Bagged this tom last Thursday. Called it into 13 steps. It came in behind me and slightly to my left. I was under a tree and against a stump during the set. I stood up to leave the set and we both spotted each other at the same time. I was able to judge it was a mature cat and casually grabbed my .223, done deal. Piled right up.
My first cougar. I was amazed at how extremely sharp the claws were and also how it came in so quiet in such a brushy, nasty area. I had thought I had heard something earlier in the set but never saw anything.
I am guessing its 5-7 years old, 135-150 lbs (could be wrong). 7'6" from nose to tail, missing some teeth on its lower jaw. Had some as sweet and sour with rice last night, tastes like pork, but needs tenderized. I took all the meat. Getting a full mount. Very cool experience and I am looking forward to doing this again.
Ive got video of the cat (dead) on my instagram @bozeandbears

Warden was guessing 6-7. I'll be real curious to find out. Such an amazing creature. And the area I was hunting is really over run with them...at least according to my trail cam....

Nice Cat! Way to go!

Good job, nice looking cat. Couger is the other white meat, but you do need to tenderize it. A lady friend harvest one about every other year. She serves it with a Frangelico cream sauce like this.
Frangelico cream sauce
1 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch
1- cup heavy cream
3 - tablespoons Frangelico liqueur
2- tablespoons granulated sugar
1/2- teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Whisk together the cornstarch and 1 teaspoon water in a smll bowl until the cornstarch is dissolved and the mixture is smooth
bring the cream, frangelico , and sugar to a boil in a small saucepan over medium - high heat ; stirring to dissolve the sugar..
remove from heat, whisk until the sauce thickens slightly, about 45 seconds.
cool in an ice- water bath to 40-45 degrees F.
add the vanilla and whisk gently to combine.
refrigerate in a tightly sealed plastic container until use

That's what i'm hinking too. Measure from the gum line to the ridge in the dentition of the canine in millimeters, then add one to get a pretty good estimate on age.

Very cool! Congrats!

Wow looks like a healthy cat, it's amazing how quiet they can come in and surprise you ,even when your alert and waiting. Congrats and thanks for sharing!

:chuckle: Congrats again man, getting it in before the new tag year. Had fun trying some call sets with the app this past season. Surprised this is your first cat with how much calling you've done!

first confirmed cougar anyway. I am sure ive called them prior, just didnt see them. Called in several bobs. Yes, glad I got it done for the 2022 season. Happy to have my 2023 tag in my pocket. Going to try to fill that one too.
-
Congrats! I keep wondering if the 223 is enough for them while I'm after yotes or bobcats. What bullet were you using?
-
Wow nice cat. Got my first one a couple of years ago while elk hunting the Colockum. A real adrenaline rush!

Nice cat!
It is CRAZY how quiet they can be. It always makes me wonder how many critters see me out and about that I have no idea are there.
A lot, I would guess.
-
Where abouts did you get it? They seen four cougers crossing the roads up in Darrington recently.
