Buy tickets online for the WA Rocky Mtn Bighorn raffle.
Only 160 tickets have be sold as of today.
Go to www.wafnaws.com
If you do not have a Paypal account, it takes about 1 minute to register.
Units open this year include Wenaha, Black Butte, Tucannon & Hall Mtn.
-
Serious question for you, I am very sceptical of sites that prompt you to PayPal, as this one does. How do you know if its secure and or legit? TIA
Not that I don't trust you Ramslam, just a question ;)

Those units would be the hunt of a lifetime. By the way phool, I have used paypal forever. It's very secure.
-
I do to Pope, just never seen this site before and wanted to make sure.
-
I paid on the site last year for the raffle and everything went smooth.
-
Just bought a few Ramslam, thanks for the update.
I paid on the site last year for the raffle and everything went smoot
If everything went smooth, why were we not hunting sheep last year. ;)
-
We chose Paypal because of its popularity and reputation for being a leader in e-commerce security. I purchased the very first ticket once it was up and going with my personal credit card. I sure hope its secure!
Thanks for your support of Rocky Mtn bighorns in Washington.
-
when will the draw be held?
-
I noticed there is no date or deadline to purchase
-
This is sure is a great way to have an awsome chance at filling your slam
count me in.
-
Thank You Ramslam -
Do they take all of the information from Paypal to notify the purchaser or do I need to submit additional information?
-
The deadline looks like August 3, 2009 from the bottom of the downloadable flyer. Doesn't say when they will hold the drawing.

I don't get this. Is this up and above the raffle tag offered by WDFW? And if so, how does this org. get these tags?
-
Been wondering this about the Rocky sheep draw...do they publish anywhere approximately how many raffle tags are sold? You can get that info for the WDFW draws, but haven't seen it for the WAFNAWS draw.
-
Its the same as the WDFW draw WAFNAWS just does the advertising
This is how much they made on last years raffle...$101,250
I guess you could divide by X and get the number.
-
Are you sure? I thought the WDFW proceed numbers were just for the Cali tag.
-
They list ROCKY in a separate column :dunno:
http://wdfw.wa.gov/wlm/game/hunter/auction_summary.htm
-
Looks like you're right...about $20k raised for the Cali sheep raffle, and $101K for the Rocky sheep raffle. At least that's how it was in 2006.
-
100k is alot of tickets IMO.
-
The Cali bighorn raffle and Rocky Mountain bighorn raffle are not the same. The WDFW handles the Cali raffle and the Rocky Mt. raffle is conducted in partnership with the WA state chapter of the Foundation for North American Wild Sheep and the WDFW. The Rocky Mt. raffle tag is only for the Blue Mountain sheep units while the Cali tag is for the rest of the state's sheep units, but not the Blues.

I usually take it as a donation to the organization. Sent a check and never even hear back if it is recieved or anything. Hell, don't even know if a legit raffle is held, but it was for a good cause. At least I assumed it went to a good place. I guess I dodn't even know that. I'm niave and trusting though. :) Thanks for the link Ramslam. Seems like I get mailings from many of the other states, but always support this one.
-
Given that the WDFW site lists the Rocky raffle through 2006, I'm guessing that WAFNAWS got the raffle sometime after that?
Assuming that's the case, I'll go back to my original question...anyone know how many tickets they sell? It won't have an effect on whether I buy tickets, as I also view it as a donation. Just interesting to compare demand across the different species.
-
One in 4050 is the winner. :) (I think the fee was $25.) but then again don't you get a 5th one free if you buy four.......or I could be thinking of another raffle.....
-
Correct boneaddict. WAFNAWS (in cooperation with WDFG) sells between $80,000 and $110,000 in tickets each year as of 2006(first year of the raffle). That's about 3000-4500 tickets. Washington state law forbids the buying up on tickets(ex-$25 each or 5 for$ 100)The money raised goes back to promoting Rocky Mt bighorn sheep in WASH. Not to the general fund. This raffle tag enables the hunter to hunt any of the open units listed on the flier for an extended season unlike a general draw tag hunter who is limeted to only one area. The raffle hunter can hunt one unit one day then a different the next.
By far this is the best bighorn tag in the state and the only way to get it is to purchase raffle tickets through WAFNAWS. Thank Ramslam and WAFNAWS for convincing the game commission to let the tag be raffled not auctioned.
Oh by the way, I love people that dont trust raffles because that just increases my odds!

