Hey HuntWA, I have two more days of duck/geese hunting under my belt after this week. I have come to the conclusion that I need some geese decoys and a call, are there good brands to look for? I’m thinking about getting six - twelve floaters because the pond I am hunting is about 60x60 yards.
I was thinking about setting up the geese decoys and then a patch of duck decoys up wind of them.

Lots of decoys on Craigslist right now, you could find some serviceable dekes with out having to buy new. Probably get more bang for you buck, floaters and full bodies.

If the ducks are already using the pond, you could easily decoy them with milk jugs painted black.
Every time I have looked, people are asking new price for pounded on decoys from 10 years ago. I would get a dozen Herters or whatever is on closeout, should be some you could get for cheap if you check all the stores online.
Or, for even less, invite someone that has decoys.

Get a dozen wigeon and you'll be set for anything.

For years I hunted a small oxbow on a small river. While I have more decoys than most normal people, it depended on how many birds were in the area. Sometimes 4-6 floating geese alone and sometimes I would use 1-2 doz outlaws along the bank with them. A few ducks never hurt, 6-12 maybe, but remember, ducks will come to geese but not always the other way around. My experience anyhow. If your goose hunting, you don't need duck decoys. As far as a call is concerned, get a dvd called "Bad Grammer" It will walk you through using a short reed goose call. Many good ones out there. Bill Saunders, Tim Grounds, Fred Zink and others. I collect the dang things and that's one of my other bad habits:rolleyes:. I also make my own. An easy-to-use flute call is the old Big River originally made by Mick Lacey and produced by another company now. I've killed many geese with one.

I'd often run about 6 floaters and always carry a call.

Rogers Sporting Goods has some good sales going on decoys right now. If you spend a $100 or more, it's free shipping.

Looks like Cabela's is having a clearance sale as well.
