baseball hat. It felt like i had been smacked in the head with an encyclopedia!
-
I thought encyclopedia's were only online now :chuckle:
-
Fired: 40 Mike Mike M203.
Owned: 50BMG
-
Fun to read some of your responses. Go ahead and put me in the wimp category. The hardest kicking I've shot was my old man's 7mm rem mag and that wasn't a real bad experience. Biggest I own is a 308.
-
Biggest fired-45/70 falling block or SW500 which didn't recoil nearly as bad as the SW 360 loaded with full-house .357 158gr mag cartridges.
Biggest owned-I guess my Tikka 300WSM or 12ga with turkey loads.
-
Biggest owned: 6.5 PRC
Biggest fired: 50bmg
-
Owned - 8mm rem magnum in Remington Custom KS < 7 lbs, No break. It’s now a 7mmSTW
Fired - 500 nitro in a double, two different 50 BMGs, both had massive breaks. 460 Weatherby no break.
The 460 was the least comfortable to shoot. I only fired it twice from a standing position. I think it would be rough from a bench.
-
Most powerful that I’ve owned or fired would probably be my .375 ruger. Gets a little snappy sending 300 grainers near 2700fps starts getting painful after 10 rounds.
My old .45-70 with full house loads and 10 gauge with 3.5” slugs would be runners up, no longer own them though.
-
Own: .35 Whelen
Fired: Same
I'm a recoil wimp. I watched a guy shoot a .500 Nitro Express at the range and it hurt.
-
Largest I've shot is a 325 WSM, largest I own is 7mm Rem Mag. I am not into big guns, I like to shoot too much.
-
I’d have to say the worst recoil I’ve ever felt was from my weatherby pa 459 shooting a 2oz turkey load at 1375fps. Even hurt my trigger finger 😂
-
Fired and owned, 50 BMG. Right under 18#’s
-
By far the worst recoil was when I shot a friends T/C Contender, 14in barrel in .45/70. OUCH!!!!!!!!!!
-
Biggest shoulder fired 90mm Recoilless, 50BMG, M203 40mm grenade launcher
Largest owned .458 Lott, .458 Win Mag, .416 Rigby, .375 H&H Mag. I prefer to shoot the .458's and .416 off sticks. The .375 is a soft shooter so I shoot it on the bench as well.
-
I should have added N Brakes on any of the ones I own.
-
With a name like rigby I would expect you to be a collector of large bores!!!
The 585 577 and 460 wby are all shoulder crackers if not tamed down well. My lott is middle of the road no brake but heavy enough to not beat a guy up to bad.
I love me some small caliber rifles. That I can shoot all day and spend tons of time with. Those are great for 99% of the hunting I do. How ever something about a 500-1000 grain chunk of metal making that huge thud when it hits just makes me smile ear to ear.