I havent looked at this thread today so sorry for not responding to questions.
The drawing is conducted the first Wed. of August (August 5 this year). WAFNAWS sells the tickets and WDFW does the ol raffle barrel roll at one of their offices. A WDFW employee (director, commissioner, bio etc) draws the winning ticket and one alternate.
As printed on the raffle flyer we do not send "ticket stubs" in return and the reason is simply the cost. WANAWS spends from $5000-$10,000 per year to promote this tag and we would prefer to save the expense of mailing stubs back. If you ever want to know if your name is in the raffle barrel, feel free to email wafnaws@hotmail.com. We keep an excel list of everyone that's purchased tickets. It can get very busy the last weeks leading up to the drawing so please be patient but you will get a response.
Starbailey explained how the marketing works--its similar to any of the auction tags. WAFNAWS gets 10% of gross sales to promote the tag and 90% goes back to WDFW for the "Rocky bighorn sheep fund". This raffle actually started in 2005 at the request of the WAFNAWS board of directors. Since then, over $330,000 has been raised for Rocky Mtn bighorn projects in our state such as disease research at WSU and once the fence is repaired on the Tucannon, a transplant of sheep to that herd.
Sales in 2008 totaled ~$89,000 so roughly 4500 tickets.
Hope that helps.
Glen

I dont have a pic on this computer of the 2008 drawing so here is one of 2007.
-
And from 2006
-
Thanks ramslam! Keep up the great work - that's a great cause.
-
I wish that they would put a cap on the number of raffle tags that one person could purchase. It seems that a lot of these raffle tags are turning into "auction" tags with the wealthy purchasing 100's of tags. Still, the money goes to a great cause but the odds are definately scewed. :twocents:
-
Well it only takes one ticket to win plus it not only about the win it is what the cause is for. That money will help increase the population on Rockies and then or odds increase when the WDFW decide to give us more permits. Money means more sheep for us poor people to get a chance to draw.

I am with video on this one!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I also agree. It only takes one ticket to win......But when you have one ticket and Joe Moneybags bought 200 tickets.....well you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure that one out.
Like I said earlier, the money goes to a great cause.
-
I am not a fan of this raffle. I am not sure if there is a true cost savings or increased revenue generated for the state. For these two reasons I question allowing WAFNAWS to run this raffle. The do appear to be making a fair attempt to get notification out about this tag. The first time they did not seem to do to good a job IMO.
My opinions could be tainted by the fact that I cannot find out where WAFNAWS stood on closing Swakane to sheep hunting this year.
-
Of course we are all upset of the closing of Swakane this year by the Department, that is who makes those decisions. The dept regional bio was concerned on the number of bighorns killed on the hwy and suggested the closing until the fence is built. Would it be any benefit to WAFNAWS if they closed the unit or any other for that matter?
WAFNAWS has donated a lot of time and money(along with other conservation organizations) to the swakane fencing project but these projects take time. It should be underway soon if not already.
WAFNAWS is here to help bighorn sheep populations in WA. That will in turn help everybody have a better opportunity to view or hunt them. Most of us joined because we had drawn a tag and fell in love with the bighorns and wanted to give something back. The closing of a bighorn unit effects me because I donate my time(and money) to help increase bighorn numbers and if it closed we missed our goal. We are only one small group and it takes a lot of cooperation by many to get a project like this approved let alone funded and started.
Raising $330,000 for rocky mountain bighorn sheep enhancement in the last 4 years sounds pretty successful to me! Better than any other one animal auction or raffle in WA.
Just my thoughts not an official statement of WAFNAWS.

