Title: Reviews: Cabelas Big Horn III
Post by: mburrows on January 10, 2023, 10:41:46 AM: Kind of a hind sight post but curious if anybody has any experience with a Cabelas Big Horn III? I picked one up from a friend at a good price. Includes stove, tent, floor and vestibule.

- How easy is it to set up solo?
- How does it do in the wind/snow?
- Any modifications/additions I should consider looking at?
- Anything else?

Post by: hughjorgan on January 10, 2023, 12:00:12 PM: I have been using this tent for a while now. It is very easy to set up solo. It doesn’t take long to setup at all. Keeps you warm and dry in the snow and wind. Tons of guy lines to keep the tent from going any where in the wind. You can fit three cots in the tent. This tent has been great and should work well for you too.

Post by: Stein on January 10, 2023, 12:53:48 PM: I love ours, it's fairly easy to set up solo. In wind it's bombproof and I usually don't even set all the guy lines. I have only had light snow on it, if it was heavy snow, I would probably be brushing it off like any other tent.

I would get a roof protector if you are going to use a stove. Other than that, I use it as is.

Forgot to mention the roof protector, one was included in the package so good to go there.

Don’t actually have the tent yet, I’ll grab next time I’m back in western WA but excited to take it out this spring.

Post by: northwesthunter84 on January 10, 2023, 04:25:01 PM: I’ve had mine since 2013, took a beating in Wyoming a couple years ago and did not miss a beat. The only complaint anyone has had would be some way to damper the side vents. 40+mph winds at 20 degrees get a little drafty. Make sure the stove pipe is tall so you don’t burn the tent. Also use some aqua seal on the stitching. I’m redoing the tape this year on the inside, just going to seal both sides. 20 min setup solo is as fast as I can go. But that’s the tent and vestibule. The only thing weight comparable would be a relite material tent from Montana Canvas. Maybe someday I’ll up grade the car tent.

Post by: Stein on January 10, 2023, 07:15:26 PM: Like any tent, they get awful warm in the summer. We had it out for 4th of July one time and the thermometer on the bunk read 139. :chuckle:

When you have the floor flap zipped open for the stove, make sure there aren't any air gaps between the floor and the ground, mice tend to find them and crash your party. I usually just put wood around the opening to hold it down against the dirt if the ground isn't flat.
