My friend Eric and I went out this past weekend to fill his Sherman tag. His weapon of choice was a 30-30 passed down to him from his Great Grandfather. Eric was looking for a boar 6 ft or better.
We passed on 2 bears Saturday, getting to within 30 yards of both of them. One was jet black, the other a pretty blonde/chocolate bear.
Sunday morning we saw 2 bears and passed on both, getting to within 10 yards of one and 60 yards of the other.
Sunday evening we watched a nice looking bear come out of the timber and start to feed on an open hillside. After judging him for about an hour we decided he was a shooter. We snuck in to within 70 yards, making sure Eric could get a good hit on the bear with his open sighted 30-30. One shot was all it took. It was one of the cleanest kills I've ever seen. Walking up to the bear, we realized he was a little bigger than we thought. It was a boar and squared and even 6'2".
Here are some pictures of the bears we pased on.

Awesome work. 10 yards is pretty close for a bearski. Looks like a nice boar! Cool to take it with open sights/30-30. I have one of them too, I use it as a brush gun if I need to. Grats to ya both.
-
Congrats , nice bear !
-
Great footage, super nice bear. A couple of those bears you passed on were very respectable bears. Congrats to both of you and thanks for posting the photos and the video!!!!
-
nice video - very well done to both the camera man and hunter.
-
Excellent! First, I must congratulate you guys on passing on the other bears. Second, your style of hunt'in is only one type popular but its my favorite! Up close & personal w/a levergun (I'm not opinionated am I?). Actually, I respect those who can judge & hit a target at long range. Looks like the gun was a Winnie, right?. Hope to get my Marlin 35 Rem out of the shop by 1 Aug!!!!!!!!!
-
Nice looking Bear.

Nice footage, I say you passed on some nice bears, Way to go. Mark

My wife killed two with her lever action 30-30, but together they don't come close to that one. Again, great job!

Very nice bear and cool story to take it with Grampa's gun. The pic of that second bear you passed, that's a dandy bear in my book.

Now that’s a true trophy in anyone’s book. I hope that your friend can pass that rifle down to the next generation someday and continue its legacy.

Good job. I really enjoyed the video.
The way he rolled down after the shot, the ground must have been steeper than what it appeared in the video. Very cool.

Great video , I love it when they get to rolling like that

Congrats!
Great post. Love the vid.
What make/ model is the 30-30?
I've got a really cool OLD winchester model 64 WCF 30-30 that was handed down to me from my grandfather. Special rifle!
-
Thanks for the post. I have watched the video about 10 times and emailed it to everyone I know. :chuckle: I am so pumped up for August I may have to go scouting again this weekend. I hardly ever see bears down here but I am going to hit it hard this year and see if I can figure these animals out. Got my calls from Rick and cant wait to start causing some noise pollution in the woods.
-
That was fantastic video thanks for sharing. Great footage...

That's the exact same model.
We pulled this out of the gutpile. We also found bullet fragments in the neck meat.

I wondered if you guys were members on here. I had seen this video a while back. You definitely get into the bears.

That's my spring hunt from 2002 in the Dayton unit. It was a solo hunt, so I had to video, call and shoot all by myself. Sometimes things work perfectly.
-
Good job and nice video.

Sweet videos! We've tried for years to make some good ones. I have about 6 of them but they are all so so (shakey camera, bad angles, etc). Kudos to the good work!
