Looking to upgrade jeep wranglers.
Any experience with them? Still trying to figure out whats good/bad, and read a bit about flickering and radio disturbance.
-
They are awesome, so much better than even the upgraded regular ones.
I've used these and have been happy, not sure if they fit your rig or not. You might need to order a larger dust cap as well, not sure about Jeeps.

I changed the headlights on my Frontier to these:
KATANA Fanless 9007 LED Headlight Bulbs | 12000LM 60W Wireless HB5 All-in-One Conversion Kit | PHI Chips Super Bright 6500K Xenon White Halogen Replacement $32 on Amazon.
I know there was about a year of try and fail before the Frontier Forum determined wich sets worked best for the Frontier.
You might want to search around in the Jeep Forums for the versions they recommend.
-
Be warned, they suck if it is snowing hard. They don't get hot enough to melt it off the lenses.
x2 on the Katans. I have them in several rigs.
No mater which bulb you get, make sure and orient them the right way. Otherwise they will not throw the beams correctly..
-
Are led lights a straight swap?
Nothing special needed to put them in?
Thanks

I put the kc headlights in my 16. I didn’t have any radio interference. They are expensive lights and bright as hell. You get what you pay for. There are a lot of lights out there for the jeeps in the 200 range and they just don’t last. The one thing you’re gonna wanna buy is the lights that have a heating element in the lens. As the led lights do not put off heat. I was coming over blewett early one morning in the dark and it was dumping wet snow. They covered up in a hurry and the only lights I had were from the guy behind me. But what ever you decide do not go cheap.

Depends on the rig. Some of them need a ballast too. Should be info out on the web on your specific make and what others have done.
My daughters 2001 Ford Escape does not like to turn high beams off if you have the factory fog lights on, even with adding a ballast.

Go online and get ahold of Headlight Revolution. Call them and they will help out with what you want to do and will provide the parts and expertise needed. I switched out my headlights on my 2015 3/4 ton GMC and have been more than satisfied. Plus what they sold my had lifetime replacement warranty, so i just get ahold of them and they send me replacement components.

Are you considering installing an entire reflector assembly or just an LED bulb in an incandescent assembly?
LEDs do not work in incandescent assemblies.
No matter what the vendor or others say about how amazing they are, they're not.
LEDs scatter badly, the whiter the light, the worse they are in rain and fog(trust me, yellow tint is much better than the white/blue that everyone is trying to copy), and they just suck for other drivers who have to share the road with you.
You'd be much better off with a quality incandescent bulb if that's what you're thinking.

I don't know what they're like now but the headlights on my 08 Rubicon sucked something fierce! I don't remember the name of the company I got them from but their kit replaced the whole headlight, they weren't LED bulbs, and the part of the wiring harness that plugged in to the headlamps back to the part of the wiring harness that section plugged into. It made a, huge, difference over the factory headlights.
My daughter has a 2017 MKC and the headlights aren't very good so I'll have to look into that Headlight Revolution place and see if there's an easy fix to replace the bulbs with something better.

Properly installed and adjusted, my experience is that LED bulbs have much better beam control than halogen. Glare and scatter were noticeably reduced. Anyone that has messed with LED flashlights has probably noticed that that the beam has very distinct edges as opposed to incandescent bulbs that scatter much more.
Proper adjustment of the reflector as well as orientation of the LED bulb in one truck was much more critical than with halogen bulbs.
I've tried premium halogen bulbs and LED and the LED provided vastly superior lighting for night driving under all conditions. I can't remember a time where I wished I had halogens. The LEDs provided better distance lighting forward as well as side lighting. Both my daughter and wife commented on how much better they can see with the LEDs.
One one truck, I had to simply adjust the assembly to maintain the same height on the beam cutoff, easy to do against a garage door. Measure the top of the beam pattern with the stock bulbs, swap them and then adjust the assembly for the same beam height.
On the other truck, the beam was very sensitive to the position of the bulb. I installed them, then rotated the bulb until I found the best position for a crisp horizontal cutoff at the top of the beam and then adjusted for beam cutoff height.
Your results may vary, I can only speak for the two trucks I have messed with. I also did not experiment with higher wattage halogens that require rewiring and additional relays due to the excessive current draw. I compared LEDs with stock halogens as well as premium halogens that are compatible with stock wiring and relays.
The snow melting does seem to make logical sense, but I haven't experienced that issue and drove through a ton of snow every year with them. I haven't noticed any snow or ice accumulation on the headlights.

Your garage door aiming is the same as saying your shotgun with an IC choke tube shoots the same as your turkey choke at 3 yards.
There are mountains of research that say you should never put LEDs in incandescent housings.
It's mostly a Toyota thing trying for the blue tint look.

Should be mandatory reading for anyone considering LED bulbs.

