im looking for some good fishing at the end of a good hike any ideas :dunno:

i bought a book a couple years ago and it was an alpine lakes wilderness fishing guide...good book to have.
they have some of those type books at barnes and noble.

I don't know how "good" the fishing is anymore, but I fished Lower Lena Lake and Lake Constance years ago with some success. Mostly brookies. That trail up to Lake Constance is no joke. We went for a few days so the packs were full. My back hurts just thinking about it. It's a good day hike though. :twocents:

just got back from lena not one fish for the whole group and the upper lena is still froze over :bash:im still sore with not one fish to show for it ...thanks though :hello:

Well that sucks. :chuckle: The only reason I even fished Lena was it was a last backpacking trip with my Dad before headed off to basic training. He was a volunteer ranger and was heading up to do some trail work. Good times.

I'm heading to Lena in two weeks...hope at least one fish bites. Think the Upper lake will be thawed by then or is the ice thick still? What was the trail condition like to Upper?

If you are up for it then the best fun around is the Hidden lakes in the Pasayton wilderness. Enter from Iron gate or Harts pass then come out over Billy goat pass that way you get to see a lot of country. Bring a camera and spare shoes. There are lots of places to fish and you may consider the fish as food you don't have to pack in. Have a great week. :cmp1:

I like the pasayten idea thanks im hunting up there this year.,AS for the upper lena there was one little spot thawed the trail is pretty easy half the way the other half was kinda steep the last quarter was snow with one pretty good creek crossing but there was about sx girls up there when we got there if that tells you anything.

Does the Capital Forest have sidewalks. I would hate to see anyone get in over their head. :rolleyes: Seriously If you do go to the pasayton and go by way of Harts Pass then get ahold of me and I'll tell ya a tale of a little known Pass that harbors a few Mule deer that isn't to far in.

As a kid my dad and me did a drop camp a few times during the summer to "Hidden Lakes". Lots of fish!! There used to be a forest service cabin in there and also an "A-Frame" down by the lower lake.
I think a summer drop camp with an outfitter is some of the most fun you can have with your kids and grandkids. There are plenty of other lakes in the pasayten that you can do the drop camp thing at.
There are tons of fish in the lakes and by letting the mules and pack horses haul your gear in, you can have a pretty delux camp. The wife and I are planning a trip with the kids and grandkids next summer. it should be alot of fun.

I have done a couple of just those in montana Kent Hunter. Those lakes are full of great trout and can easily catch 100 a day if you wanted to. Good times!!!
