Spring is breaking and the birds are ready for turkey season, here’s some Toms on one of the properties we hunt, can’t wait!
-
Looks like there line up biggest to smallest.
Freaking biggin on the end.
Look In good. 👍

It's going to be here before we know it! Wishing everyone a great season! 🦃
-
Lots of Tom’s and hens this morning
-
Wow, nice!
-
Have a GREAT and safe spring season!!
-
Looking good thanks for posting
-
A lot of birds are still eating around the cattle but some birds are breaking off from the big flocks and moving around, the recent warm weather has really encouraged more movement.
-
Some of the smaller groups spotted this morning
-
Thanks for the comments everyone!
I'm undecided how the overall population compares to recent years, the hatch was definitely negatively impacted last summer by rains, and winter was fairly harsh, and as usual there were some variations with where flocks wintered over. There seems to be a fair number of birds and as we scout more I'll get a better feel for the overall population.

Thanks, I wished I was out hunting.
I'm actually still at my home in Idaho taking care of the boring part of business, my wife Tara and guides Daniel, Zach, and Ray are taking care of everyone. I'm told there was action for everyone this morning but no dead birds yet, sometimes you just have to work through a few bugs, but it will come. Right now they are having lunch and will take a little break from the snowy weather this morning.
-
Youth hunt and first day snow gobbler success for Trey, thanks Jeff and Trey, it’s always a pleasure having you guys for a hunt.
-
Congrats guys
-
This is Isaiah with his bird taken on the youth hunt.
-
This morning general turkey season opened, Bob from Montana was the first to gether up two birds. His son Chris is posing with one of Bob's birds.
-
This is Todd from Alabama with both birds taken this morning with guide Ray. Todd is on a quest to take a bird in each state!
-
Two other hunters missed three birds and we had 15 or 20 jakes passed. Overall there's not as many birds as last year, but its still great hunting. Todd from Alabama said we have an amazing number of birds!
Guys are headed back out for the evening hunt. :hunter:
-
A photo of the 4 birds already taken all together
-
Awesome and the weather looks great
Thanks for posting Dale
-
:yeah: I always figure if it’s not raining it’s a good day.
-
Mike sacked up a bird this afternoon with guide Daniel, way to go Mike!

Thanks Dale, always a pleasure to spend the weekend with you guys.
-
Only three guys still hunting. One bird missed this morning and Chris from Montana hammered a nice tom this morning, good job Chris! Turkey season is so much fun!
-
It's so great to see all the fun being had, and a bagged bird or two just being the icing on the cake. Thanks for sharing the pictures!
-
Thanks, turkey season is so much fun, I just love hearing the birds gobble on the roost in the early am.

Bearpaw officially launched our newly available Montana Turkey Hunts last week. Our first hunter is Wallace Tutt from Alabama, he on his quest for the 49 State Slam. He called wanting to hunt Washington but we were full for the opener and I suggested trying our Montana hunt, which he did with guide Derek.
Wallace was amazed at how many turkeys he saw and this morning he closed another chapter in his 49 state quest with two nice Montana toms! Congrats Wallace!
-
Quest for 49 states, that is cool!
-
Quest for 49 states, that is cool!
It's becoming a very popular goal for turkey hunters across the country, probably about 25% of our hunters are pursuing the 49 State Slam.
-
Chris nailed his 2nd bird yesterday afternoon with Zach, great job!
-
Mike and John both nailed their 2nd birds with Daniel yesterday evening! 100% shooting so far, and second tags getting filled too. These guys all hunt with us every year, they are a blast, a fantastic time is had by all.
-
Congrats
Nice looking birds thank you for posting
-
This morning Mike and Less started hunting, they come every year too. Daniel had Mike on a hunt and he was scouting another good spot. Mike hammered a tom but hit a little low, and took off most of the beard. There were other birds in the area so he sat tight, a magpie swooped down and picked off a few feathers, then a stray dog came by and licked it, meanwhile none of the other birds came within range, that bird took a beating though.
Meanwhile Daniel was sitting watching another nearby spot scouting and birds showed up all around him, when the birds left he picked up Mike for lunch.
-
Nice!!
-
Good for Mike
He is probably the kindest, most decent man I have ever met.

