Anyone pack a pistol just incase a cougar steps out since season runs thru April for them? Cant shoot with your turkey loads legally, but pistol is fair game! (provided your GMU is open and you have '23 tags for cougars (new season tags)

I carry a pistol anytime I’m in the woods. Season or not.

I always pack a revolver in the woods. Realistically would you have time to drop the shotgun and draw and then get off a accurate shot? I don't know if I could.
Honestly 3" #4's behind a full choke to a soft skin animal would result in a quick dirt nap

I pack for tweekers!!

Wouldn't you get less cripples with the scattergun? And you have about the same range.

My point was toward legal harvest of cougar end of season.. if anyone plans....just in case.. sure, carry in some form is a good thing and the shotgun is pretty devastating but illegal to shoot cougar and claim with smaller than buckshot which probably isnt a great thing in tight turkey choked shotguns

Remember, pistol hunting requires a 4" barrel. Self defense doesn't.

Yes, very few places I don’t carry and it’s not by choice. Always have a pistol on my chest or side when in the woods.

Not to pile on but, I carry everyday. Being in the woods is no different than being in the city for me.

Where I hunt turkeys that is the only thing you can kill.
I carry a handgun everyday of the last 40 years everywhere I go.
If you were to take a bad fall in the woods your long gun might be gone. A hand gun very likely would still be with you.
I have had two such falls in my 72 years. The hand gun was always there for protection or singling.

I always have a pistol, doesn’t matter what I’m doing.
