Title: 22-250 AR?
Post by: timberghost72 on March 10, 2023, 05:33:07 PM
I have a new in box Aero AR-10 lower that I've been holding on to for a few years for a build. The larger caliber AR's don't interest me too much so I'm thinking of the 22-250 platform. I recently learned about this option and wondering if anybody by chance has a 22-250 on the AR platform?

With the impending legislation, I need to make a decision on either building it now and buying the parts and pieces or selling my lower receiver.

If I do decide to build this, has anybody purchased uppers or any other parts from Bear Creek Arsenal? Their prices seem decent.

Edit: Since time is short to make a decision, thoughts about the other calibers?

.243 - I do not own any rifles in this caliber
6.5 Creedmoor - I have 2 bolt guns already
.308 - I do not own any rifles in this caliber.

Between family and myself, I'm probably 10 complete uppers from BCA.

8 were trouble free out of the box.

One (7.62 x 39) was fixed with a slightly heavier buffer.

One had horrible machining marks in the breach, resulting in jams and mangled brass.   Sent it back with a piece of brass and they replaced the entire upper Pronto.

All 10 are very accurate.

I will continue to buy from them.

I have 3 complete Guns from them and haven't had any issues with any of them.  Probably have 1000 rounds through those guns now.

6 creed is also a new choice and 7mm-08.

I know a few guys on forums have been playing with 22-250 in ar rifles for years it’s been a hard one to get right.

There are threads all over the net about issues with 22-250 in an AR10 platform.  I've seen them most recently on trapperman.com and predatormasters.com.   Something about the cartridge is problematic and doesn't feed well in an AR10

Go with the 243.  AR10's are designed around the 243's parent case, the 308.  A 243 will do anything the 22-250 will do on coyotes and be a lot more versatile for bigger stuff in this state.  Both the 243 and 22-250  are equally known for BangFlopping coyotes.

Agree with most that 22-250 just doesn’t work that great in AR10’s (FAL, HK too) it’s something about the case geometry. I would do .243 or .260.

I would also suggest an Aero upper rec’r. The takedown pin datum vs the mating surface between upper and lower is what can make a rifle sloppy or tight and having them from the same manufacturer helps a ton.

Have you thought about .338 federal or .358 Win?

With a 16” barrel?

I would pay attention to Carp's advice on the 6 creed. :twocents:

Thanks for all the great ideas and thoughts here. It sounds like the 22-250 is not a good option. I'm glad I asked. One constraint I do have if I build this is my budget as I have already spent way too much money this year LOL. A 6 Creed would be pretty cool but that's above my budget. Leaning toward the .243.

Nothing about a .243 is a compromise. Extremely capable and available.

You've already got 2 6.5 Creedmoor bolt guns.

There's something to be said for limiting the number if calibers you have to stock for.

I'm sure someone will disagree, but I'm gonna say a 243 and a 6.5C are functionally pretty interchangeable.

6 creed

6mm CM would be my choice as well.  Also, I highly recommend using a good quality and easily adjustable gas block, it'll make dialing in your setup soooo much easier.

My Seekins SP10 started life as a 308 but before I ever put a single round through it I swapped it over to 6.5 Creed but to do all over again I'd put a 6mm Creedmoor barrel on it instead.

I was so close to getting that BCA 22-250 upper but they only have it in a 1:14 twist. That kinda limits bullet selection. I have a few uppers from BCA and only had a problem with one but their warranty and customer service were awesome.

I personally would go 243 ,just for dual purpose of big game.
6.5
243
22-250
Would be cool .
I don't have any of those .
Makes me want an upper in one of those.
I'm running bear crk 308 18 in upper on my aero lower.
Seems to work fine.

I used to have an AR-15 in 22-250.  It ran great, and the only reason I no longer own it, is because an additional magazine was unavailable and VERY expensive.  They were a machined billet mag.  Wish I still had it, as it was a fine shooting rifle.  I tried an AR-10 in 22-250, but it was big for a walking/calling rifle, so I sold the upper and put one together in 6.5 CM.

Olympic Arms made the 22-250 AR-15 back then.  They also used to make supremely accurate barrels.

I'm going through the same thing, been sitting on an Aero AR10 lower for a year, decided to get components now due to the laws in WA state going whacko and availability of Aero being a potential issue...that's because I wanted an Aero upper to go with it as well, and mate up solid.  I too have a bolt 6.5 but want to do other calibers and was looking at 22-250 but read similar stuff.  I don't have a .308 but settled on that for now due to it being a solid go too, ammo is easy to come by for it and cheap, and I have a 6.5 for longer range.  I do want a .243 as well since I don't have that, but was leaning 6 creed or 6.5 grendel?? that would be for an AR15 lower though, from Aero as well, so just ordered a plain upper for that as well, that I'll build at a later date and decide what to do.  I got my uppers for a pretty good price on a good sale at Primary Arms, way cheaper than aero site, could just get the upper for now and components later when you settle on what you want, that's what I'm doing anyways, so they mate up good, will go with other companies components for the other stuff.  Glad this thread popped up, just what I needed to read!