Mike nailed his second bird in the afternoon and was done on his first day of hunting.
-
Very cool thanks for keeping us updated
-
The next day was Les’ day, he got one in the morning and one in the afternoon and they were done hunting. We always have such great times visiting with Mike & Les, hate to see them leave!
-
Congrats to them on nice birds
-
Very nice!
-
Thought this was a cool photo of Tom’s competing…
-
Nate from Alaska nailed a couple nice birds, congrats!
-
Nate's brother-in-law Jacob, also from Alaska, was not outdone, and nailed two nice birds for himself with guide Daniel. These guys were awesome dudes, thanks so much for hunting with us.
(I'm missing one photo)
-
Dave and Eric arrived last night and started hunting this morning. A nice tom came in early which Dave hammered and a couple hours later he smacked another beauty, great shooting Dave, "I love it when a plan comes together".
Meanwhile Eric has only seen hens this morning but that can change at any time! I told him to hang in there, but I know it's tough when your father-in-law is hammering birds left and right (literally) and all you are seeing is hens, but it will come!
-
The Moral Of The Story!
Yesterday Zach and his hunter had a tom come in to about 30 yards, boom, tom down, but they sat tight and quiet so the hens would move away on their own without being spooked so bad as running at them. There is nothing in this world that freaks birds out as much as a hunter running out to pick up a flopping bird.
The hunter watched the downed bird while Zach was watching the hens move away, suddenly the bird was on it's feet again, better hit him again, whammo, bird down second time, but hens are still not far away, so waiting continues and suddenly that tom is on his feet again, whammo, tom down third time, the hens are still within sight, but the third hit surely should has put him away for good. Better reload just in case!
Suddenly, tom is back on his feet again, whammo, tom down a 4th time, and by now the hens are out of sight so the hunters get up and go to get their prize, but what happens, tom jumps back up and is getting away, so whammo, tom down a 5th time, and Zach is able to retrieve the tom this time.
Back at the skinning area bb's are falling out as Zach skins and cleans the bird, amazingly most of the meat is salvageable. Finally after seeing some of the shot and then checking remaining cartridges it's figured out that the wrong cartridges were brought for the hunt, the moral of the story: "Don't accidentally take duck loads turkey hunting!"
The steel shot was not penetrating enough to kill the turkey, most of the shot fell out during skinning, however, that bird might have won a "heaviest bird" contest, LOL!
I give the same hunter a box of #6 turkey loads and the same hunter mowed over another tom this morning with one shot from the same gun!
-
That’s crazy 😂

Steel loads through an X full can get dicey too I would imagine!!

Sweet! Congrats to Tom and as always, to the Bearpaw guide who made this possible.

Looks like some great hunts and birds
-
Charles from Virginia and Chess from North Carolina with their first morning of the hunt birds taken with guide Zach, way to go guys!
-
Daniel had Lewis and Jeff both from Virginia hunting with him, not to be outdone by Zach they both shot birds on the first day too!
-
In the late afternoon Chess sacked up his 2nd bird , so he was done on the first day.
-
Nice birds!!
-
Thanks Fred, hope you are getting some action on your baits. We still have only one bear hitting our baits but these warm days should bring more bear out. The guys saw a a different bear the other day laying on top of the snow sunning himself! About two feet of snow! LOL
-
Peter from Massachusetts killed birds with us last year and returned this year, he put the hammer down at two different locations this morning, he's mounting the bird on the left, congrats Péter!
-

Getting my second bait out tonight. Nothing on the first one, but it is in a brand new place on private property. Not sure how many bears are there, but not many on this property. May take a while before they find it. Good luck, can't wait to see some bears being harvested by your hunters!!

Fred, we have bear on several baits now, the warm weather the last few days really got them moving, I bet you get some showing up soon.

