How do you tell? is this one a shooter?

Hard angle to tell but he definetly doesnt have that "mass" He is a younger ram for sure
-
So many variables but the short answer is no.
-
No not if I had a tag!
-
He doesn't look very massive. So probably not a shooter, just depends what you think is a shooter and what you would be happy with. :twocents:
-
I would put a round in him from a distance then walk up and check. There's a reason you don't notch your tag until after the kill. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
Okay being serious: if it were the last day of the season I would take him, but definitely not a shooter to me for a once in a lifetime hunt.
-
There are allot of things to think about here.
1. What unit are you hunting in for instance in the rimrock area this is a good ram
2. What day of the hunt are you on
3. What standards did you set for yourself
with all that said I would not shoot this ram. I would age him around 5-6.
he is Pretty thin at the bases and looks to be 5 to 7/8 curl.
I'm thinking with this photo he is around a 165 ram.
I am sure it would be hard but we should let this one grow.
-
165?
-
140 ;)
-
Sorry guys, it's a trophy in my book.
I would take it and mount it on my wall.
I guess i just don"t have high expectations, O well.
-
Bigger one on the other side of the hill!!
-
;)
-
165??? I'm think maybe mid 140's at best! :dunno:
-
Bigger one on the other side of the hill!!
There is always a bigger one on the other side of the hill.
With my luck i would be mounting my tag :chuckle:
-
if you see a 165 ram in washington unless youre on a rocky mountain hunt its probably time to start shooting that being said this ram doesnt have the mass to push him into that range and hes probably more like 145-150 and thats being generous and hes probably only about 4 years old doesnt even look like hes broomed off his lamb tips

this guy probably isnt a shooter either
-
Shooter in the Quilomene, pass in Swakane (if it was open).
-
140 not a shooter in any unit in washington
-
I"m going 120-130. You guys are generous. See how thin it is? I'm assuming it's a cali ram.
-
I really think this ram is around 5-6 but without being there and getting a great look at
some age rings we wont know. And I also think hes is pushing that 160 -165 class.
If you look at him good I would give him these numbers. Now this is field scoring.
Length 30 twice
base 14 twice
cir#2 12 twice
cir#3 8 twice
cir#4 4 twice
Now with this being said you are looking at a ram scoring 164 give or take an inch.
and I am usualy modest.
-
some of us might not shoot the ram we have been talking about.
But I dint think any of us would of passed this twister up what
a ram!!!

I dont think he'll have 14" at the base I wont argue with ya on the 30" length too hard to get a good length from that angle but after runnin some numbers i think we probably were too generous to begin with because id say hes probably got about 10" bases, pope probably hit the nail on the head with his guess
-
Your mass measurements are high. No way that is a 164 ram unless the picture is deceiving.
-
Hey you put the spotting scope on him!
Ok now I will agree with you on the mass butt not 10 inch bases there all day 13.
and after all this I am a bone head I added my bases twice but I not to proud to
say it. All in all I would not fill my tag on this ram. I bow down and say 134 is what
I would score this ram give or take an inch.
-
LOL. I'm with you on the size there... I did zoom in a bit...
His mass is not good. In fact, this ram could never be a "gagger" as I like to call them. Even if he grew all that horn out he will never be huge. Not to say he can' be a nice 160 some day... He better live 4 or 5 more years for that though...
-
Pass :dunno:
-
The main problem I have is basic firearm safety as in where is the bullet going to end up? no solid backdrop. What is on the other side of hill? When in doubt DONT SHOOT! but as far as question, is it the last day? how many others have you seen? what is average for unit? Is it a guided hunt or DIY? Is it a once in a lifetime tag, or OTC? A trophy is in the eye of the one harvesting the animal. I hunt with Trad Archery gear and if I could get close enough I would be very happy with that ram.

I agree with you he just dosnt have what it will take to become a big ram.
Are you buying any raffle tickets this year?
-
I haven't yet but I will buy a few...

Sorry then your modest score is off this time! I have a friend that had the tag and I scouted and did some research the year he had it and yes i was being very generous as Pope said his ram was 157 and would make this one look like a baby!
-
Not a shooter in my book...... He's a baby.
-
Based on your measurements Joebear, that ram would score 136. I think you are pretty close on the overall score but a little heave at the base; a little light at the tips. I say let him grow another couple years.

I am with you look at reply #23

Yeah ramslam I think this ram needs a few more years a good growing weather to
make it to trophy status
