Title: Hunt consultants good or bad?
Post by: Rufenit on January 09, 2023, 06:34:20 PM
I've been hunting the state of Washington for over 40 years. I’m at a point in life where I’m tired of waiting on our draw system to give me an opportunity at a quality animal. Over the last several years I’ve been lucky enough to venture off into, Idaho, Colorado, Montana and Oregon. As with most states, they with the exception of Idaho are all draw and with the better units going to those with the most points built up. Being 55 years old it’s inevitable  that I only have so many quality hunts left to where I can really work hard for them.

I have been building points in a few state and currently have 3 deer points in colorado, 3 deer and antelope in Wyoming and 4 deer and 3 elk in Oregon. I know it’s human nature for no one wanting to give their preferred units and i respect that. I have been researching for hours upon hours, trying to figure which units to go for and how many points (years)I’m going to need  to draw. I was winding if anyone has used any of the hunt consultants like GOHUNT or Huntin fool. Any thought or advice would be appreciated.

Doesn’t sound like you have enough points anywhere to concern yourself with ever having enough points to get much more than a general type tag with points.

Idaho is pointless random draw, so your on even footing there.
Nevada draws are like Washington so you have a chance every year there.
Wyoming has a small amount of the tags in most units go to random, so there is a slight chance there.

In my opinion Wyoming general is way better than almost any elk tag Washington has. You could maybe have enough elk points for Wyoming general in 5 to 10 years. Swing for the fence hoping for random every year and then buy a point each year.
Do the same in Nevada, and Idaho draws, and buy general tags in Idaho and Put in for the Montana combo tags and go hunt as often as you can.

I don’t think you have enough points or enough time on the clock to worry about consultants. Maybe if you buy points till your 70, and then get a consultant.  Or maybe get a consultant to set you up with a NewMexico landowner tag.

I agree, I would be looking into landowner tags if that's in the budget.  Some states have outfitter tags as well.

go hunt would be a good investment just to get a realistic grasp on what you can draw. I would avoid the huntn fool types of consultants. I blame them for the draw systems being overwhelmed in all the western states lol. They did a great job marketing the idea of drawing dream tags to the point it is not attainable for most people at this stage in the game. They have to keep people in the game to stay in business but in reality they broke most western states draw systems. They were never made to handle applications from hunters in all 50 states.  Get go hunt or something similar so you can easily get odds. I would focus on general tags(or low point le) for just a few states that you enjoy hunting. I think if you did the math you could spend a little more on landowner tags and go hunting sooner vs applying in a bunch of western states year after year after year. I was doing multiple states for mountain goat and soon realized I would actually be better off saving the money and getting a tag through a guide. I am 55 also and feel like I wasted money putting in all over for mountain goat after I took a sober look at the odds. I just put in for goat in my home state now .

I don’t know if it’s still going but try using my email if you sign up for gohunt.
They had it so it saved you 50.00 on your membership and it gives me 50 if they are still running it.

I can find you some hunts I know in the States a lot of times if you get a bow tag it’s OTC and rifle it’s draw unfortunately and if you are willing to cross the borders either one you can get tags and book your hunt through an outfitter if you have any questions call me at 3528728243 my name is Joshua Godfrey