I’m often asked why I don’t offer hunts in western Washington, the truth is that I have done a few hunts in western Washington in the past, but it was rainy on most of the hunts and I just don’t enjoy hunting in the rain near as much, I like snowy weather but don’t like rain, so I quit offering western Washington hunts more than two decades ago, LOL.
I really enjoy hunting southern Idaho, Utah, and eastern Montana due to the dry climates. I don’t even mind snowmobiling in 20 below temps looking for cat tracks in the winter, but rain, that’s just not attractive! Yeah I know I’m a wet wimp, several friends even make fun of how I dislike rainy weather!
At any rate back to turkey season!
Last night a new group of hunters arrived, a great family, they hunted with us last year, two fathers, a son and daughter that married to bring them all together, and another son and wife with their 6 month baby. This morning five of them were up to go hunting, mom slept in with the baby.
It rained all night and still raining good this morning, but my hunter and I were in place well before turkey wake-up time. After about 30 minutes the birds started waking up, there was a lot of talking on the roost, the hens were getting excited and so was my hunter, nothing like a morning with noisy birds. Finally they came off the roost, I saw several fly down, I could here them working their way closer but there was a little rise so we could see over that rise to see the birds, finally I decided they had to be close enough, I whispered that I was going to half stand to get a peek, sure enough two Tom’s are strutting next to each other about 28 yards away, I told Tristen to slowly half stand and shoot when he had a clear shot, he rose slowly with me rising again right behind him, at first the birds were lined up but then they split a little, I was afraid we would kill one and wound the other, I whispered for him to wait till they split apart further, which they did and he dropped one, the other birds started running away, we couldn’t shoot at the other tom for fear of hitting hens too, then they got out of range. I whispered to slowly sit back down.
The birds had not seen us and pretty soon the other tom started coming back, we waited until he was close enough and I whispered for Tristen to stand again and shoot when he could see the tom, Tristen did it perfectly and the second tom bit the dirt.
We rounded up birds and gear as the rain kicked into over drive, we didn’t get very good photos of dead wet birds, but we sure had a fun hunt! I love it when a plan comes together, Congrats Tristen!
Meanwhile Tristen’s wife Emily got a bird with guide Zach, and one of the other family members missed a bird with guide Daniel and then got another bird with Daniel. So it’s already a four bird day on the first morning!
I told Tristen the only bad thing about being done early is now he has to babysit, I went and got mom, and she’s out hunting now!
Tristen’s birds here:

Nice!!!

A photo of all 4 birds taken this morning. It’s been slow hunting so far this afternoon.

Ernie from Ohio arrowed this Merriam’s for his one year archery world slam, he flew to Texas the next day and got his Rio which completed his one year archery world slam.
-
We are finally bear hunting, first hunt, first day, first bear of our spring season, 6’9” big black boar bayed up by the dogs. One very happy hunter from Bozeman, Montana!
“Chewy” the Jack Russell even got in on the action, and one of the young hounds that is just getting started proved himself this morning!
Congrats to Josh for a dandy bear!
-
Love all the smiles!
Congrats on your success this season.
-
Nice!! Here come the bears!!!!!

Second bear taken was a color phase nailed by Francesco with guide Grant.

Three bear passed this morning, hoping for a kill tonight.
-
Blake Boothe from Alabama just completed hissingle season slam this morning in Washington State with Bearpaw Outfitters, congrats!
-
James from Alabama hunted another state last year, he was put in a stand before daylight and picked up after dark each day for 5 days, he never saw a bear. On the first day of James Idaho hunt two bear were passed in the morning, after lunch and a leisurely mid-day break, James nailed this young boar in the evening of the first day hunting with guide Gilbert, we’ll done gentlemen!
-
The other two hunters in camp have both passed bear too, on the third day of his hunt John from Georgia drilled this 6 1/2 foot blackie with Brian this morning. Great job guys!
-
Dave from Pennsylvania got two Washington birds for his slam about an hour apart this evening with guide Zach on the last day of his hunt. Dave had passed birds a couple times because he wanted close for sure shots, it was important to him that he didn’t wound any birds, I really respect and appreciate that! Great job Dave!
-
James from Pennsylvania passed bear and held out for this color phase Bear which he got on the fourth morning with guide Grant.
-
This is such a great thread, I love seeing all the successes and smiles! Thanks for sharing

Do you keep a running camp count on turkeys? It looks like you had a good season.

Do you keep a running camp count on turkeys? It looks like you had a good season.
Yes, my wife keeps track of the total number and where every bird was killed, also how many misses. Two years ago was our most birds taken, this year will probably be about our 6th to 8th place for total birds, part of that is due to quite a few of the hunters only wanting one bird. This year we did have had the highest percentage of adult birds ever. The hunters were very selective, only three jakes were taken.

