Title: Wood stove options for wall tent
Post by: duckmen1 on April 04, 2023, 10:08:58 PM
Looking into options for wood stoves for a 10x12 wall tent with a 5 inch stove jack hole. I have used wood stoves in the past but in a larger 20 foot tent years ago. And I know they can get really heavy depending on what you get. I would like to keep it as light as possible but still get plenty of heat to keep the tent nice and hot. 100 to 200 lb stoves are just not portable for me anymore. What are some of your thoughts? Appreciate any feedback.

I was originally looking for a light stove also, but ended up ordering one from a guy in Oregon who builds them, and I'm guessing it will be close to 100 pounds. I'm picking it up Friday. I just decided that for me a stove that will burn all night is more important than a lighter stove.

There are some good options online at the Wall Tent Shop out of Idaho. And he's got some good information you can read on his website. I almost went with a Riley or a Kni-Co stove. You can see them here:

I would go with the guy in Oregon and get a square box stove.

A dog stove would be the best. But they are only making four dog model now.

I have three 10 x12 wall tents. I have two 3 dog models and a cylinder stove. If I could find another 3 dog, I wold get rid of the cylinder.

Lots of guys are happy with the cylinder stove but I don’t like them. I am in my tents five to six weeks every year.

Box stove easier to pack.
More surface to cook on.
Holds more wood

You can find a ton of info in the Wall Tents Tips and Tricks Thread.

I have a 4 dog stove and it will do the job in a 10x 12 or bigger we use it i our cook shack.

Also a wood stove fan will help with heating.

Joe is a great guy and makes a great stove. I had him ship me one to Texas. He will go out of his way

Appreciate some of the feedback. For sure want the stove to be a box stove, also had seen the stove fan and for sure will get one of those, like I said I have to think about being portable due to circumstances as I can’t be lifting those 100 to 140lb stoves. And also looking at burn rates for burn time and longevity of the stove and not going with a stove that will just burn out on me. So looking for an investment but trying to also keep the cost within reason. But also looking at the idea of having a stove a little larger in wood capacity to help with burn time and such as I can alway dampen it back to lower heat a bit to keep it burning longer. As I know a 10x12 isn’t considered a huge tent to heat but would rather go a bit bigger than being a little underpowered. Not looking to have a water tank or necessarily do any cooking. Just to add heat to tent and help dry clothing and such. A lot of variables for sure out there.

When referring to the guy in Oregon which outfit are we talking about? I know a few names have been listed.

The Oregon one is advertised on Craigslist. He's just south of Portland. But yeah, his stoves are going to be heavy.

I have a kni-co stove and it is plenty serviceable for a light weight stove.

This one from the Oregon guy has handles. You wil like that option because two people could carry it easy.

All my dog stoves have the handles. The cylinder stoves don’t.

Couple tips.

After six years I never take a damper. Can regulate heat by air intake adjustment.
A oil drip pan, metal is the best option for under the stove.

Don’t worry about protection behind stove. Most heat goes out top and sides. Even with my stove read hot it has never bothered the canvas.

Most tent fires are from the pipe lifting out of the top of the stove during wind. Wire the pipe down to the stove. Another use for handles.

Appreciate the info Ghosthunter. All good tips. The stove you pictured looks like a very well built stove. Really like the quality that it seems that he makes for his stoves. I will likely be in contact with him soon and talk more details on the stove. Thank you. And hopefully others looking at this post and the wall tent tips and tricks post find this info helpful too.

I have a steel 4-Dog that I purchased about 20 years ago, or so. Good stove. It has a baffle in the fire box just below the pipe exit hole. The baffle helps keep the heat and smoke from just shooting up the pipe. The website says they are still baffled. The legs come off for transport and it has the carry handles. I would definitely buy another, but I'll never need to.

Have one built exactly how you want it at a local fab shop for 1/2 the cost.

I built mine using 50. in material and 10 for door gasket. Octagon in shape 14x14 with a 12x12 door. will burn all night and will boil water faster than at home. i even make pancakes on it. I added a water heater to the side of it last summer for breakfast and to keep the air from being to dry.  :twocents:

I realize not everyone can or has the equipment thats why i say draw it up and go to a fab shop. they love building cool stuff like this.

Have you considered building a barrel stove? It’s by far the cheapest and easiest option. They sell a simple kit for them for like 50$. I used a barrel the next size down from 55 gallon (30 gallon maybe?) just because i didn't want to lug around a 55 gallon drum and also I figured a 55 gallon would get too hot for my 10x14 tent.
But the kit is super simple to install, all you need is a drill and a grinder with a few cutoff wheels. Your chimney stand, the legs and the door screw into place once you’ve cut the openings, then just buy some single wall 5” chimney pipe at the hardware store and you’re in business. I also threw a chunk of expanded metal and a few shovel fills of dirt in there to keep the bottom from burning out.
I bet it took me less than 30 minutes to put it all together. And after a few burns and getting familiar with the chimney dampener and the vent on the door you can dial them in pretty good. Once I get the tent heated up I can really crank it down to where it’s just on the verge of smoking inside the tent and it’ll hold a fire for 6 hours. Granted, it’s not much of a fire after 6 hours but a few sticks of kindlin gets it right back up and burning.

I built a barrel stove out of a 35 gallon drum in H.S. shop class. Flat top, peanut butter jar lids for air vent covers that screwed in to close. Used a wire welder.  My parents then used it to heat the small wall tent they lived in all winter in N. Idaho. The following spring, we moved them into a large,  double-wall tent, built a floor, and they lived in that for another 4.5 years. Different stove.

I have one of the first stoves from the guy in Oregon. Its nearly 20 years old now and in great shape. I give it a new layer of high heat paint every year.  If i where you i would just contact him. He will build you anything you want. Tell him you want a lighter smaller stove. See what he can come up with

After much thought to the stove I believe I have made my decision to go with the Four Dog stove company Lil Dog DX. It is portable enough at 38 pounds stove only and everyone that has them seems to like them. So I won’t be too worried about someone getting hurt moving it around camp. Also with a 20 inch length on the stove should work fine for most of the wood I have available. I will place the order soon and anxiously wait to receive. I did set up the new tent and really like it. Being a 10x12 this stove should work well. Also just received a stove fan in the mail to circulate the heat. And have all the wood for seasons stacked and stored nice and dry ready to go. I appreciate the info and tips everyone had to offer.

Excellent

I might suggest a metal drip pan from Walmart under the new stovefor those embers that sometimes fall out during loading. Cheap and easy insurance. I record all the places I have camped with the tent on mine.

I will be sure to get one of those. Great idea to protect the floor.
