Post by: duckmen1 on April 15, 2023, 08:07:12 PM: 410 laying the hammer down. Last night scouted and put a gobber to roost. Got in way early and set up about 80 yards from them. They had 2 routes to go. Two gobblers chose to take the other way. So circled them and had one walk a game trail to 15 yards. Smoked it within the first hour of season. Then got onto 3 different gobblers mid morning. Kept working around on them and couldn't get into the position I wanted. So left them knowing they would stay there. Checked out more new country. Saw some different areas that had a lot of pressure so headed back to where I left the gobblers. Knowing right where I wanted to set up. Got into position. And within 20 minutes 2 gobblers going off. Within a couple hundred yards. One on each side of me. A few calls and it was game on. Watched a nice tom strut all the way to 28 yards. But had a slight technical difficulty with a branch grabbing the gun. Didn't want to spook the bird by moving so played the patience game. He walked over the edge. Cleared the obstruction. Hit the call 5 minutes later he popped up in tall grass at 23 yards. Rest is history. 2 nice toms opening day and tagged out ready to go home. First spring season for me. And all on public ground. Feel very blessed to have the success I did. These birds were harvested with #9 tss 3 inch hand loads. They worked great. CZ Drake over under. Improved cylinder choke and modified.

Heard these guys gobblin around 9 and got to within 80 yards…
They had a couple hens with them so they were struttin and spittin…

Called the whole group to within 30 yards before having a clean shot. Dumped the tom in his tracks and the group scattered. Hit them with a few yelps and eveyone settled down… Threw out a few more yelps and the jake gobbled back, turned around and started coming my way… 15 yards out and laid him down…

Now I’m the designated caller for my son…

They announced their presence with a gobble from ten yards behind us we about jumped out of our boots! They moved off about 20 yards behind some brush but a purr and a few yelps had them strutting and circling around into the open. Harper passed on a few marginal shots and the waiting paid off when this bird presented her with a good 25yard shot :tup:

Post by: pickardjw on May 02, 2023, 08:48:08 PM: First spring bird in my 5th year of trying. Changed strategy on where to hunt and it paid off. Birds were very quiet and we bumped a ton of hens with no toms around. Finally found some toms with vocal hens and was able to bring this guy in by pissing off his girlfriends. Had to hike him out about 4 miles to get to buddies with a camera so he's a little beat up.

I was waiting and waiting for my son to shoot and I finally got impatient as they were getting leary.. i shot then my son shot just after me...pretty special day.Thanks to my buddy for his expertise calling!

A addiction has now started :chuckle: I got experience mountain bird hunting and farm field hunting. So I got a taste of both hunting styles!

Jump to 3:20 if you want to skip all the waiting and watching the birds come in and mill around. Clipped the camera on my vest last second so my arm blocks a lot of the action. Just happy to have the footage at all, filming was not the main priority!

My wife also decided to mentor 4 other new women hunters this year on turkey hunts, which took up several weekends. At 10 years old she was cool calm and collected rolling this guy at 22 yards. This is her first harvest and I'm so proud of my ladies for getting it done this morning.

410 and tss is a deadly combo and very underated. A blast to carry in the woods. Congrats on your son filling the tag.

Yes .410 Stevens SS extra full choke 3" 9.5 TSS with a Truglos Red/Green dot scope. Been a great gun for last three years.
