Odd request here, I'm looking for load recipes for 2 7/8 10ga loads. One of my hunting partners purchased a SXS 10 with 3 1/2 chambers, 30" choked F & F and wants to shoot 2 7/8 loads. When he was a kid he used to shoot & load 2 7/8 with AL7 and lead.
So far, I have cut down a P&W 3 1/2 die to make 2 7/8 loads. I have found some load data that use the old Remington SP10 wads (I have 1K) but the powder loads just say medium rate powder but no weight. Anybody have any old load manuals with this info?
Thanks

Oh my gosh. Just reading that set off the arthritis in my neck!

2 7/8" length?

I have both lead and steel loads from Ballistic Products. Prolly not good to shoot steel in older doubles . But lead loads are illegal for waterfowl. Which would you like?

@metlhead Short 10's 2 5/8 & 2 7/8 are common old school. He knows he can't shoot lead for migrating birds. What I'm looking for is a safe powder charge for nontoxic other than steel. His gun is marked and chambered 3 1/2 and choked Full & Full. So far, I've found 33gr of SR7625 that has been discontinued. The same post mentioned Universal, Unique, Herco and WSF as replacement but no charge data.

Hey I have a case of 10ga black cloud duck loads I believe 2shot unopened for sale, let your buddy know I will cut him a killer deal! 50% off of what they were brand new, got them as a gift from family member but I don’t have a 10ga

Basically it doesn't matter 10 ga, 12 ga, or even 16 ga. As example an ounce of shot needs X amount of powder for the X amount of velocity you want. Google should give all that info.

I have the loads for some of those powders, but they use card wads. SP10 wads are for 31/2 loads only in my books

Old stile SP10 wads are for both, just need to add a 16GA fiber wad in the SP10 wad. I have a load that uses 19gr of Red Dot or Promo and another with 22gr of 700X. Most all load data is using obsolete powder. I'm trying to make 2 7/8 loads with 1 1/4 or 1 3/8 oz of Bismuth. I don't want to call Ballistic Products unless I have to do so. Just too many bad issues with them, and now they said my ID was hacked in their system.

What velocity do you want is the key answer for the amount of shotgun powder your need? Length of the shotgun shell has nothing to do with it. Only reason for bigger shotgun shells is because there are a lot more pellets in steel versus lead to make an ounce load.

Found some recipes on the Hodgdon website. All use Longshot powder, SP10 wads 1 7/8 or 1 1/4 oz of Bismuth. I have two pounds of Longshot that I use to load 28, so I'm good to go.