Why? Less light from the LEDs is going above the beam cutoff than with the halogens. I have had zero people flash me and have seen the truck head on as my wife usually drives it. If it was an isssue, it would be something you could address by adjusting the headlight assembly just as the instructions state and would be standard practice for any change in lamp type.
The beam cutoff is super crisp, way more crisp than the halogens that didn't really have a cutoff as much as they just faded off at some point.
The headlights I get blinded by are the guys who put leveling kits, lifts and/or big tires and then don't adjust their headlights. You can almost guess what the rig look like before it gets to you.
There is a reason why headlight assemblies have adjustment screws on them. https://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/a257/how-to-adjust-lights/

Lots of reviews on the Wrangler forums.
Made a word of difference on my 06 LJ. Cutoff is very defined. Good value.

For a halogen to LED swap I would go full housing vs just replacing the bulb if you could swing it. :twocents:

Lots of good info, thanks all
Yes, mostly looking at just replacing the bulb, not whole headlight.. not willing to spend $600-800 on headlights.....thats crazy talk. :chuckle:
I still have to read all the links, but im getting more confused as I look into this. My current halogens suck, can barely tell they are on sometimes while driving. Just want a bit more light.
My 07 chevy pu classic body style has stock headlights, by far the best lights I have EVER had on a vehicle. hmmmm
-
Buy some LED bulbs from Amazon, swap them in 10 minutes. If you don't like them, swap them back and return them.
Make sure your lenses aren't all fogged over, if they are you'll need to restore them first or it won't make much difference what bulbs you have.

Changed low beams on the wife's 08 suburban. Just the bulbs. Huge upgrade.
Have changed the bulbs on 4 rigs. No regrets. Way better. I would not worry about !enses.

I can't tell if this is a joke after reading all the evidence against LEDs in halogen housings or just wanton ignorance and a real desire to have less effective lighting and annoy and endanger other drivers.

Please change the whole unit.
Set up wrong these things are hazardous to other traffic around you.
I drive truck and most of us wish they were never invented since nobody can take the time to adjust them properly.

I am a CDL holder and drove for 12 years, I know all about oncoming headlights. I do not like being blinded any more than you. I can handle setting them up.

The joke is referencing online petitions by a thinly veiled group trying to get their competitors products banned as "evidence".
Just because someone goes online and says it's "improper" doesn't make it so. I didn't see where anybody explained how a tight beam properly adjusted is dangerous, in fact it would be safer by the very definition they quote. I did see references to replacing bulbs with massively over wattage bulbs that admittedly overheat lenses and require rewiring and new relays as the proper way to do it.
If you want to follow the advice of someone trying to sell you something without even exploring alternate ideas, that's your choice. The OP asked and several people gave him real world feedback.

What year jeep? 88 to mid 2000's are known for being dim. First thing is to upgrade the wiring. Google it. Made a difference in my Xj.
-
Buy a Ford with LEDs.
Level it.
Hook a heavy trailer on it.
Blind the Toyota's.
You'll never go back.
(I've had a CDL for 36 years)
-
I've thrown LED bulbs into 5-6 vehicles. I aim them on the same garage wall I aim my other headlights. I love them.
Disclaimer: I've never done it to a Toyota. That would be terrible.

Forget the headlights.
Slap a light bar on and blind everybody.
That's always my plan. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Don't forget to weight down the rear of the truck.
This is really easy on an F-150.

Greatest fear in raising a daughter is the possibility of her bringing some guy home who has LED headlights

It's already done on a Tacoma.
Flat, weak springs from the factory....Pretty sure they got recalled, didn't they?
Set the trend for the Carolina Squat look.

thinkingman,
Guessing here, but pretty sure your stance is against ALL LED/xenon type headlights because they are a bright white light.
Give it a few more years and you will be hardpressed to find incandescent in most vehicles on the road. I don't like the bright white lights coming at me either, but thats where its headed, LED's are the future of lighting. If ya cant beat em, join em.
-
I tried led bulbs and actually agree with thinkingman, the light was bright but not directed well so couldn't see any better at all. Also be aware that alot of newer vehicles with a can bus electrical system will have faults and fail to correct with led or hid bulbs.

There are cars and trucks with properly engineered LED and HID reflector systems that work really well and are not blinding or offensive to other drivers.
Unfortunately, there are drivers who really want to go for the LED look and don't care how their choices affect other drivers, even with evidence that whiter light is less effective in rain/snow/fog, that's the ones I rail against.
It's kind of like gun safety...Saying 'I'll handle a firearm however I want so long as I don't get injured...Screw the rest of you'.

This thread got my interest because my wife's odyssey had awful headlights when we bought it and even replacing them with the ultra sylvania were only marginally better. I was driving it one night recently and had to check that they were even on.
I picked up a set of LEDs from Amazon and can't believe the difference. Way safer for her to drive now that she can see at night. They cut off where her old lights cut off so I don't see any issues with blinding oncoming drivers.
Crazy part of my story is I ordered them late morning and they were delivered and I installed them that night.
