Title: Cape needed
Post by: Tball77 on December 27, 2022, 01:12:51 PM
This feels like a long shot but do any of you know where I can purchase a bull elk cape?  Here's the kicker though.  The bull my friend shot is somewhat non typical and really unique.  The hair under the antlers was very curly and different that what I have ever seen and would like to replicate it if possible.  If any of you taxidermists can help, please send me a PM.  I will also need someone to mount it.

I have a cape from a 6x7 I shot in Idaho Sept 9 of this year. Been frozen since that time. Not tanned yet

Almost every bull I've seen bigger than a rag had hair like you're describing around the peticles. That shouldn't be an issue. Also, most taxi's I know have extra elk hides or can easily obtain them.

get the best cape you can find and super glue some horse hair to the base, then curl it with a curling iron.

Another thing to think about is if it's a Roosevelt or Rocky Mountain, you're probably going to want the same.

It was a rosy.  Definitely want to keep it correct.

I say put a blacktail cape on it and say it's a big benchleg.

The pic you showed is typical Western Washington Roosevelt. Most bulls I get in are curly like that up top, especially mid season bulls. The face of that bull looks pretty sunken in though! Hoof rot on him? Good luck in your pursuit for a cape.....Im all out of spare capes for the rosies or I would offer one to ya.
