Can someone please explain to me what the benefits are, if any, of drawing a Multi Season deer and drawing a Quality deer in the same season.
-
The only benefits to me would be that you could apply for quality tags for rifle and archery. Also, if you eat your tag on your permit hunt you could still hunt the late archery and muzzleloader seasons.

Personally what I have done when I've drawn mult season deer, is to wait until after the special permit draw is done before I buy it. To me if I were to draw a quality deer permit I would focus only on that. I wouldn't want to be hunting multiple seasons.
So for me the benefit of drawing multi season deer is just having the option to buy it if not successful in drawing quality deer, or any other special permit that I'm going to want to spend most of time focusing on.

Driving point creep up with that mind set you don’t draw a quality tag you return it keep gaining points probably draw every year tell you get you quality tag on top of Multiseason it’s a good idea but…

I'm not really saying what I do. I was answering the question, which was what are the benefits of drawing a quality deer permit and the multi season deer tag in the same year. The answer, in my view, is there isn't a benefit. The multi season tag would be a waste of money in that case.
But as to specifically what I actually do myself, I have never, not once, purchased the multi season deer tag. This year I didn't apply for it. I decided that with two trips to Wyoming this year, and multiple people I hunt with such as my daughter and my brother, I just don't need the option to hunt all the seasons.
Not sure how it's going to go yet this year, but could be that my brother will have a muzzleloader deer tag, I may have archery, and my daughter will have modern. Therefore I can still hunt all three seasons, just I won't always be the one pulling the trigger.

Im pretty sure that there is no getting your points back if you dont buy the multi season deer tag. So it is having the opposite affect. Bobcat would yse his multi season deer points and not use the tag. Allowing someone else to buy it.
I am the same way. I drew multi deer this year and wont even think of buying it until after regular draws. If i draw a permit i wont buy multi, but my multi points are still gone.

Gotcha well all I was saying was people utilizing the multi to apply for more permits bow, archery, rifle and then not drawing and turning it back into the state for leftovers that your lucky to get while you keep gaining points and drawing every year is a problem lol I’m not specifying you but people do do that and they’ll keep drawing

You cant return the multi season tag once you purchase it.

I have never gotten my points back when ive drawn and not bought multiseason tags.

You definitely do not get your points back if you do not purchase an MS tag once drawn. You do not lose them if you purchase a leftover after the July 31st deadline. I've never heard of anyone returning an MS tag after the special draw period. Pretty sure you are locked in at that point just like you can't change your weapon choice if you put in for draws already. I can't see dfw refunding anyone on MS tags.

Correct. DFW loves their revenue like a fat kid loves ice cream

Out of all the guys I know who live around here this is the first time absolutely none of us have put in for multi-deer. From our point of view, its just totally not worth it. I havent had one for 2 previous years.

To me being able to hunt deer all fall and into the winter and put in for multiple weapon categories in the special draw is totally worth the little the tag costs. But I like to hunt a lot.
-
:yeah: September thru December. What could be better? Hunting groups have fractured, buddies are mostly gone so I'm hunting more archery. I find special permits are limited in archery, at least the areas I generally hunt. Also, my son hunts modern, the MS allows me to hunt with him. When I don't draw MS, I can always hunt bear.
My deer/elk choices are basically OIL at this point. MS tag might improve the draw odds by .01% and allows some choice of weapon for any tag.
-
I apply for the Multi tags every year. I love to hunt and at my age I never know if it will be my last season. So, I try to spend as many days in the field as I can.
-
One benefit of buying the multi-season tag before applying for quality draws is the ability to put in for a quality hunt area for multiple chances to draw...my example is if you really want an Entiat quality permit then you can put in for the modern firearm permit and the archery permit using your two options for the quality application for one unit...

That is what I was thinking, you get to put in for all 3 weapon choices, + 2nd deer choices for each weapon and in my case 65+ for each weapon.
Multi-season tag holders can apply for special hunts for all three weapon types. Elk Multi-season tag holders are eligible to apply for special hunts on both sides of Washington state.

So (just so I have this straight), I cannot buy a rifle elk tag and put in for a muzzleloader special draw, right? ...or vice-versa...
That's the way I have always understood it, but I was just thinking the other day "Why would it matter? If I buy a rifle elk tag, I have to turn my "regular" tag in in order to get the one I drew, right?" (I honestly don't know... :dunno: in 22 years of applying I have never drawn a quality tag.... :P)
-
You can only apply for the weapon choice of tag you chose. Unless you have the multi season. When you draw a special permit, you keep the tag you originally picked up, they only send you a letter (permit) allowing you to hunt the draw you were picked for.

Correct, if you all ready purchased a rifle elk tag and drew the multi elk you need to go into a store turn ing your elk tag and purchase and receive the multi tag. 22 years sis a long time you should put in for some easier tags to draw.