Three Jakes, nice job leaving some for next year. Conservation at its best right there.

We are happy about getting nearly all mature birds but it’s really a reflection of the hunters we’ve had this year, the majority held out for mature birds. If a hunter sees a jake and wants to shoot it we usually let them. But we do have a couple properties where part of the arrangement is to only hunt mature birds. After hunting those properties that way I can say we’ve proven to ourselves it really does work best to only shoot mature birds.
-
Ben from Arkansas is trying to finish his one season slam, he just arrived this afternoon in time for dinner and only had 1 1/2 days to hunt, so Zach took him out right after dinner where he pre scouted some birds this morning. It worked out great, within 30 minutes Ben completed his slam with a 20 yard shot, very well done guys!

That's a healthy looking one that would certainly put a smile on someone's face.

:yeah:
He came in during daylight, so odds are good we get him unless he goes nocturnal, the nocturnal ones are more of a challenge!
-
The guides had another day off, Zach already filled a tag so Daniel was the designated shooter this morning, this has got to be the worst fan I’ve ever seen on a bird, it appears maybe at some point a predator must have almost had a meal but pulled most of the tail feathers and they are just starting to grow back. One of a kind bird and being drenching wet didn’t help the appearance any either.
-
Shane from Texas with a nice Idaho color phase 6’ boar taken with guide Brian on the first morning of his hunt. Not the bigger one in the previous photo but a good one. Way to go guys.
-
We had a better than average bear missed this morning, guides are going to shoot the gun again just to make sure the sighting is still right. Had to pass another bear because the guys are pretty sure it’s a sow that has cubs, even though cubs weren’t with the bear it wasn’t worth the risk that it’s the same bear.
We have another big black bear located that the guides will be focusing on hunting, hopefully he goes home with one of our hunters this spring. We still haven’t gotten that last big color phase bear either yet.
I still have a couple June dates available if anyone would like to go on a good bear hunt?
-
Another long beard taken on our Montana Merriam’s Turkey Hunt, good job Derek! We are now booking for fall 2023 turkey hunts and spring 2024 turkey hunts in Washington and Montana.
-
Ooohhhh, I think I ate too much! A good one stretching out after a big meal!
-
Larry from Washington nailed his Idaho bear this morning with guide Grant, good job boys!
-
Chad from Texas nailed this Idaho color phase yesterday with guide Gilbert. We have a couple cancelled bear hunts available in June at a $500 discount.
-
Another nice chocolate bear that showed up this week, hopefully he goes home with one of the hunters this season.

We are hunting pretty high, we still had snow a couple weeks ago, we don’t usually see any rubbing until the end of June and then a lot of them are still ok.

You and me both 8) :chuckle:

Jeff from Iowa wasn’t waiting either, he drilled this 6’-4” color phase with guide Grant on the first morning of his hunt this morning. That’s two over 6 foot the first morning of this hunt. Fantastic bears guys! One more hunter to fill out and the guys are done hunting this week. Maybe they can catch that white truck sneaking into our bait or someone else’s bait, we are watching for that truck, we will find it somewhere, sometime, it’s just a matter of time! I'm referring to the truck in this topic: https://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,279338.0.html
We still have hunts available for 2024 for anyone wondering.

You guys are knocking down some good bears this spring!
-
Man, sounds like a heck of a week you're having!
-
Thanks guys, we think some bear died in hibernation, but the guides have busted their tails with preparation and hunting some new areas and it has made up the difference, it has been very good hunting.

Starvation!
There was a poor huckleberry crop, bear didn't put on as much fat, and a longer than normal winter. We were worried about it last fall when we saw very few hucklberries, seen it happen a few times over the years. There's some sort of natural culling for every specie.
-
Craig from Florida filled his tag on the second day of his hunt with guide Grant. Photos of Craig’s hunt, the photo off the live bear is by trail cam before the shot by Craig.

Two other hunters in camp, one killed yesterday but I don't have photos yet, they had passed bear and then the other hunter missed a bear last night, hoping she gets her bear today!
