This year Kinda got a late start but here we go
I got 12 boxes out in a new area on Saturday and figure I’ll extend the line every weekend and just check during the week , heading back down after setting the last and low and behold my first box had a juvenile male in it after about 7 hours of being set ! Fast forward to Tuesday night check and pulled 2 more off the line

Fred you trapping this year ?
Nope, I can barely walk at all and bending over or kneeling down is out of the question. Trapping and most hunting is out until I get the knees replaced. Hopefully this summer.
-
Awesome! Marten trapping is a lot of work. Looking forward to following along this year.

Love the tail swipe in the snow.
I ran across tracks in the snow in the early 90’s while snowshoeing up boulder creek in the Northcascades long before they were getting any press.
A guy I served with in the Navy saw two fighting one summer on the trail that goes around Baker lakes south side before my tack sighting.

Nice job so far 👍 I like following this thread thanks for posting. Hopefully That’s my next addition to the trap line marten just a lot further than my regular spots

Well ran the line and only picked up one small one but got out 8 more running pole setups out and found where a Fisher is running so there’s another obstacle to battle
-
Well I should of had 12 marten but 6 boxes ended up being frozen rock solid and the traps unsprung and pulled outta the box and all the bait eaten and marten tracks all over but ended up with 6 today

Well I’m done with the marten for the year. I trapped them for a few weeks and ended with 8. My buddy is still trapping them and is at 19. I think he’s going to pull traps this weekend. You’re having a great season!
-
2 more
-
One more today plus a bobcat ate all but the head of another😡
Started doing a new box setup in the big trees where there’s not many pecker poles for sets

What percentage do you loose to predators?

Not great, but not terrible.

Forgive my ignorance about martins. My only knowledge has come from watching those Alaskan trapping shows. Most of the martins they show are black or almost black with a little white. All of those shown in this thread are reddish? Is that a regional difference in color?
-
Marten in the norther territories are bigger and darker for sure kinda of a dark chocolate. Here we have pacific marten which are typically a little smaller but I’ve caught them light and dark and some have white chests but most have the peach throat patches