Right on Bryan

is this the same raffle i bought a ticket for at the counter when i bought my tags or a different one? ive never bought raffle tickets before but i was feeling lucky this year
-

No, they already ran that one so if you didn't hear from F&G you didn't draw.
-

You don't get a sorry/to bad?? :chuckle:
-
-
I understand the decision process or as much as anyone can. What I would like to know is what position if any WAFNAWS took on closing Swakane. Most all of us have our favorite animals and organizations, no one is better or wrose than the other. The Bighorn Sheep raffle is the best tag in the state, it should generate the most revenue that is a given. Does it generate more or less by being run by WAFNAWS than the state is simply a question.
-

I thought they ran the raffle draw in August? Sure hope so since I didn't get the phone call!
-
it was a joke coues ;)
-
Good thing! I'd like to have hope at least through the bulk of the summer to get my money's worth. :chuckle:
-
Kinda why I bought one of these tickets, that and to help the sheep of course.
-
As Bryan stated, WAFNAWS does not set management policy for the DFW. However, we do work closely with them and communicate our positions. While I believe they do indeed listen to us, it would be naive to think we have great influence over the Dept. We consider our relationship a “partnership”, both sides doing what they can to benefit bighorn sheep. And I believe we have a very good relationship with the WDFW.
Regarding the Swakane situation- Actually the herd still met minimum population and composition requirements (a formula established by wdfw) to allow for a special permit hunting opportunity. So, the Bio did not suggest closing it based on biological data. His recommendations are scientific, biologically based. The decision to close it this year came from Olympia. We are all disappointed not to have this incredible opportunity this year, but the decision was cautious, conservative, and prudent in my personal opinion.
The WAFNAWS Board of Directors did not all agree on the decision to close it. We did, however, agree to an unofficial position of not opposing the recommendation based on all the considerations. That should untaint your opinion chukarchaser.
Oh, and one of the main considerations of WDFW for awarding the marketing assignment of auction/raffle permits is based on the ability of that Organization to generate the most revenue.
-
Thanks for an honest answer it will indeed move me in that direction. I do sense my questioning the process upset some people. Too bad, I just wanted answers so I can form educated opinions.
-
No problem Chuckar. You asked and we tried to awswer it for you. No blood no foul. :hello:

Ticket sales are a bit slower this year than normal. Check out this ram that was photographed during spring surveys!
-
killer ram.....
-
Good reminder. I still need to get some tickets...
-
Good Lord... when is the deadline?? What are that rams circs???
-
That ram is nice Ernie. However, I do not think you can hunt that ram with this raffle tag as I think that is a pesky little california bighorn. You get to hunt rams that are bigger than that down in the Blue Mountains and Hall Mtn... Getting a 185"+ ram with this raffle tag should be possible.
-
Point of clarification, the pic of the ram running away is a Rocky that is in one of the huntable units for the Rocky raffle.
-
Wow. Sorry Ramslam. I thought that was that huge cali ram. :bash: Who wants a pesky 185" ram anyways... ;)
-
No use getting any tickets as I went to the WAFNAWS web site and used paypal to get mine yesterday! I could use another rocky sheep! ;)
Bryan
-
Monday, August 3rd is the deadline for buying tickets.
Buy online at www.wafnaws.com
-
I hate to help the competition but way better odds here of drawing a sheep tag than with the state. Also, you get a big ram if you draw this tag... It can only help the sheep so buy some tags as I won't draw anyways knowing my luck...
-
Two days left! Unless some people go crazy buying tickets this will be our lowest sales year ever which means the best odds for those of you supporting the raffle.
-
Sorry everyone I just bought the winning ticket :)
-
Got mine
-
Last call!
-
Well, I had to go for a chance, :P
Talked to a guy this weekend who is leaving in a couple of weeks for a dall sheep hunt in Alaska, he's going on $60 of raffle tickets from a SCI show. someone has to win :hello:
-
Did I win yet!!! :)
-
NOPE you can't be that lucky. THIS is washington. :bash:
-
Where is the winner from?
-
The entry deadline was Aug 3 so we should know soon, maybe ramslam can tell us more?
-
The lucky winner is Mr. George Pidgeon. He has never hunted bighorn sheep and upon hearing of his luck said he is, "speechless!"
Thank you everyone for your support. Gross sales totaled $61,500 for Rocky Mtn Bighorn sheep projects in Washington.
-
Hmmmm sounds like a bird hunter........................... :chuckle:
-
what state?
-
more like bird crap.........
Just kidding. Congrats to him, I am certainly jealous. It was money to a good cause, but I'd sure like to win one of these good causes some day.
-
Bummer. Oh well, always next year. Congrats to George.