Fair criticism for the elk tag. I live in the Blues, so I've been trying to draw one of the tags here. I have tried putting in for every weapon at one point or another. At this point, I'll keep trying... I know the area and it's right out my back door.
Not a fair criticism for Quality Deer. I want a decent mule deer tag anywhere north central. The ones I put in for shouldn't be this hard to get. I just have %$#@ luck in the draws. I put in for the Blue Mountain Foothills Whitetail Tag in the buck category. I know a lot of guys that have drawn that tag 3 or 4 times since I've lived here. I drew it once... with 14 points. WDFW just really hates my Wild ID# I think....

I always buy my multi season permit before the draw because I put in for quality deer tags for archery. 2nd deer tags for rifle season and late buck tags.

You don’t need gohunt to calculate draw odds. When I put in for tags I look for draws with more like 10% or higher. People putting in for tags that are under 1% draw odds are crazy or just don’t like to hunt lol

When you calculate your own draw odds, are you taking the number of applicants in the hunting reg and dividing it by the number of tags?

Whether my odds are 10 percent, 1 percent, or .1 doesn't really matter. I have never planned a Washington season around a permit since I started applying in 2003. If a permit is drawn, then i will look at the schedule and see if im willing to alter my fall season to participate in the permit hunt. Multi is one of my favorite to draw for that reason.

I'm actually not sure how anyone without insider information can know the actual "odds" of drawing a particular hunt. There might be 100 people putting in for 10 tags, but how do you know how many points each person has? I may be one of 300 people putting in for 6 elk tags, but my name doesn't just go in the hat once, it goes in the hat 441 times... I have no idea how many points the other 300 dudes are squaring....
Does GOHUNT have that info? (I don't know, I'm not a member...) :dunno:

I'm actually not sure how anyone without insider information can know the actual "odds" of drawing a particular hunt. There might be 100 people putting in for 10 tags, but how do you know how many points each person has? I may be one of 300 people putting in for 6 elk tags, but my name doesn't just go in the hat once, it goes in the hat 441 times... I have no idea how many points the other 300 dudes are squaring....
Does GOHUNT have that info? (I don't know, I'm not a member...) :dunno:
yes it breaks down all of that for instance the huckleberry moose tag a guy with 3 pts drew
I guess that's what you're paying for then. So, can I put "my" points in and figure out my actually drawing odds with X amount of points?
They use the previous year's data for their odds so they are really just educated guesses. I use GoHunt for my research but know that what they present as draw percentages are more just to gauge what that particular tag took to draw in the past

So, if GOHUNT says that I have a .01% chance of drawing my elk tag, that is assuming that my name is only going "in the hat" once?

One benefit of buying the multi-season tag before applying for quality draws is the ability to put in for a quality hunt area for multiple chances to draw...my example is if you really want an Entiat quality permit then you can put in for the modern firearm permit and the archery permit using your two options for the quality application for one unit...

With a .01% chance 😂
Thankfully the tags odds aren’t that bad for most units or no body would bother any more.
Do you have GOHUNT?.. if not you should get it and see for yourself
You don’t need gohunt to calculate draw odds. When I put in for tags I look for draws with more like 10% or higher. People putting in for tags that are under 1% draw odds are crazy or just don’t like to hunt lol

No, you put in there how many points you have for that particular species, category etc so it calculates that as well. I use the draw trends feature probably more than anything. It helps me see the true point creep of the unit

So I just spoke to WDFW and got clarification on the MS tag. You still only get 4 choices, in my case deer, but they can be for any weapon, but still only 4 choices. BTW, I was told that if i'm not drawn for the tag I want I can return my MS deer tag and get a full refund AND my points back as long as it's at least 2 weeks before the start of the season.

Boy gotta love good ol' wdfw, I drew MS elk and deer last year and was told I could not turn the MS tag back in for a refund after purchasing. :chuckle: :bash:

You only get two choices on the Quality deer application. Multi-season tag doesn't change anything as far as number of choices you have. And, I would get a second opinion on turning the multi-season tag in for point restoration. Doesn't sound right to me.

Yes, quality deer is only 2 choices, BUT all other applications are 4 choices. I'm just telling you guys what I was told an hour ago, but yes after reading some of the other replies I agree on the second opinion. Although I don't intend on returning my tag regardless. My hunting buddy just had shoulder surgery and cant bow hunt this year so we are going back to MZ, while my son still wants to bow hunt, so I can do both now. We'll see where next year takes us.

:yeah:
Gohunt just for washington is likely not worth the dollars as the draw is too random to give truly accurate predictions for a given permit, unit, or year. However it can be valuable for wa trends, and saves tons of time (unfortunately) if applying in multiple states and areas within them.
I look at multi season as an opportunity to get more chances to hunt, but dont know many folks who truly get to use their multi and permit points in conjuction in a given year. I personally dont know anyone who has had that kind of luck, unless straight point dumping.

It can happen but the odds are probably crazy. I had it happen for elk in 2021 where I drew multi and then Quality elk. I had more points for Multi elk than I should have to draw and less than I should have for the Quality tag. Again I feel I had crazy luck that year. You may not know me personally but we have met when I bought a bow from you last year. :tung:

Awesome! I remember ya :hello:
I understand it can/does happen. And when it does its sweet!! Great bull as well on that tag!!!

I agree with you the chances of the stars aligning to draw both even with a lot of point is crazy slim.
